:thumb: Thanks! One large pond up in Webster County I heard theDNR stocked with rainbow trout

So now I got to study up on live bait and lures they like. And no way am I going to try fly fishing for them. Just use my walleye rod and reel set ups

minnows, crappie jigs, and small plastic grubs on a jighead.....all on a bobber at the appropriate depth

How deep do rainbows travel? My best guess in more of a pond setting would be mid level rather than right off the bottom and probably close by to the current?

Oh, wait, woah, i thought you meant crappie!

For stocked rainbows in a pond, you fish power bait on the bottom with a slip sinker setup. Give about 2 or 3 feet between the sinker and the hook. Use a lighter leader between the swivel and hook....maybe 4 lb. Trout can be line shy (but stockers can be pretty dumb).

You might be able to get one with a berkley trout worm twitched along the bottom with the same setup, but I'd go with the power bait.

It's starting to get a bit hot for trout in a pond (unless it's spring fed), so they'll be in the deepest water.

If there is current, they'll probably be in the slack water right along side the current, waiting for food to drift in. If there is any kind of fountain or waterfall or something that makes bubbles and aerates the water, try there too (trout need highly oxygenated water).

Yeah I caught plenty of crappie over the years. Love Berkeley products. Most my rods are Berkeley lightning. Good plastic baits too. So the little nibblets in a jar like the ones for crappie they have that for trout? Rainbow go for any live bait?

Yeah, they'll be little bright colored marshmallow looking things, or they come in the same kind of jar as a kind formidable foam paste. The powerbait floats, so that's why you rig it with a slip sinker on the bottom and give it a few feet as leader so it comes up slightly off the bottom.

With stockers, by far the best bet is power bait or trout nibbles. The powerbait is cheating with it's engineered scent and taste, and the trout nibbles are just like the little pellets they feed them at the hatchery. They may go for nightcrawlers, but powerbait is probably better for stockers.

Use a smallish single hook (not a treble for trout!), maybe between size 6 and 10

There aren’t going to be any trout in that lake this time of year. IDNR stocks those for winter only and the fishermen take them.
I would be very surprised if there was carryover. That water will be way to warm.

Bows will die in water temps higher than 70, so in a small Midwestern pond, I'd look for them in the deepest water available, below the thermocline.

There's current? How is there current?

If there's current, the trout will be in or near it. If you're talking about an old creekbed scenario, they'll be in the creekbed, and will be patrolling/ambushing prey that approaches the sides of the creekbed.

If it's a creek/stream inflow, they'll be facing into that, probably near the bottom, though they might rise closer to the surface around 4am local for a few hours.

Rainbows have been caught as deep as 60+ feet in some reservoirs.

Nah, no fly fishing. It was an Alaskan cruise, so we just picked up a guide that took us out to troll for salmon (and if that wouldnt have worked then we would have moved to rockfish). The best part was we took the catch to a wilderness camp where the guide cooked the fish for us. While fishing we saw several humpback whales breaching. It was an awesome day.

Just watched "Beyond the Lens" on PBS and the show was about going to a remote camp in Alaska during the summer to fish for Silverside Salmon on Becharof Lake. The largest Salmon run in the World and one of the most remote, desolate places around. I'm not a fisherman but it was pretty cool.

Green River below Fontenelle Dam in WY. Was a down year, in spite of the great snowpack over the winter. Didn't help that it was crowded as hell. I may have to find a new river next year.

I spent the last week in New Mexico fishing the Rio Grande in the gorge just north of Taos.

I had never fished this river before, so I took a guide the first day and did it on my own for the next 3.

It was a beautiful, remote area and it was a hell of a hike - 700 feet down to the gorge bottom. The hike in wasn't so bad, but the hike out after a day of crawling over car sized boulders was a bit tough.

At the trailhead - can't even see the river here:
https://i.imgur.com/zh2Ha6q.jpg

The river is finally in sight:

A pretty brown:

A 19 incher, but he was so long and skinny! This guy would be a monster if he could put on some weight:
https://i.imgur.com/lGVYard.jpg

A beautiful, wild rainbow. Look at those pretty, sharp fins and nice pointy nose. This is so much better than those nasty stocked hatchery fish:
https://i.imgur.com/jZJoxe3.jpg

Catch of the weekend - a monster brown!
https://i.imgur.com/R2lDfMP.jpg

My guide wanted a picture of the fish too! He said it was the biggest fish any of his clients had taken all year. Of course, his photo turned out way better than mine:

Those hikes of those canyons are not fun.

Beautiful colors on that brown. Looks pretty thick as well. Guessing about 18-19 inches? Assuming both of you have close to normal sized hands/fingers.

What ware they biting on? Caddis?

I'd actually estimate it at around 21. The skinny one I have the picture of was an actual measured 19, and this one was significantly larger.

Most of the fish, including this, were caught on a size 18 micro may bead head drifted under a heavy poundmeister (a local pattern if a crane fly larvae).

Speaking of colors, I lost a very large cutthroat when it wrapped me around a rock. I saw it roll once a d it was such a beautiful red color...I'm really upset I lost that fish.

