Maybe they are hoping to trade Cassel. Even if it is for a 7th rounder it's better than nothing. The least he can do for the team that made him rich is to redo his contract so he is tradeable.

I just wonder if Alex was good last year because the 9ers were just a great team or not... Matt Cassel looked like a world beater on the great Patriots team too...

He will probably be ok with some good protection
