Tiger gets one back

O.city 07-21-2013 09:31 AM

Tiger isnt' hitting FW's with iron's, time to say **** it and start ripping driver and see what happens.

O.city 07-21-2013 09:34 AM

Tiger just needs to get out of his head so to speak. He's swinging well, just let it go.

kstater 07-21-2013 09:34 AM

Yikes

O.city 07-21-2013 09:35 AM

Come on Phil, can't be doing that.

ptlyon 07-21-2013 09:39 AM

Apparently not Phil

kstater 07-21-2013 09:41 AM

Scott must not have had the putter tied correctly around his waist.

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 09:45 AM

Very clutch putt by Phil. This looks to be the best chance he's ever had at the Open.

ROFL I hate those F'n things

kstater 07-21-2013 09:48 AM

HOLY SHIT

tk13 07-21-2013 09:49 AM

Tiger almost putting it in the hole from the fairway on 14. Westwood drops another.

kstater 07-21-2013 09:50 AM

I lol'd

Jason Sobel ‏@JasonSobelGC 8s
Old Tiger would've holed that one.

LoneWolf 07-21-2013 09:50 AM

Uh, oh. Tiger has that look like he's about to turn it on.

kstater 07-21-2013 09:51 AM

Not sure how you leave a putt to get to the clubhouse tie short on 18

kstater 07-21-2013 09:52 AM

Scott needs to find a different anchor spot. Maybe his chin?

kstater 07-21-2013 09:53 AM

You're still away Adam

tk13 07-21-2013 09:53 AM

And Mickelson in the lead. How about that.

mlyonsd 07-21-2013 09:53 AM

ha ha.

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 09:53 AM

Phil is going to win.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 07-21-2013 09:55 AM

Mick has been so solid all week. A two putt wins this tournament

Assuming he doesn't do anything stupid on 18.

Was gonna say, he still has 18. Probably try and hit a sand wedge 230 yards or something.

LoneWolf 07-21-2013 09:57 AM

Prediction: Phil makes birdie at 17, bogeys 18, and loses in a playoff to Woods.

kstater 07-21-2013 09:58 AM

"Give me the driver Bones"

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 07-21-2013 09:59 AM

I'd like to see Phil bogey 18, just to make it interesting.

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 10:04 AM

Phil figured E was all it would take, but it looks like he's going to get this done with 2 shots to spare.

mlyonsd 07-21-2013 10:06 AM

WTH was that?

kstater 07-21-2013 10:08 AM

Nice shot

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 10:08 AM

Why would Phil even try that? LMAO

Worked out, though. He's got this.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 07-21-2013 10:09 AM

Wow. Thought that was going in the bunker. Great win for Phil.

tk13 07-21-2013 10:09 AM

Molinari plays the same shot Mickelson tried and plunks it into the bunker.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 07-21-2013 10:11 AM

Anyone believe in Westwood or Scott?

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 07-21-2013 10:12 AM

Scott lol

Garcia Bronco 07-21-2013 10:14 AM

Love ya Phil. That's the best you can do and no one could ask more. He's one of the greatest of all time. He just posted a 66 tied for best round of the Tourney.

tk13 07-21-2013 10:14 AM

Money. Phil in the clubhouse at -3.

They're two of the better golfers in the sport, but they're not going -3 on the last 4 holes of this course. These aren't birdie holes.

ptlyon 07-21-2013 10:15 AM

Don't **** up the card Phil

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 10:17 AM

With a 5th major, Mickelson has to be considered a top 10 player of all time.

He'll techically be 15th. Around 10th among Americans.

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 10:22 AM

Scott and Rose finally had their breakthroughs this year, but this will be yet another disappointment for Westwood in a major in a long line of them. Will it ever happen for him?

I don't think so. He's never putted so well in a Major.

No. Outside of all-time greats, you just don't get chances like he's had for extended periods of time.

Garcia Bronco 07-21-2013 10:28 AM

That final putt might win me 1 grand. Amazing: WTF wins a grand betting on Lefty to win a jug? I do.

ptlyon 07-21-2013 10:30 AM

Just think how many majors he'd have if he didn't choall those times

This will be his 8th T-3 in a major since 2008 if he pars in. He's wasted quite a few to say the least. He should have a few chances left considering the level he's playing at, but there's something missing under pressure.

tk13 07-21-2013 10:35 AM

Westwood's always been in the mix the last 4-5 years... I wouldn't count him out yet. It only takes one good week. But he's about to enter Colin Montgomerie territory.

I think it will. The guy seems to have his putter squared up. The pressure got to him today. I have a lot of empathy for guys like LW. He hasn't made excuses or cried like a bitch like Monty has through the years, so I want him to do well.

kstater 07-21-2013 10:47 AM

Scott moved the weight up on the anchor a little too late.

I like Westwood, but there's definitely been something missing under pressure in these events. You could say the same for many major winners at one point in their careers, though.

MahiMike 07-21-2013 10:54 AM

Way to go Phil!

KC_Connection 07-21-2013 10:58 AM

If he wasn't considered as such already, Phil's definitely been the 2nd best player in the Tiger era. Gets one ahead of Els and two ahead of Vijay in majors with this win.

Buck 07-21-2013 11:00 AM

Damnit I woke up so early this morning, 5 am, I'm assuming it was still on then. I would have liked to watch this.

BlackHelicopters 07-21-2013 11:16 AM

Phil's gonna be drinking out of the Claret Jug tonight while Amy rides him reverse cowgirl.

