Game. Blouses.

Direckshun was right, that was an eight minute set... a rocking tour de force, dudes still got it.
I might just buy his new album after hearing that. |

Prince was easily the best part of that show.
Everything else was pretty much complete garbage. I can't remember a worse episode than that. Didn't even look like they rehearsed the ****ing show. Jesus. |

The last 2 weeks have proven that the number of back-up dancers is inversely proportional to the talent of the musician. Prince had none, Iggy Azalea had about a dozen.

Damn that Prince performance was Epic

Worst SNL in some time, aside from Prince. Chris Rock should be better than that.
|
I watched like twenty minutes and it was just unfunny. Woody Harrelson and Kendrick Lamar in a few weeks definitely piqued my interest though.

Wuff dah fuff wass up wiff Woo-ey lass nighhhhh?

Put an all time cast together.
You get four males, four females. |

Bill Murrey is hilarious, but is he really an SNL All Timer?

I'd probably sub in Maya Rudolph or Molly Shannon in for Radner. I'd definitely sub in Dana Carvey for Hader, and while Farley was epic, I'm tempted to sub him out for Martin Short. |

Now if Jiminy Glick had been an SNL character, . . . |

Martin's acting chops are way out of Farley's league, though. Acting is super underrated on SNL.

He might be the single most naturally funny guy in American history. Even the worst, most ill-conceived sketches had me chuckling somewhere if Farley was involved. And the best sketches are among the funniest sketches of SNL all-time. |
Agreed that he was brilliant, but he's not exactly a team player, however, is he?
You're not doing Who's On First with Farley. |
I absolutely have to highlight this. It's a skit they cut from this week's SNL with Kevin Hart/Sia.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ZWMlr11pJow" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Kyle Mooney is absolutely incredible in this. Maybe the finest piece of comedy acting I've seen on a technical level in a decade. Am I crazy for saying that? The piece as a whole is very well written, and the production is great. But Kyle Mooney is just a master at inventing a character and inhabiting his skin. He is absolutely perfect for this role. |
The gentrification skit was awesome.

I'm just not understanding all of the Kate McKinnon love in the "pick 4 ALL TIMERS" thing... she's a ****ing noob, did everyone suddenly forget Molly Shannon or Cheri Oteri?
|
Molly Shannon, like Chris Farley, was a total force of nature. She wasn't a precise comedy delivery mechanism, which I tend to prefer.
Edit: This is McKinnon at her best. She enters at 4:40, sets fire to the skit, and disappears. She's a genius. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Cbwr37tHu24" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Molly, at her best, was just as funny as Chris Farley. Maybe not AS funny because she didn't have his hilarious body at her disposal, but she was still a brilliant physical comedian in her own right.
Loved Molly. Had a mega-crush on her back in the day. Still do to this day, I suppose. |

Outside of Beiber and Olga or Merkel (three characters in three years? pretty good but gimme more longevity), Kate hasnt compiled nearly the dossier as Molly or several other gals... I want longevity and memorable characters, Kate is still a three year member still finding her way IMO. |

Whether it's an outlandish character of her own creation, or an impersonation, or a backup/background role, or to just stand there looking either gorgeous OR hideous, you see her and reliably say 'yeah! that's what we were looking for.' She has that rare mix of a chameleon who can grab the center stage in an instant. A sketch comedy Verbal Kent. |
Kate's Russian lady who saw the meteor was the best thing ever. Cecily strong is my fav, though.

I kinda like Aidy Bryant. She's pretty damn funny in almost anything I've seen her in.

Belushi as Joe Cocker is unparalleled, IMO

Pete Jones has been strong...and Taran Killam has done a lot of good work. I a, higher on Jost and Che than most but isn't he age of Twitter the degree of difficulty on their job goes way up.
Kevin Hart...I dunno...just not really into his act. You can tell he works really hard it was impressive how much of the show he took on. Guy has a lot of talent but I don't find him particularly funny. |
That Wishin Boot video was pretty spot on random. Me like.
|
I loved the Deflategate opener...
"$26 million a year!!! is that a lot??? I dont knooow things, I'm not a science computer!!!" |
I liked Molly Shannon a lot.
But, Oteri? Very Meh. |

Blake shelton was pretty good. Wishing boot and hee-haw parody's were top notch.

how has the show been lately? - It must have been 2 years now since I've caught one - I never think about it being on. Will try to remember to check it out soon.

