No one was seriously talking about Christian Ponder going high in the first round either. But the Vikings took a swing at him. The Chiefs could have had a chance at Dalton. They could have brought in Kaepernick in the 2nd round. They could have looked at Clausen or Steven McGee or Skelton or McCoy, who are at least interesting guys to develop on the bench. I'm a firm believer that to develop young QBs, you have to have a constant pipeline of players you can evaluate, even if that means giving up a few picks to do so.
If you're looking for a backup, why not go with a veteran with some experience? Like a McCown, a Rosenfels, Grossman, Orlovsky? They're all better options than Palko is your QB goes down.
The pickings were slim. But it's bad when you only bring in one 5th round pick (in the 3rd year) as your developmental guy, and don't even TRY to bring in a capable backup.
