But, I can't understand how a person can switch loyalty to teams. Its as foreign to me as thinking having a dick up my ass would be a good thing. One of the enjoyable parts of my relationship with my son is the ability to share the ups and downs of a sports team. He's a 5th generation Cardinal fan. It matters that I can tell him the story of his great grandfather meeting Stan the Man after a game. How I use to spend my summer nights listening to a radio broadcast of games. That has much more value that jumping to another team because they pissed you off. |

I lived between KC and Illinois for years (parents divorced)...cheered for Frank Thomas and the Sox as a 6-10 year old kid watching WGN replay the next morning when I knew the Big Hurt hit bombs... then Sosa happened back in '98 and I got to watch all of that when I was 13... so I've always cheered for local teams...I'm not a guy who HATES the Sox and LOVES the Cubs...I liked and cheered for both teams...and the Royals...and I'm sure now that I'm in Dallas I'll cheer for the Rangers now. My only real team that, at the end of the day, I gave a shit about is the shitty Chiefs. NFL is king...I am a baseball fan because that was my sport, but more or less I just appreciate good baseball. I love the NBA, I cheer for the Bulls but I watch maybe 10-15 games a year so it's hard to be a diehard...playoff basketball is king, though. |

and BRC, I'm glad you can bond with your 5th generation Cardinals fan son...that's great.
Unfortunately for me, my family has no centralized location, I have uncles in South Carolina, Michigan, New York...even Guam. I have no family in Texas, I had my mom and sister in Illinois, my dad in Kansas and my other sister in Missouri. My dad is a diehard Detroit fan...I grew up in KC. Why in the hell would I cheer for a market (Detroit) I could never see? My first sports memory (and a story my dad tells to this day) was when I was 5 and went nuts when DT sacked Elway causing a fumble and a Chiefs recovery... the Arrowhead experiences when I was a kid will have me hooked for life (unfortunately)...I wish I could have been a Bears fan...at least then I would have known what going to a Super Bowl feels like. |
