It tastes good, sure.
But it's not in there w/ the others, for true representation. Ever been to Smokey Bones owned by the Olive Garden? it's pretty much the same as what I recall my experience w/ Jack Stack, was. JS was better, but their approach to bbq was/is about the same thing. JMO |

Gates=must try, true representation of the regions signature plate. slaw, beans and all. AB's=must try, true representation of the regions signature plate. potato-salad, beans and all. JS=ok sure - if you want an acoustically balanced upscale dinning room experience, w/ sides like cheesy-corn. |

But if you want to talk the best BBQ from the total menu and after my recent visit......I'll listen to arguments for OK Joe's. |

I love BBQ threads and opinions, there's just no way to really lose (unless you end up having to try that nothing-but-shit BBQ they have in TexAss [heavy on the Ass!!!])... I know when I get back from Sandy Eggo this coming Friday, I'm going to try to swing WAY OUT OF MY WAY and stop by Oklahoma Joe's...
|
I have an old video starring Jeff Stehney about cooking Q. It's interesting because it reveals secrets about how he does it. That being said, I'm sure he had to modify what he did in competitions to satisfy his customers at OK Joe's.

Some places might have a sig item (beans at JS) that is better than the same thing at Joes, but Joes does everything great. Their pulled pork/sausage/brisket/ribs are better than anyone elses.

And I'm not sure I'd agree that beans or fries are ever a good reason to pick a BBQ place as the "best" BBQ.. Now, if we ever have a best "beans" or "fries" or "bathroom" or "girl at the register" thread (feel free to start onbe!!), go for it, tells us about their beans... BBQ is about the meat, not the fluff. If not, let argue who has softer napkins... |

I have a long-standing problem with Jack Stack, mainly because of their "burnt ends." They're just not burnt ends. Their beans are damn tasty, though. |

Along with the inverse of Jack's Stack beans with the rest of their bbq.

BB's Lawnside BBQ is completely terrible. Why the hell did three people vote for that shithole?

As I have lived in KC a while longer and tried more places I find there is a give and take between something being very good and very consistent.
AB's is my favorite place..but they simply are not always good. They are weak in the consistency department...but when it is on I love it. I live right by OKJ's now and it is always good but I don't really see it that high above other places...at least as far as how popular it is these days except for their ribs. Their ribs are simply exceptional and no matter what you get OKJ is consistently quite good. |
Zarda's isn't worthy of an honorable mention.
|
While Danny Edwards BBQ sauce isn't the best i will say they cook the best beef brisket i have ever tasted. Check it out.

I need to try Johnny's again. I got a sammich from them a while back, and it sucked. it was two pieces of plain white bread, and smothered in sauce. I like sauce, don't get me wrong, but the sauce turned the plain bread into a pink dough mess.
meat was decent though; although I was irritated about the bread so it was hard to enjoy the rest of it. I'll give it a shot again though. |
National magazine says KC BBQ ranks behind Texas and Memphis.

You missed a pretty damn good one on the list up there (Not the Poll) Wabash in Excelsior Springs, MO
Edit...I just completely over looked it, my bad. |
I like LC's. Love the big fries. Love the burnt ends and turkey sandwich. Love the sauce. The place is a shithole and the service is the most unfriendly I've probably ever had at an eating establishment, but it's good so I keep coming back. Even though I could get shot, I've been there dozens of times and haven't had any problems yet.
The only time I ate at Arthur Bryants was the one at the casino lol. It was utter shit. I can't judge off of that location though obviously. Gotta try the real thing next time. LC's opened a restaurant in Olathe or Overland Park a long time ago. I believe it's gone now. It was awful. Gotta have that rundown burnt out black smoker that looks like it was a set piece in Nightmare On Elm Street. Just not the same without it. |

I think Gates gets a free pass as a de facto place for good BBQ.
I had tons of other great BBQ around town either by a home smoker/BBQer, or hole in the wall place. Gates is severely overrated, IMO. |

I would say it's the best in Fla. but that wouldn't really be saying much, would it? |
What happened to Bucks BBQ in Wichita? It used to be pretty good, that was many years ago but its gone now. When I lived there it was always packed. It may have went downhill or the economy in Wichita might have severely hurt business.

You sure 95 or 96? I graduated and left, but I visited my folks many times before they passed away and it seems much later that Wabash arrived? I only got to try it once myself years ago. Is the consensus that its pretty good?

It used to be pretty damn good. I haven't had a good meal there in years, though. Their sauce still rules. |

I should've visited when I was in town a couple months ago. Had been a few years since I'd been to the ES. Cool to see another former "mineral water" townie!

I like places that have multiple sauces to get different flavors to dip fries or bread in. My favorite sauces tend to have some spice to them, though. |

Has anyone tried The Rub barbecue in Olathe? They are close by where I work and opened a few months ago. I've eaten there twice and they put out some quality Q.

There is a new BBQ place that has entered into the KC market. Jon Russels BBQ. He has won the American Royal BBQ contest several times and decided to open his own restaurant. He's a buddy of Cosmic Pal. At last weeks game in tampa we had him ship us some BBQ for the tailgate.
The brisket was the best I've ever had anywhere. The sausage was right up there too. And remember we had our tailgate two days after it was shipped to us. It's a good assumption that its even better fresh. Just a heads up to the KC BBQ fans. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8048/8...e8e6a91b_c.jpghttp://www.jonrussellsbbq.com/ |
