Actually, it sort of does. This isnt a case of trying to prove God doesnt exist. In this case, we pretty much know everything there is to know about all the games that have been played for the last several decades. When you fail to find a correlation between catchers who supposedly "know how to handle pitchers" and good pitching performances, that pretty much disproves the link.

No one is saying catchers have NO impact on the pitcher whatsoever. They are saying that if there is an impact, it is so insignificant that its not worth mentioning. (aside from just basic competence, like a catcher who doesnt allow tons of passed balls and can throw people out)

or as Baseball Prospectus puts it:

Quote:

Though we would colloquially say that game-calling doesn’t exist, it’s more accurate to say that if there is a true game-calling ability, it lies below the threshold of detection. There is no statistical evidence for a large game-calling ability, but that doesn’t preclude that a small ability. For example, a genuine game-calling ability that reduces a pitcher’s ERA by 0.01, resulting in a savings of about 1.6 runs per year for the entire team and could be masked by the statistical variance in the sample size we have to work with. Players would need to play thousands more games than they actually do to have enough data to successfully detect such a skill statistically.

Royals are getting an early start to the DL this season.

This just in a half hour ago: Alex Gordon is out 3-4 weeks (broken thumb). Anyone's guess whether he'll be available (or still too rusty) for opening day, but he's going to miss most of spring training.

At some point, probably sooner rather than later, it will be in the best interest of both the club and Gordon for them to part ways.

Unfortunately, the primary point of comparison was the fact that Schmidt also caught pop-ups at shoulder level.

no matter if the fans stop going to game it isn't going to send a message to the royals franchise. They luck out that there isn't another draw that gets people out there. if the royals had no "fans" go to games they would still draw decently of people just going there to get drunk and be together with other dueches.

I'm actually going to Royals game in KC this year. I can't even remember the last time I actually saw them play there - it may have been when I was in high school. Tried to go in 2003 but the game got rained out. Normally I see them up here, and normally they get the shit kicked out of them. Would be nice if they could actually win one goddamn game for me.

We went last year on our annual summer vacation back home to MO and I thought the stadium renovations were really nice. The HOF was fantastic.

If the team were half as good as the stadium, it would be division champs every year.

But that was a once-a-year experience. I can't imagine going to lots of games and having to watch that shit. I finally canceled my MLB package on DirecTV this year because I didn't think I could justify the expense any more -- I just got tired of watching the team by June each year. When they convince me they're competitive again, I'll probably re-subscribe. But I've really dialed back my fandom, much as I hate to say it. I've been with them for 35 years, 20 years of losing have just worn me to a nub.

Love Triangle in Kansas City Baseball Case

Posted Mar 8th 2010 2:54PM by TMZ Staff
<!-- sphereit start -->An ugly love triangle made its way to court today between Rod Stewart's son, Sean Stewart, Kansas City Royals catcher Jason Kendall and his estranged wife, Chantel.

TMZ was in court this AM as Kendall's lawyer made a bid to allow Kendall to take the divorcing couple's two kids to Kansas City for baseball season.

Chantel, who came to court with boyfriend Sean Stewart, is trying to block the move. There have been numerous accusations between Jason and Chantel of physical and emotional abuse.

Chantel has suggested in legal papers that Jason is overusing Adderall, which he says he's taking for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The judge continued the case until March 18.

Bianchi projects to be pretty mediocre even if he's not injured.

Not attempting to stir !@#$ here, but Bianchi had a shot at being a 4-5 year utility man in the league, but if he's your SS, you'd better have a HOFer somewhere else in your lineup to pickup the slack.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still trade the pile of !@#$ shortstop we drafted instead of Rick Porcello when our owners cheaped out on us in 2007 - Pete Kozma (they flat out admitted that they had Porcello ranked higher but liked Kozma's signability). Bianchi should see the majors someday, Kozma shouldn't even see AAA.

But he's not a guy I'd project out too far.

The Twins are screwed, Joe Nathan tore his elbow. He's gonna try to rest for two weeks and tough it out, but experts are already saying that will have almost no chance of working out. He is probably gone for this year and part of next year for Tommy John surgery.

What makes this particularly bad for them is the fact that the Twins are massively overpaying him. Yes, he's a great closer, but you dont give him #2 starter money (11.25M, this year and next)

I realize that many might freak at this, but:

We need to explore what we could get in return for Soria. Are the Twins trying to make a push for anything? Trying to better position themselves to sign Mauer? If so, let's check on this.

No, no, no. I completely disagree.

Butler plays 1B every single day. He just started to develop into an impact, middle-of-the-order bat. Leave him alone.

Don't start giving him the Teahen treatment, especially to try to get worthless shits like Guillen and (to a lesser extent) Gordon ABs.

FWIW

Wife and I have been in Surprise since last Thurs. Went to Sat. and last nights game. That was my ugly mug in the Hawkeye polo behind home plate. Been to a couple practices and minor league inter-squad games.

While I don't think the big league team is going to finish .500, I think they'll look like a Major League team. Defense should be better, and they seem to be finally grasping the importance of pitch selection and situational hitting.
Farns looked good Sat. His pitches actually had movement. We'll see if that, or his 1st game, was the fluke.

Jarrod Dyson probably won't break camp with the team, but he's been impressive. Maier looks like a guy fighting for his life. He finally seems to be swinging the bat with a purpose instead of just to make contact. He should win the 4th OF spot over Anderson.

But it's watching the minor leaguers that gives me hope. Moose is in much better shape that when I saw him play last year. The kid can flat out rake. Will Meyers looks like a man among boys in A camp. Hosmer didn't impress in either BP or fielding drills. Didn't get to see Montgomery or Melville pitch. Lou Coleman looked good in the game I watched.

If you ever get the chance to come down for ST, do it!

Report: Nats release outfielder Elijah Dukes

According to the Nationals' official Twitter feed, the club has released outfielder Elijah Dukes.
No reason was given. Dukes hit a disappointing .250/.337/.393 over 416 at-bats in 2009, but he's just 25 years old and was expected to serve as the Nationals' starting right fielder this season. On top of that, he was only going to require a $444,000 salary in 2010. It's not clear who will start in right field. Mar. 17 - 10:12 am et

Think we should try to get this guy, even though he's kinda looney to replace guillen

We really do. A starting rotation of Grienke, Mesche, Crow, and Tejeda would be solid. Then I'd strongly consider trying Hoch and Banny in the pen since ours is so horrible anyways.

Royals' Anderson hits for cycle

Brian Anderson hit for the cycle in four innings and went 5-for-5 with seven RBI before being lifted from the Royals’ 24-9 win over the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Incredible. Anderson doubled and tripled off Billy Buckner, singled off Chad Qualls and then hit a two-run homer off Clay Zavada, all before the fourth inning was over. He added another single in his fifth at-bat and then was removed for a pinch-runner before he could do any additional damage. The huge game made him 11-for-27 with six extra-base hits this spring. He was turning into the underdog in a battle with Mitch Maier for a bench spot, but he is the better player of the two. Mar. 19 - 7:41 pm et

How is that possible? I'd think he could at least look good in warmups if not in a real game.

We really do. A starting rotation of Grienke, Mesche, Crow, and Tejeda would be solid. Then I'd strongly consider trying Hoch and Banny in the pen since ours is so horrible anyways.

What happened to Kyle Davies?