Considering the conditions and circumstances, one of the best rounds in Major championship history.

Definitely one of the best Back 9s of all time...

OnTheWarpath15 07-21-2013 11:50 AM

That might be the best final round in a major I've ever witnessed, all things considered.

Congrats, Phil. Now go get the Grand Slam at Pinehurst next June.

Old Dog 07-21-2013 11:50 AM

WOW....left earlier to go play 18, come back and Lefty is holding the jug. Didn't think that was going to happen.

O.city 07-21-2013 12:46 PM

I did not see a 66 out there today. Great playing Phil.

TribalElder 07-21-2013 12:48 PM

**** yes phil

Prison Bitch 07-21-2013 01:09 PM

Incredible round. He said E or -1 would win and as it turned out Stenson finished second alone with E. I guess he was right.

I. AM. PLEASED.

I never thought Phil could win the Open. I thought Merion was his last good shot to win a major. What a tremendous performance.

I know this sounds hyperbolic, but that was probably the second best final round in a major ever. Only Miller's 63 at Oakmont was definitively better.

Three wins in 2013, including two in Europe, an all-time final round, and another runner up at the US Open. Probably the POY at this point.

You were the first person I thought of when he stroked that 3 wood onto the green on 17.

Cannot wait for Pinehurst.

I'm just now finishing up the coverage. Watched it on tape delay b/c my parents were here, wife had to work last night, and I dropped $300 bucks on landscaping for a playground set (****, rubber mulch is $$$).

Phil's played that well before, Pebble in '11, the 59 at the Grand Slam, but nothing that good with so much on the line.

And that 3 wood was absolutely roasted. If he drops a large bucket there he probably hits one that well

He got a good break on that hole and a great one on 18, but got boned pretty hard on 16.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-21-2013 05:32 PM

Other thoughts:

Westwood actually needed a hot putter and some really good breaks to keep from breaking 80. He put the ball in some horrible spots but always had an out. He'll never win a major.

Tiger didn't really do anything well today. Him screaming "God DAMMIT" on 5 or 6 had my mom cracking up.

Scott putted like a guy with a long putter.

I thought Poulter might gank it after that ridiculous start to the back, but then he remembered that he's Ian Poulter and he's only really clutch in Ryder Cups.

Garcia Bronco 07-21-2013 06:56 PM

Well Francis' playoff round against Vardon is the greatest finish in a Major period. Why? Because it signaled the beginning of the greatness that is American Golf.

Prison Bitch 07-21-2013 10:24 PM

Tiger is furious Phil won. You know he is. Only guy he hated seeing win. He's always looked down at Phil. But te Open win really legitimizes him because 3/4 of his prior majors were at Augusta. To be great you have to win different majors. This might rejuvenate Tiger having Phil playing so well as getting so much press.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-21-2013 10:26 PM

Tiger doesn't need Phil winning majors to rejuvenate himself; he needs to make clutch putts inside of 12 feet.

Prison Bitch 07-21-2013 10:41 PM

Could be a function of practice, who knows. Every great needs a match. Had nadal not come along Federer might've already retired. McEnroe forced Connors to get better and play longer. Jack stayed on his game longer probably because Watson and Teevino and Seve came along. Golfs parity (18/19 majors won by different guys before today and still 18/20) may not motivate Tiger as much. Just a theory

Tiger's biggest rival has always been Jack Nicklaus. Hence the map on his bedroom wall as a child, outlining the path to 19+ majors. Aside from his carnal pleasures, essentially everything in his life has focused upon Nicklaus' record. He doesn't lack for motivation. He lacks the putting stroke of his youth.

Garcia Bronco 07-21-2013 11:25 PM

Tiger is trying. Maybe even too hard. He played awful today and was still in the mix. I don't think he'll win another 4 Majors to even tie Jack because his body is breaking down. I think he'll win another Masters a d maybe an Open. I think for both Phil and Tiger that a US Open is not in reach. They're too old. Who knows with a PGA.

Yeah he is definitely trying a tad too hard. He needs to get back to playing tour golf and sharpening his skills and confidence that way. Sitting out too much I don't think can help matters although I know he was resting his injury. He doesn't really need the cash that tour golf brings, but I think it is the best way to hone his game and his new swing methods. I'm not a big fan of Foley and the stack and tilt, I much prefer the Harmon swing Tiger used, but I understand that his surgically rebuilt knee can't take the load that swing puts on his left leg. Also, his body is breaking down, but his temper I think is what is really hurting him. He is out there GD'ing after every shot and cursing up a storm. 2002 Tiger did not do this, at least I do not remember him being this bad.

Definitely a good win for Mickelson. The dude should have 10 majors right now, just like Norman his game would make you think he would have more majors than he has although 5 is very respectable. The US Open might be his unicorn however.

Just got an email saying my application has been chosen for 2014 Masters Practice Round tickets. I have 4 for Wednesday, the day of the Par 3 tournament.

Sadly, I'm going to have to stay 1:45 away to get a reasonable hotel rate - but I'll take it.

This has been a great year for me golf-wise. Scored my first ace last month, and now I get to cross Augusta National off my bucket list.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-22-2013 05:28 PM

That's awesome. I know that according to some those are the hottest tickets of the entire week. One could probably fund their dues for a few years with the price those tickets fetch to motivated buyers.

My wife and I are going no matter the cost, if the two buddies I have invited decide not to go, then I'll likely sell the tickets and use the money to rent a house closer to Augusta.

I've heard anywhere from $250-$700 for Wednesday tickets.
