While I basically agree with you ang, in my case 2 people are losing their jobs mostly because we need to cut payroll for at least a quarter... maybe two... to make room for "more important" projects... and the two that are going would be fine otherwise.

I have fired two people I was friends with. We remained friends but not really as close. Twenty years later I don't suppose it really matters.

"You need to go see Ray Farmer. Oh, take your playbook with you."

Rule number one, NEVER hire a friend and never become friends with an employee. Keep it all business and just "friendly", don't hang out with employees. Business is just business and find your friends elsewhere.

I had to fire a guy on Friday. He went home and killed his family then himself.

Whoa? Are you serious? Are you ok? That's a bummer.

This has been covered. Doesn't apply here.

Well the deed has been done and went as well as can be expected. He said he figured it was coming and understood... then a little bitterness came out in texts last night, however not directed towards me... just the situation, which is understandable.

In the end he said "lets get a beer sometime next week" so I guess we're still friends which I'm glad about.

I went with the quick and honest approach which I thought was the best way all along but I was glad to get so much confirmation from this thread, so thanks to all.

Kiss of death. He hates you now.

I've had to fire friends twice, now I don't really make friends with people that work for me unless they are top performers. Those top performers I promote into functions that allow for the friendship.
