Welp, just pre-ordered one on Amazon.

Gravedigger 06-10-2013 10:55 PM

I think people should give up on Backwards Compatibility, at least with Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft only allowed certain Xbox games to by played on the 360, Sony flip flopped on different versions of their PS3 consoles on which ones were backwards compatible. This "through emulation" backwards compatibility sounds better than Xbox's no compatibility, but I think it's going to be in the same light that PS3 was. The only company that seems to embrace backwards compatibility openly is Nintendo, and I fear that is because they need sales. But as soon as you say that your console is backwards compatible it immediately devalues your old console exponentially. Microsoft and Sony want to keep selling PS3 and 360 well after the cycle. Theres no use in a devalued old console once the new console has all the titles that gamers want.

If you're really wanting to bring your PS3 games along for the ride to PS4, there is always obtaining a digital copy on the 500GB PS4 HDD.

...of course, you can't sell it later on down the line....but that's the trade off I suppose.

Jim Jones 06-10-2013 11:20 PM

XBOX One just got PS3'd. Brutal, just brutal.

I was 360 all the way on the current gen, but they've lost me. I'm going back to the Playstation.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-10-2013 11:20 PM

I've never owned a PS. Don't have anything against them, but was just a user of the Xbox and the 360.

What has Microsoft done to garner any brand loyalty here?

If you were/are a Microsoft supporter, what would you say to convince someone to buy that console?

That doesn't work either because everything currently in PSN only works on the Cell Processor. The PS4 won't support any of that unless it is in their streaming services.

I'm a PS guy, so no matter what happened I'd still say PS is better than XBOX. The only difference know though, is that everyone else knows it too.

I'm a multiplayer guy, and mostly shooters. I'm curious to see what games come out for both consoles down the road. I have a 360 and I love it had it for 6 years. Big COD fan, Battlefield 4 looks sick along with the new GTA. TitanFall looks amazing too and it's definitely something I'll be looking into. The ps3 was never an option for me bc of their lack of online shooters. Everyone wants to complain about the price. But if its going to offer you 5+ years of entertainment, I think the extra 100 dollars would without a doubt be worth it. Sucks having to pony it up all at once, but if you're a frequent gamer you're going to get your money's worth. With all the extra money needed for Microsoft points, memberships, etc., I can see why it's a big turn off.

007 06-10-2013 11:35 PM

I wonder, since Sony seems to be charging for online multiplayer now, if that also means you have to have PS+ in order to watch netflix and other streaming services too?

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-10-2013 11:36 PM

The price point seems to be poor market research to me. However, why would you place so many restrictions on game usage and require constant monitoring through the internet?

Surely someone in Redmond had to have enough common sense to say, "Fellas, people are going to be right pissed off about this."

Microsoft's initial plan (I'm sure they'll call an audible at some point) is Earth-shatteringly stupid. It looks to me like they are telling a large portion of their consumers to **** themselves.

Exactly right. I wasn't going to really consider buying any new XBOX, but it really does amaze me how dumb these decisions are. That guy on youtube that plays Francis also does some fairly good reviews and discussions (when he not playing Francis). As you said, it pretty much comes to Microsoft telling people that are poor, don't want to play online, don't have access to fast internet, etc, to **** themselves.

DanBecky 06-10-2013 11:42 PM

Microsoft has always been about the $. But since they have over 70 million memberships, maybe they thought they could afford to lose some fans. Definitely not winning any over after their presentation

The problem is nobody in Redmond seems to have common sense right now.

Why think about the inconvenience of the consumer when we can just milk them out of more money with our absurd DRM system? This wasn't the publishers doing, as Microsoft brought the idea to them. If it were the other way around, there would certainly be DRM on the PS4.

Gravedigger 06-11-2013 12:19 AM

Heres the thing for me; if I had a decision, day one, or right after holiday season, which console I would buy, it'd be the PS4. I want to see how the hell this new Used Games and Installation Fee on others systems works out. I will admit that PS has always made games that are greater in tune with me. I love my Final Fantasies, my Uncharted, my God of War etc, and when comparing those franchises plus a few others to Gears of War, Halo, and Fable and some others from XBox, it's just not even a competition. I will say that playing on XBox Live is more fun and a better experience for multiplayer shooters, I get it, but playing on PC trumps the XBox not only because of mouse and keyboard but I'm saving $50 a month, I get the game a smidge cheaper, and I like to build my own computers and update them every few years. If you love XBox 360 then love the brand and have a ball, but personally with all the bad publicity that has fallen upon XBox, their restrictions, their higher price point, neccessity to have Kinect plugged in... how can you say that the PS4 with similar specs is so much worse? Buy what you're going to buy, but Sony knew that they lost last generation because they started out with a piss poor price point, so now to get a leg up with this generation, they're going to be the winners of the initial price point so they can cruise for a longer distance then they did with PS3.

You'll also be able to upgrade the PS4's hard drive yourself.

E: Also, only one account will need PS+. Every other account tied to the console will be able to play online without buying plus.

BryanBusby 06-11-2013 03:38 AM

I'd expect a price drop on the Wii U today.

With the basic systems being phased out, the $349 deluxe units will be the only thing left. There's no way they could justify an inferior console only being $50 less than the PS4, along with the fact that it has sold very poorly.

The new price will probably be $299, but they really should drop it down to at least $249. Some Mario games won't be enough to save them.

Honestly, I don't understand this. You obviously think I'm a Xbox fanboy of some sort which is about as correct as you saying a Gold membership is expensive. I've said from the beginning that I'm not rushing into buying a console and that I'm going to look at both the PS4 & One once everything is official before making a decision.

Sure, I lean more towards Xbox because I've put time into it and I'm comfortable with it. But, I was the same way with PS & PS2. Likely, I'll end up with a PS4.

Went through 3 Xbox consoles in 14 months. the final "4th" one, replaced new via warranty, was sold to a friend of mine.

Never going back. I'm sure they're fine now, but I was too burned on the deal to ever really seriously considering buying one again.

Not to mention there is talk of Microsoft under-clocking their system to avoid the same issue as before.

And this really pissed me off. I purchased the Metal Gear PS3 bundle and sacrificed HD space and other options because it was the last one I could find that played PS1/PS2/PS3 games.

Just because I've bought the new console doesn't mean I want to quit playing my old games. Honestly I doubt I've even purchased 15 ps3 games since buying the console. I still log hours on older RPG's because there isn't much out there that has that addictive factor for me.

I loved the game and online options of Resistance2 and Fallout3 ate my life for months. Outside of that there hasn't been much that fit my tastes.

Never going back. I'm sure they're fine now, but I was too burned on the deal to ever really seriously considering buying one again.

I can understand that. I had the same issues with PS2 which is likely what pushed me to Xbox. With 360, I bought a day one system and never had an issue with it - still use it. Bought a second one a year later, got RROD.

I can see how going through 2-3 consoles can sour you on it.

Yep, bought a launch-date 360 and it went to shit just a week or two after my warranty expired and I had to pay 50 bucks to get it fixed, they gave me a 90 day warranty after the repair and a few weeks after the 90 day warranty expired it broke again, another 50 bucks spent to get it fixed.... That happened twice more and after they raised the price to fix it to $100 I said **** this, I'm out. I never once got the RROD though, and I was hoping I'd get it so that my repair would be free.

I've had two PS3's since I gave up on XBOX, my first PS3 stopped reading discs after a couple years but I've had no problems with my second one.

And as a Sega fan (dreaming of the day they get back into the console market) I was disapoint. Do they make anything other than Sonic and NBA games anymore?...
