The G3 has an updated chip in it compared to the Note 3.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8169/the-lg-g3-review/3

Compare the G3 to the HTC One M8 that has a 400 mAh smaller battery, same processor, but 1080p.

The M8 blows it out of the water.

The Note 3 has a 3200 mAh, and G3 has a 3000. Plus, the Note 3 screen is .2" larger. Seems to me the Note 3 should have better battery life but it really does not.

Nah, it has virtually equal battery life with a less efficient processor.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize a higher resolution screen takes more power to run.

The G3 lags behind the S5 and M8 by 20% in battery life because it has a 1440p screen instead of a 1080p screen and you would never notice the difference between the two. 1440p is a useless technology on a screen so small.

Yeah, I do feel LG has overhyped the resolution.

I do love the phone, other than the fact that it's not mhl compatible. I'll need a Slimport for HDTV connectivity.

Anyone else have a smartwatch?

I have a friend in the technology business up here that gave me a free Samsung Gear 2 and a Pebble.

So far, I'm using the Gear 2, and it's a bit of a novelty at this point, but I totally see how it's usefulness and integration will be in the future. Already it does have some useful functionality and integration.

Much like circa 2006 and the mainstream adoption of the smartphone started taking off.

DaFace 08-17-2014 10:24 PM

Not yet, but I've got my eyes on the Motorola 360.

L.A. Chieffan 08-17-2014 11:26 PM

I have a Gear fit 2. I like it and people ask me about it all the time.

jd1020 08-17-2014 11:27 PM

I'm good with my regular $20 Casio.

I really don't see the purpose of the smartwatch and don't think it will ever take off. I don't need a $300 device to go on top of my $700 phone just so I don't have to reach in my pocket and see who texted me.

L.A. Chieffan 08-17-2014 11:36 PM

Mine also has built in pedometer, activity tracker for different things like hiking and biking, heart rate monitor, sleep monitor, timer, alarm clock, music player, can give me notifications for every app on my phone and has a beautiful screen that I can change the wallpaper with pictures from my gallery. Only $150. Pretty sweet

Will I be able to tell a HUGE difference between a HTC m8 and m7? I know the screen size difference. My previous phone has been a Galaxy S3 for the last 2 years.

The m7 is on sale at best buy for a buck. The m8 is 200 bucks.

Unless money is tight, I'm always in the boat of buying the latest when it comes to tech.

But beyond the screen size increase, the M8 has a better processor (801 vs 600), expandable storage, and the best gimmick of all with the same camera except with an added second camera that is just there to add 3D effects (basically useless beyond the "oh that's kind of cool" moment the first time you see it).

Actually surprised the M7 is even a buck at this point, it's soon to be 2 years old.

EDIT: Forgot to add that the M8 camera doesn't have OIS.

Another thing to think about is that the M7 is unlikely going to get Android L, which is suppose to be more efficient and easier on battery life and stuff.

I saw a guy with one of those the other day when I was playing cards. It looked bigger than I even thought when I played with it in the store. At some point, it's just too big to be a phone. And I think that is it. But he said he used it for phone, and hooked up keyboard to be his work computer as well, so I guess that makes sense.

It looks pretty cool. But, yeah, I don't know how useful it would actually be. Maybe it would give you a little more screen space though to navigate?

I was all ready to get the Galaxy Gear watch a year or so ago when it came out, then I thought about it, and then decided it was one of the stupidest things ever to spend $250 on.

And until they make the virtual reality sexual relations, like in Demolition Man movie, I'm not buying that, either.

Keep the screen size same or slightly larger but cut down on bezel. It looks like they actually made the bezel a little longer and wider but the screen is the same. It weighs a little more than the Note 3. No water/dust resistant technology like the S5 which seems odd and disappointing since an older phone already has it. Even though the processor and screen is more powerful they kept the size of the battery basically the same so that'll probably mean less battery time, we'll see.

Don't get me wrong it's probably going to be the best phone on the market for a while but for $700 or whatever I wish it had some of those other things.

Anyong Bluth 09-03-2014 05:11 PM

Well after a few years of holding off on getting a new phone, I am likely finally going to be moving to the Note4. It will ultimately be once I get a chance to tinker with it hands on.

I've been less than impressed with the updated Samsung phones over the past few years, but this seems like a decent enough step up in hardware, not that it's an epic step up from the 3, but I'd say it's got some gusto in the improvement overall.

L.A. Chieffan 09-03-2014 05:48 PM

Probably going to have to pay for the Z3 in full and it probably wont come with LTE support, at least for gsm carriers. Sony has pretty much removed themselves from the US market. T-Mobile might get it, but who the **** uses them?!?!?!!!!!!

Not in love with the back design compared to the old one, and I still don't understand wtf Google's problem is with more than 32gb of built in storage, but I dig the front speakers, not sure why anyone still puts speakers on the back. *cough* Samsung *cough*

Probably going to finally upgrade my soon to be 5 year old HTC Aria, that is now so passed being useful it's starting to voluntarily reboot itself, to this.

It's between this or the Nexus X for me. I really cant hold out much longer with my phone literally dying, so I'm hoping something about the Nexus X is confirmed in the next couple weeks like a release date and the actual size of the phone. If it's going to be the reported 5.9" behemoth then there's no ****ing way.

jiveturkey 09-05-2014 10:05 AM

My Galaxy Nexus is on it's last leg. If the Nexus X is obese I'll just pick up a Nexus 5 on the cheap. I'll take a serious look at the Moto's too.

I've thought about that too, picking up a Nexus 5 (they now offer a 64GB version) or even the LG G2. Both of those phones aren't too far off from todays flagships.

The one thing I'm worried about with the new Moto X is the battery life. They increased the screen size and resolution but only upped the battery by a measly 100 mAh??? That 801 and Android L better be doing work.

BWillie 09-05-2014 11:49 AM

So is there any difference between the Note 4 and the Edge? I know the beveled screen, but the specs and everything...are they virtually the same? The Note 4 is said to have like a 5.7 inch screen to the 5.6 inch Edge, big deal.

It looks like Google is replacing broken Nexus 5's if you purchased it through the Play Store.

http://slickdeals.net/f/7177944-goog...play-store?v=1

I bought the phone close to the release date and had to replace it because the power button juggles. The newer batch also had larger speakers.

I was recently having GPS issues and the where the phone was frequently losing the GPS signal while driving so I might send it in for a new one.

On the Slickdeals thread people were reporting that water damaged phones, broken screens were being replaced through this program.

Wife and I are trying to save money, so we just switched over to tmobile from verizon earlier this evening. I've been an iphone user for years and have been on iphone 5 the last year and a half. Decided to take a crack at android. I got the samsung avant, she got the galaxy light(again, we didn't splurge cuz we're on a budget and just wanted something that works). The Avant is actually a great phone so far for the price! Altogether over the next 24 months, we will be paying $13($9 for the avant, $4 for the galaxy light) a month just for the phones on top of the bill, so about $108 a month total when we were paying $160 for verizon. Overall very happy with our decision so far.
