Petro is the only guy I listen to with any regularity. I get why some people find him abrasive or grating, but to me he's the only guy in the market that comes off as professional and competent. And he's the only guy in the market that runs his show like the sports he covers are what's important, and not him. Which is a big selling point to me. Too many of these guys are about self-promotion and/or about talking about what they think about everything. All style over substance. Whereas from Petro, I get a passion for sports more than narcissism. Which is a big selling point to me.

I think Kietzman is the worst for this brand of self-aggrandizement, although Wright isn't far behind. I don't know how his show is in the afternoon drive, but when he was on nights, it was all long diatribes over interviews or callers. And that just didn't work for me.

The caveat to all this is that I'm basically only a fan of football. I don't really care about any other sport. So for much of the year, I just don't listen to anybody. I generally only listen on a daily basis from July to December, with a few hours around the draft. Camp reports are probably my favorite thing.

And when the Chiefs are losing (as they have been for years....), I tend to eventually tune out during the season, too.

But before everything starts to get all "jumping off bridges", I'll listen to just about anybody talking about football, whether it's NCAA or the Chiefs. But I prefer Petro by a pretty wide margin.

A few years ago I would flip back and forth each time one went to commercial. Hardly listen to 610 at all anymore. They're that bad. I think the big guys at 610 need to tell their on-air people to stop talking about 810 all the time. They do a ton of advertising for their competitor by talking about them. 810 acts like 610 doesn't even exist. There is no ratings war going on and it's not even close. 810 blows them away and has for years. I never call in to any of these shows myself, but even the callers on 610 sound dumber. I know alot of people like Nick Wright (I don't know why), but a ton of people can't stand KK so I think there is a chance that after a few months of going head-to-head Nick might have a chance to catch or pass Keitz in the ratings. These two are the most disliked guys on the radio in this town so it should be interesting. That's the only time slot 610 has a chance at.

Chris & Cowboy where terrible and they were replacing bland and blander. The dumbest thing I've seen 610 do was getting rid of DA and putting Twibell in his spot. I remember thinking WTF are these guys doing? He was by far the best I'd heard on 610. I seriously think the people running that station want it to fail or are just complete morons. I never got to hear it, but I've heard several people talk about Whitlock's last day at 610. Guess he was burning the place to the ground over the air and took them a while to get him off. Would love to hear that audio if somebody has it. I've heard it is epic.

I listen to 610 primarily but liked their old set up better. So I suppose it's a little of both now.

They had Nick in the mornings for my good quality sports talk and then Chris & Cowboy for some goofing around. So I got a little of both.

Now it's pretty much just Nick. The new guy in Nick's old time-slot isn't in tune with the local teams as he's from Washington but hearing less about the Royals is okay with me.

810 is okay except for KK. Lets see. BBQ? Check. Racin Boys? Check. A ton of golf? Check.... No thanks.

KK= Smoke'N Fire ads (overpriced BBQ gear), "Racin Boys" (boring talk about guys driving in circles), golf (yaaaawn), K-State (not a fan), Jack Harry (was he hit by lightning? wtf is wrong with that guy?), and a holier-than-thou attitude.

Oh yeah, and also an effete annoying KU fan (seriously, way to represent, Danny ) for a sidekick.

My favorite local sports radio show of the past decade or so was the combination of Jason Whitlock and Neal Jones. But then, I was a Tony Kornheiser fan too when his program aired here.

I'll say this for KK, and it's one of the reasons he stays and probably will stay for a long time- he's the best salesman out of all the radio personalities when it comes to pitching product.
If you're a potential advertiser you'll look at ratings, but you also look at who's going to be reading the spots (if you're paying for the personalities to read them). If I was a car dealer, or a golf shop, I'd much rather have KK read the spot for me that anyone 610's ever had. Chris and Cowboy were entertaining, but the pool of clients willing to let two guys who talk about strippers and gambling promote your product. Plus guys like that usually read through the spots and move on. KK actually sells what he's pimping. He acts like it's personal to him. I don't really care for him, but I guarantee the people he reads spots for like him a lot.

610 talks too much royals BB and I cant stand J Rome, but I listen to both, probably more 810 for the chiefs coverage.:thumb:

Royals talk is terrible. When you start "looking for positives" and assessing minor leaguers by June it crosses over into unlistenable.
Too much rah rah KU on 610 for my taste, too. I realize it's a KU market though.

wildcat09 04-29-2010 07:14 PM

I am so tired of hearing about how bad the Royals are.......that is one dead ass horse

Try being a host and trying to entertain your listeners (obviously your not and you speak for many.) That is hard to do. People who called and wanted to discuss the Royals would not wait that long because it wasn't worth being on hold for.

RedandGold 04-29-2010 08:57 PM

I used to listen to a little of both, but I just can't deal with 610 anymore. If I'm listening to one of the two now, it's going to be 810.

black angus 04-29-2010 09:16 PM

Generally, I'll listen to Petro, anythings better than that tool Rome. At 2 P.M. I usually switch to 580 unless they're talking golf or car racing. Oh and the dude in OKC is correct the sports animal is horrible. It's 70% commercials, and Al Ashback sucks

morphius 04-29-2010 09:17 PM

normally flip back and forth to avoid the 15 minutes of commercials, golf stories, food talk, nascar, etc, etc, etc...

Misplaced_Chiefs_Fan 04-29-2010 09:20 PM

Where's the "I live out of the area and can't listen to either" option?

And no, I don't listen to them on the interwebz either.

KcMizzou 04-29-2010 09:32 PM

A little of both.

Nick Wright's better than I remember him being. I take lunch from 2-2:30. Keitz spends the first 15 minutes pimping a business, Wright gets right to the sports. I appreciate that.

For the morning drive, I prefer St. John and Nate over Fesco.