Can't believe that anyone would be offended by that.

Guess for some SNL comparing the Army to ISIS is as offensive as Scott Walker comparing union protestors to ISIS. Doesn't bother me, but it's not inconceivable in our offense taking anonymous online social media world, that a few would be bothered enough to tweet. |
Also
Hey, I can't poop while you're in here, and I know you're just doing your hair, . . . So I'm gonna hafta ask you to get the **** OUTTTTTTT! |
Yeah, the ISIS thing was funny, IMO. Lots of people with their panties up in a bunch over SNL doing what SNL was built on. If we can't make fun of the worst group of people in the world, then who can we make fun of?

And strangely, Dakota Johnson hits this weird spot of a perfectly lovely and objectively attractive girl I just don't find myself personally attracted to. Don't know what it is, she's certainly far out of my league and there's nothing tangible that's a turn off in the least. Just more of a friend or sister thing.
Though I thought her getting pissy with her mom at the Oscars was funnier than anything on SNL [which was a decent enough episode, though. Not a slight.] <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7VdAUNa-OVg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I'm not sure if its uniform across America, but some of you may have noticed that SNL plays a classic episode from 9-10 before the NBC nightly news... I've watched a handful of incredible shows that reminded me why I like the show so much.
Tonight is no exception... Jim Carrey and Soundgarden from 1996, its almost a guaranteed winner, from the days when every single episode was a winner. I'll probably be in bed by the time the JK Simmons rerun airs at 10:30, but you can bet I'll be up for this rerun... just a friendly heads up. |

Seriously dont think its because, as some people have told me, that I'm too old and my humor is dated, either... I'm on the intrawebs constantly, I know whats hip these days, swear on my grandpa I'm the youngest 44 year old since forever... fact is the show just isnt that good right now. You've got Killam, Thompson, and to a lesser extent, Pharoah and McKinnon... Kyle Mooney has potential as well, but its a far cry from the 90's IMO. |
Quote:
Maybe it was their writing skills. I saw James Franco's behind the scenes doc and Casey in particular seemed daunted by the pitch process. Interesting bit of inside pool, it appears that one of the most prolific writers of recent was back when JB Smoove was on staff. Someone was talking about him and instead of one or two ideas, he'd have pages and pages of bit ideas that the writers room loved. Like, new stuff each week. Talked like listening to JB pitch was the funnest part of their week. I could picture it and would love to have seen some of them. |
How they go about the writing/casting process is probably the single most talked about and interesting thing about the show... I've certainly always wondered how that all plays out, how much is writers and how much is the talent pitching ideas etc
JB Smoove... know exactly who he is, but until now didnt know he'd been a popular writer there, interdasting. Seems like from, say, the 90's back that the performers had a LOT more say in the writing process and now it "seems" to be all about the writers... all I can honestly say is that it just doesnt tickle my funny bone like it used to, its much more hit and miss. |
Taran and McKinnon alone are good enough to keep me coming back.
I'm really glad that we're in the McKinnon era instead of the Wiig era. I like Wiig as an actress, but when she writes herself characters it's more about performing difficult things [talking fast, being whiny, that God awful thing with Armisen making up songs on the spot] than being funny. |
Quote:
Wiig... I never fully understood why Lorne put her to the front of the line so often, myself. In an interesting twist though, her and Armisen were so far bad that it seemed to come full circle back around to good... I liked those skits in spite of myself. So bad they couldnt be ignored. |
Quote:
She's obviously quick-witted and versatile. I just find her more irritating than funny BECAUSE I know what she's going for. You've seen it. 'Audience, give me a place, give me an occupation, give me a reason to argue. . . . AND GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!' |
Quote:
|
Quote:
Not one I can think of, those older shows and casts were just much better. Lorne should BEG writers like Jim Downey and Adam McKay to come back, and while he's at it why not call up some of the old alum that arent doing much these days like Jim Bruer, Tim Meadows etc? |
The lifeguard skit was the tits
