I guess this is part of the problem of listening to the books rather than reading them, as I didn't pick up on it at all. I remember the talk about her, but I came to no conclusion as to whom she may be....

It was never stated who she was. There are several very good guesses, but until its put into print, we don't know.

True enough, but one possibility above all others makes 100% perfect sense and also explains Ned's sensitivity to the subject. I'd bet the house that it's...

Spoiler!

Frazod 10-30-2010 11:16 AM

Oh, the latest update (don't remember where I read it, get over it) is that Martin is being severely pressured by his publisher to wrap shit up on Dance with Dragons and announce a release date by the end of the year.

Of course, whether it happens or not is, as always, a matter of conjecture.

Procrastinating ****. FINISH THE BOOK GODDAMMIT :cuss:

Martin's latest blog entry is promising...

Oct. 27th, 2010 at 9:59 AM

"Ashford Castle has some impressive halls and chambers... but nothing to compare to the high hall of the Eyrie, and the throne room in the Red Keep of King's Landing. Hot damn.

I'd say more, but in a few minutes we're off to Castle Black and the Wall."

Could that mean he's actually writing.... ?

Sure. The problem is he could be working on Dragons, or one of the later books.

I read it that he was taking a tour of the sets for the TV show. But I don't remember Ashford castle from the books...

It's insane, yeah?! I'm trying to be careful to use spoiler tags when I post about the books. Sorry if I'm ruined anything for you.

Keep reading. The first book is just lights out. The second one is a little slower, but still really nice. This third one is ... just ... WOW.

No worries, nothing ruined. I am about 3/4 the way through the first book. It's amazing in that it has 3 MAJOR storylines intertwined expertly (battle for the crown, the Dothraki and the Others). I have read tons of Stephen King so I do appreciate an author that can flesh out and make me care about so many different characters at once, similar to King's "The Stand".

Enjoy it. Mostly it's downhill after SOS. And who knows if he ever releases the next one.

Red Brooklyn 11-03-2010 03:46 PM

It's absurd, but so many people have told me how disappointed they are with FOC, that it kinda makes we want to read it. Sometimes bad press is so alluring.

Actually, I'm definately taking a break after I finish up SOS. I have a lot of other books on deck that I'm really excited to get to. Maybe I'll hit up FOC once the next one is actually published. :)

Red Brooklyn 11-04-2010 09:18 AM

I have definately hit the "crack" portion of this novel. I've read almost 150 pages in the last 24 hours. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but given that I worked 8 of those hours, slept another 8 of those hours, worked out and ate meals during that time, and I'm the slowest reader I know... that's epic! :)

Hell, it took me a week to read the first 150 pages or so!

Red Brooklyn 11-04-2010 10:42 AM

Also...

Spoiler!

So awesome.

Huffmeister 11-04-2010 10:47 AM

You know, I really get sick of people using 'epic' to describe things, but the ending of that book was truly epic.

And it might be a good idea to hold off on Feast For Crows until the next book comes out. Since the next book is supposed to be the other side of Crows (ie, going through the same time period, but from different character's perspectives), you might avoid some of the disappointment with Crows that others have felt (myself included).

I am behind all of the rest of you, I just finished Game of Thrones and got through part of the prologue to Kings this morning. Quite an ending to that book, I must say.

I can't wait to see how HBO brings it to life. I don't trust most tv networks or movie studios, but I do trust HBO to not screw it all up. They nailed the casting for Eddard. I will have to look more on IMDB to see who they cast in the rest of the roles.

I don't know a lot of the actors, and that's probably a good thing. I would say they nailed casting Tyrion and the actor playing Jaime Lannister definitely looks the part, as does the actor playing the Knight of Flowers. I wouldn't think Cersei was such a hottie given how big of a c**t she is, but I guess it can work.

Are you using the post earlier in this thread to see the actors? I didn't see one for Loras Tyrell.

As for the Cersei comment, I picture her to be hotter than doughnut grease, with her being such a **** being part of how freaking hot she is.

If you watched Spartacus Blood and Sand, I picture her to be something like this actress who played Ilithyia, but even hotter.

http://www.moviefancentral.com/image..._90755e507.jpg

I haven't seen many photos of the one they have slated to play Cercei, but will be dissappointed if she is anything less than stunning.

Red Brooklyn 11-09-2010 09:31 AM

I also think the Varys, Littlefinger and Dany actors are lights out, near-genius strokes. Those are all dead-on, I think.

And I think Cercei looks perfect. Once she goes blonde, I bet she'll look exactly how I pictured her while reading.

I love that I'm not familiar with all the actors, as well. It should really add something "authentic" to the piece, if that makes sense.

With many of the actors not being household names (except for maybe Eddard Stark for LOTR fans), it really helps you to get more into the character than getting into the actor playing the character.

I am about 15% into Clash of Kings right now, still trailing behind most everybody but I am reading pretty quickly. My kindle is getting two hours of use each day in my commute to/from work.

I was checking the IMDB page about a week back. Jon Snow looks to be a decent pick too.

I am wondering what they will do with the direwolves, whether they will be CGI or not. I imagine in Game of Thrones you might get away with using large trained wolves because the direwolves weren't full-grown but it seems a full-grown direwolf is much bigger than a normal wolf. I hope they show Grey Wind tearing ass through a battefield in the series.

I wonder about the CGI a lot actually. As far as the direwolves go, I'd rather them just use wolves than go with CGI. I know the direwolves are bigger in the novel, but I'd personally rather see just regular wolves than weird CGI or puppets or something like that else equally as trappy or stupid.