Pablo 10-06-2023 06:40 PM

That's an absolute beaut. I caught one almost the exact same profile on the White River years back, but not throwing flies, I'm not that good!

Right. I keep forgetting other people will fish flies other than dries, lol.

If you caught it in that pool behind you guys, then the double dropper makes a lot of sense. I'm assuming a decent flow rate and depth of more than 3-4 feet? Indicator or just high sticking/euro?

That river is mostly pocket water. It's strewn with boulders the size of a car and the water is generally quite fast. The rig has to be heeeavy to get down fast. The poundmeister was a. #8 with a tungsten head and lead wrapping. The lead fly was about 6 feet under the indicator. I couldn't euro there because the water was too deep to get close enough to the boulder and eddy. Some of those holes are definitely 15+ feet deep

There's not really traditional casting with a rig like that. It's more of a circular lob up and over

Gotcha.

When I fished a lot of indicators, I ended up doing almost exclusively roll casts instead of anything overhead. A lot less tangling, and way easier to aim.

Those were your own ties?

Wasn't an indicator fly, it was a double nymph rig. A #8 lead fly (poundmeister) with a #18 tungsten bead olive micro may. All that was drifted under an airlok indicator.

I couldn't even really roll cast it because the current pulled the heavy flies down. I'd have to make a first roll cast to get the flies up, then lob them over.

No, I don't have time to tie anymore! I get most of my flies now from big Y because they're affordable. I bought these flies from the local shop though because I like to support small business. I'll generally tie my own things that aren't stocked or tied well at big Y.

Yeah, with really heavy/long stuff I have to usually do a snake roll just to get the flies up, then a roll cast. Sometimes I have to aim about 6 feet above the water, if the rig is heavy/long enough.

i buy flies from Big Y too!

When i was in MT last summer we stopped in to this tiny little burg i don't remember the name of (Connor? Connell?) and they had a flyshop in a toolshed (maybe 18ft by 12ft?). The owner tied flies, and i bought a half dozen of these bullethead rubber-legged caddis just to support the shop, and coax him into giving me some decent info about the fishing. Dang things worked really well, but I forgot the name of the shop, so I can't order more, lol.

Well try it some time! It's a more delicate way to fish...the fish are smaller, more fragile, and more wary than other freshwater fish.

Fairly cool. I never actually check the water temp. I was fishing a slower pattern, more like early spring. A big bladed spinner fished very slow.

It's Autumn here in Iowa and the Smallies are on!
It's so nice just to go down to the river 3 blocks away with my fly rod and get action. Water levels are so low that it is easy to target where they are going to be holding. I love fishing for Trout but in my opinion Smallies fight much harder.
Each on of these fish went aerial.

Went out today on the west shore of Oahu. I caught 2 small mahis and a small yellowfin.

That’s living loochy!
Did you feast?
I have only gotten to go offshore deep sea fishing a couple times, but the real enjoyment was having a fish you caught nicely prepared and consumed.

It's so nice just to go down to the river 3 blocks away with my fly rod and get action. Water levels are so low that it is easy to target where they are going to be holding. I love fishing for Trout but in my opinion Smallies fight much harder.
Each on of these fish went aerial.
Always a good time.

Those are some serious fatties, and I share you enthusiasm for smaller waters where they're easier to locate :thumb:

Well the BAIT is that that deep
It's only a few feet under the surface, but the fish come up. They trolled it about 25 to 50 yards behind the boat

Gotta wait for Santa to bring it on Christmas, but if we can get a nice day in the winter i just might. My license is expired but that's an easy fix.

Yeah bruh, don't make them wait months to use it... even if nothings biting they're going to learn the ropes and get to use their new gift

I got a big enough yard that we can work on casting it and learning the ropes without a body of water but I'm excited to take her out and let her see some fish in real life.

She was scared of the 80lb blue cat in the tank at bass pro earlier

I need some God damn help.

Santa got my son a fishing pole for Christmas. My son has been asking for months to go fishing. Santa knows his father fished world class trout streams in Montana and has no earthly idea how to Urban fish in Phoenix. I don't know what to use and how to rig for catching stuff here, so please excuse my likely incorrect terminology use here.

We fished 4 hours this weekend without a bite, although I'll say those around us got nothing either. Used Power bait balls and power bait worms. Son used a bobber and I tried a Texas rig setup (?) using a jig head with a long powerbait worm as the body, letting it sink and giving it some action every so often.

He still seems very interested after spending 2 hours fishing each day without a bite. I don't want him to get discouraged though!

If he's enjoying it just tell him to stick with it and he'll get one soon enough, but until then just look at it as a good excuse for some quality time together

I know but I am afraid I also don't know how to do a proper setup or provide the right action. I've just been googling shit but I grew up fishing rivers/streams, never lakes or ponds. We never used weights or floats or any of that shit!

Sweet this thread pops up.

I was just casting out front trying out my new fire engine Silvercat Elite Light 7'6' rod and 4.9:1 gear ratio Salt Striker reel. casts beautifully

Got it from BPS in Kansas City I mean Santa delivered.
