Here's Mayock's breakdown of Gabbert:

If the Chiefs went out and go Hankerson at 21 and Pettis in the 3rd, I'd be a pretty happy guy and I think our passing game would be set. Aside from whether or not Cassel can be the guy.

Wow, I thought he'd go 4.4. What's crazy is he's a player that is faster as he goes; his 60 yard might be tops in the whole draft.

He might be moving up to the bottom of the 2nd round at this rate. He's nailing his other drills too. Mid-2nd? This guy is ****ing good.

Big fan of this guy. He just makes plays every time he touches the ball.

Newton is this year's media bad guy. Last year it was Dez.

Does Paea translate as a NT?

According to the National Football Post... no.

Quote:

An explosive, thickly built defensive tackle who displays an impressive first step off the snap and consistently is one of the first defensive linemen moving. Does a great job keeping his base down, back flat and creating leverage for himself into contact. Is able to generate an impressive jolt at the point of attack in both the run and pass game, keeping opposing linemen from getting onto his frame initially off the snap. Demonstrates the first step to cross the face of opposing defenders and shoot his way into the backfield, but also displays good suddenness and body control as a pass rusher inside, cleanly changing directions and using a compact club move — which he added to his arsenal from a year ago — to free himself from blocks inside. However, needs to do a better job extending his arms more consistently into contact off the snap and lacks much of an idea how to counter if his initial rush is stalled.

Possesses impressive anchor strength for his size. However, isn't a guy who will sit into his stance and control blocks in the run game. But his combination burst and lower body strength make him really tough to move off the football. Even vs. the double he has the ability to hold his ground inside. Exhibits good range when asked to close and make plays off his frame, but needs to do a better job using his length to shed blocks. Isn't real long-armed and will struggle to keep himself clean and stack and shed blocks inside. Seems to get high trying to fight his way off blocks and will lose his balance and body control when working his way toward the runs off his frame.

Impression: He's explosive, powerful and can consistently overpower blockers at the point of attack. However, because of his lack of length and ability to cleanly shed blocks in the run game, looks limited to more of a one-gap scheme in the NFL. But has the ability to start and play at a high level early in his NFL career.

Yeah, it's all a conspiracy. Fortunately he never got caught cheating on a test, stealing laptops, nor was he embroiled in one of the great cover-ups in NCAA history

Some receiver has almost stuck 12 feet in the long jump twice. He just hasn't been able to stick the landing enough to keep from moving. I think it's A.J. Green.

Rain Man 02-27-2011 07:54 PM

My bad. It was Julio Jones. He finally settled for an 11-3. The best jump last year was 10-6.

The Bad Guy 02-27-2011 07:57 PM

Part of me really feels that Julio will be drafted ahead of AJ. The combine really elevated his stock.

Is that before or after he put up 225lbs. 49 times?

Apparently he's been the top guy on pretty much every physical test. He's sure impressing the commentators.

On an unrelated note, Mike Mayock is really, really self-confident. He was giving Cam Newton some pointers on pattern progression, which I found kind of funny.

I'd be stunned if that happened. AJ was a hell of a lot more productive in the same conference with inferior talent around him.

The scouting report was written before the combine. Just because he set the bench press record doesn't mean his film was wrong and he can dominate in a two gap defense overnight....

aturnis 02-27-2011 11:04 PM

I realize that, but that kind of power shows he should have the ability to shed blocks left and right. Maybe he wasn't coached well enough to. Hell, the biggest difference between who Hali was 3 yrs ago and who his is not is his sudden ability to use his hands and use them well. He got even better at it this year. I can't tell you for sure who coached him to do that, but I know this offseason they brought in the martial arts expert who is subbed by NFL teams to teach the players hand combat.

If Paea wasn't trained to properly use his upper body strength to disengage blockers, it could be a big reason why he isn't able to do it. Some things seems simple, but there's a right and wrong way to do things.