There are a lot of other things - especially in the books after aGoT - that are going to be hard to pull off; things that seem likely to drive up the cost of production. And probably court a necessary CGI. Though, I'd like to see that limited as much as possible.

Breaking down the preview parts:

Beginning, where they behead the runaway black.

Deanarys with some big buff dude.

Jamie and crew drawing swords on Ned and crew after the Imp was taken captive.

Some talking

Imp being taken at the inn

Daenarys with one of her ladies

Cersei? talking to Ned

Ned fighting against the Lannisters from when they drew swords earlier

Jon

Imp slapping Joffrey? Must be him with the colors he wears.

Melee at the tournament, I assume the one Sansa is at where Loras give her a rose

Some chick getting it on. Looks like the Imp on bottom maybe...perhaps a flashback of he and his first wife

Can't tell where the fighting is...thought perhaps the wall, but I don't see a lot of black.

If I hadn't read the books, there are parts that may have seen me throwing something through my TV screen if it I was caught offguard. I saw one scene in that clip where Arya was up on a column overlooking a large gathering that made some angry feeling stir as it was.

I am about 80% through Clash of Kings, and holy shit, Martin doesn't mind having main characters murderated out of nowhere. Anyone is fair game, and that's a good thing. I honestly have ZERO idea where the story could be going for the rest of the book and Storm of Swords.

Okay people I need some help. Im reading and Im only like 170 pages in or something....I'm at the part where.....
Spoiler!

Anyways I'm having trouble of keeping track of who is who.

I'm afraid to look up a relationship chart on the internet because I don't want to be spoiled. Can you help me.

I think I just realized that Eddard is Ned, right? I didn't realize they were the same until an entired Eddard chapter used only the name Ned.

Okay So Eddard Stark is the father of which kids? And his wife is Catelyn right?

Who is Robert and how is he related to them?

Those are my main questions for now and try to not spoil me, thanks.

Blankey 12-14-2010 06:00 PM

There should be a character glossary at the back of the book.

Been a while since I read the books but...
Eddard is Ned.
Robb, Bran, Rickon, Sansa, Arya, & Jon Snow are Ned & Catelyn's kids. Snow is the bastard.
King Robert & Ned are old friends who grew up in the same house under Jon Aryyn

allen_kcCard 12-14-2010 07:09 PM

Buck 12-14-2010 07:18 PM

Question for those of you who read the first book.

Did Ned end up killing Lady? That whole thing sort of ended abruptly when they brought the butcher's son's body to Ned.

Or should I just keep reading to find out?

Ok Buck, here you go, spoiler-free.

Eddard is Ned. That had me confused for a bit too. Ned's wife is Catelyn (of House Tully of Riverrun). His chidren he had with Catelyn from oldest to youngest are: Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon. Ned has a bastard son that lives with them at Winterfell, Jon Snow.

Robert is Ned's best friend. He ascended to become King after the Targaryens were ousted from the throne (and where Jamie Lannister earned the title Kingslayer).

My comments in bold. Given how well Tyrion is written, I wouldn't be surprised if Peter Dinklage got an Emmy nomination. The Tyrion character kicks ass in so many ways.

Overall the book is very adult in nature but I really appreciate the subtle little laughs I get from it. Case in point, the names of the direwolves: Ghost (awesome), Grey Wind (pretty cool), Nymeria (kickass), Summer (makes sense), Lady (also makes sense) and............Shaggydog. I laughed my ass off during that part.

My comments in bold. Given how well Tyrion is written, I wouldn't be surprised if Peter Dinklage got an Emmy nomination. The Tyrion character kicks ass in so many ways.

I wanted to disagree on that being Khal at first, but looking at it closer I'll have to agree instead. That is the first shot I'd seen of him without his hair loose, but comparing pics of the actor and that shot can't be disputed.

I just assumed it given the fact that he is by far the most prominent Dothraki in the book and is a central figure to the Dani Stormborn storyline. He has bloodriders but they don't take prominent roles individually all that much. The main characters for that particular book in that storyline are Dani, Viserys, Illyrio, Ser Jerah and Khal Drogo (there is another character near the end of the book but revealing that character would be spoilerlicious).

I cannot stop talking about these damn books.

For those that watch the series and don't read the book in advance, it will be filled with surprises. With that said, I imagine there will be lots of people pooping in their britches in the final episode. The whole book was filled with holy shit moments, the moments at the end were more like holy f**king f**k moments.

I assumed it wasn't because of his hair and skin color. That is the lightest his skin has been that I have seen in shots so far, and in all the other pics I've seen of him he had long black hair, I assumed to show off the bells that should be in them. In that one, his hair is apparently pulled back behind him, but his nose if pretty clearly matching the face of the actor playing Khal.

And also of note...Daenarys looks to be the hottest one I've seen much of in the clips...which is a little creepy to me since I keep thinking of her as a 13 YO from the books.

I just really, really hope that they don't cut Beric Dondarrion from the TV show, but I have a feeling that he and Thoros will be cast aside.

We'll get a better idea if they get any screen time during the Hand's tourney.

It may be tough because, besides the Hand's tourney/melee, they talked about them in the books quite a bit but it was always stories of what they did told by someone else, not firsthand accounts. They are kickass characters though.

There was a website that really disected the screencaps from the previews and someone thought they spied Thoros in one of the shots. If they show any part of the melee, they obviously have to show Thoros.

This is a great reference site to refresh your memory: http://www.towerofthehand.com/

You can expand/focus the scope of each entry by book so you don't spoil anything, but if you haven't finished the first one it could potentially spoil the first book's big moments.
