That's a helluva' lot for a T-shirt.

That said, you can get this

http://www.superheroden.com/images/t...t2_312_312.jpg

or this

http://www.superheroden.com/images/C...ack_Shirt2.jpg

for $20. Twice the price, true, but it's not one of those generic black shirts with logo...

Did anyone see Gareth Edwards first flick "Monsters" ?

I really liked it. it was pretty basic, but he stayed focused in character. Mainly due to the low budget though.....

Its available on Netflix.

Deberg_1990 05-02-2014 09:35 AM

Some early reaction from someone who's seen it. Apparently, they hold back the big Godzilla reveal until nearly the end.

Are you expecting the reboot of Godzilla to feature an endless array of monster-on-monster fight scenes, where two nigh-invincible creatures slug each other with computer-generated punches until one of them finally goes down for the count? If so, you’d better wait for the fourth Transformers film, because Godzilla is so not that movie. In fact, though the press saw Godzilla for the first time today in Los Angeles, they didn’t actually see much of the titular monster, who remains an elusive presence in his very own film. Director Gareth Edwards wouldn’t have had it any other way.
“[If] you throw everything you can at the screen, you’ve got nowhere else to go,” said Edwards after the screening, when Vulture asked him about his bold approach to the film, which holds back the first reveal of Godzilla — and the first full-fledged fight — for as long as possible. His goal, said Edwards, was “not to frustrate the audience, but to tease them. It’s kind of like cinematic foreplay.”

How will that go over in a multiplex more accustomed to orgiastic spectacle than foreplay? We’d love to tell you how it played today, but we’re under embargo; what we are allowed to tell you is how Edwards carefully calibrated his approach to the central creature, who is mostly seen in glimpses until the very end. “What we were trying to do when we designed the movie was to incrementally build and build,” said Edwards. “So hopefully, you get the big climax at the end and it has the maximum power possible — and then it’s the end credits.”

This reboot, then, is the sort of exercise in anticipation that recalls movies like Jaws, Alien, and Jurassic Park, and Edwards said it was the latter film in particular — which, like Godzilla, holds back the big Tyrannosaurus Rex reveal until an hour has passed — that served as his primary touchstone in several ways. “Jurassic Park has thirty visual effects shots in it, and it’s one of the classics,” he noted, explaining his judicious approach to CGI. (There’s plenty of effects work in the film, but it’s used mostly to convey the massive aftermath of those discreetly glimpsed monster battles, which wreck several cities.) Edwards said he tried to resist the temptation “to get seduced by the spectacle of it too much, because in my opinion, you can end up reaching a plateau” of CGI fatigue.
Let Godzilla's incredibly effective marketing campaign serve as your barometer, then: Those terrific trailers are mostly made of mood, serving some striking city visuals and terrified reaction shots with just a sliver of Godzilla himself, and the feature-length film pretty much sticks to that recipe, too. You won't have to wait much longer to see how it all comes together: Godzilla is out May 16.

Doesn't tell me much. Screen time and building up to the reveal is old hat for entertainment and presentation. If the story is compelling and the actors good (which this cast is) the movie can still be a winner.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes comes to mind- almost all back story yet wonderfully done.

Those 70's flicks were so cheesy, they were cool.

We don't get to see nearly enough of that in this day and age.

In the 70's and 80's there were actually enjoyable B movies.

Now they're mostly unwatchable crap, even in the MST3000 or Best Of The Worst sense...

A mostly positive review from IGN:

Quote:

THE VERDICT

Legendary Pictures' Godzilla origin story carries the weight of unwieldy expectations, but rather than buckle, it is ultimately a fantastic - though imperfect - example of the genre. Gareth Edwards both depicts what is beloved about this magnificent creature and creates a film that is distinctly its own entity, one that brings Godzilla to gorgeous new life. The Easter Eggs and nods to previous versions and additional suitmation favorites will likely be appreciated by sharp-eyed aficionados. If Edwards’ installment serves as your introduction to the King of the Monsters, though, there’s plenty for you to enjoy as well.

Quint's review from AICN (about the only reviewer left there that I respect): http://www.aintitcool.com/node/67271

I thought this part was particularly interesting:
Quote:

I ended up talking with producer Thomas Tull and while I was thanking him for helping me out with the tickets a Japanese man came up and Tull immediately looked nervous. “So, what did you think?” The man answered that he and his colleagues were amazed with the movie and couldn't believe how perfectly Godzilla was captured. “This is the Godzilla from my childhood.” He said this with a hand over his heart, I swear to God. Tull looked taken aback, both relieved and amazed at the same time. After the man left, Tull leaned over to me and said, “He's the head of Toho."

I think its sort of an interesting test for modern audiences. We have all sort of become conditioned to expect non stop destruction and amazing special effects from start to finish.

For instance, If this were "Michael Bays Godzilla" there would be an action scene every 10 minutes.

Do we (myself including) still enjoy the slow reveal and teasing anymore? Like the older movies that didnt have the modern special effects.

Pacific Rim I actually thought the entire middle section didn't have much action. But it wasn't a slow reveal either. They basically had a big action scene up front with a full reveal.

I'm curious to see how an audience responds to a slow reveal. Will people accept that.....thinking that this movie will be a full on 2 hour monster bash?

Yea, alot of that was budget and special effects limitations of the time. Like Jaws for instance.

But sometimes limitations enhance creativity too.

Just Passin' By 05-13-2014 03:56 PM

My biggest issue from the trailers is the shape of his his snout. If that's the worst that comes out of this for me, I'll be very happy. And, since I'm a big fan of old movies, the slow reveal isn't going to be a problem for me. I've already started re-watching the whole series (I'm not watching Emmerich's atrocity, though. **** that).

Also, as someone who grew up with creature double feature on the weekends, I'm really hoping this is more Gojira and less Pacific Rim. From the early reviews, that seems to be the case. This may just have to be an Imax experience.

Snout definitely looks different- more of a jaw structure of a pitbull it looks like to me?

I really like the idea of the slow reveal. It makes it that much more epic, important, suspenseful, exciting, etc. when it finally happens.

Yes , but enough about the strip club, what do you think of "Godzilla"?

I don't know exactly, but it seems off. Maybe it's because it's more angular?

The big guy also looks like he's been hitting the Bon Bons.

It looks like his neck is fatter and his snout longer.

He looks like a cross between some type of lizard and a bear.

Here's a great article about the changes the Godzilla suits have gone through during the Toho years.

The neck and the snout is the biggest difference in this iteration of the big guy.
