Who really knows about the money. If you look at Rosenthals twitter the number changes with every tweet. Apparently there isn't an opt out clause in the contract and it's loaded with deferrals.

Samardzija had a few good months at the beginning of '14 and has been largely garbage otherwise.

One thing to remember is that Arrieta only has 2 years left of arbitration. So this deal gives the Cubs the #7 2015 NL pitcher for 2 years and his numbers come off the books when its time to lock up Arrieta.

Cards dodged a bullet on Samardzija.

Mike Leake would be perfect for the Cards. Hell Cueto might not be bad either.
