So, you send Davis back out right?

I'm not really talking about this play, I just wanted to make it clear that there actually is something to lose, hypothetically, if you challenge in the 9th.

Ned will have some bullshit excuse because he is never wrong.

That is the job of the GM.

Don't think Ned doesn't have any say in that because he does.

someone needs to ask. Its fine for dumb fans and ignorant announcers to not know the rules, but I'd expect the manager to know. If Ned says that his video guy told him not to challenge, then OK, if its as close as you guys are saying, then maybe the Royals need to fire their video guy.

But he isn't the one that makes the decision. Sure, he has a say, but Dayton is the one with the final say on roster moves.

A lot of announcers screwed that all up to hell the first few weeks of the season, falsely thinking only umps could initiate challenges after the 6th.

What do these guys (managers) have to go on to make their decision? In the NFL, there are coaches upstairs with access to the TV replays. Head Coach is basically relying on them to tell him what to do. I don't know what the situation is for MLB managers.

Every team has hired a replay guy with all the video in a room, and their replay guy is just a phone call away.

The procedure for a close play is usually manager makes a long slow walk, meandering to the ump, taking his time, he looks back to his bench coach who is on the phone with the team's replay guy, and he gets the thumbs up or thumbs down on whether to challenge it.

Royals fans are pissed because Yost didn't go through that procedure, so we don't really know if he heard from his replay guy or not. If he went out, talked to the ump, and walked back, at least then we'd probably think the Royals replay guy probably said not to challenge, but we don't really know because Ned never left the dugout.

That OF totally thought that ball was gone. Look at how he turned and gave up on it, only to see it land short.

alnorth 05-06-2014 10:58 PM

Just judging by twitter, it seems like Esky was clearly safe. So, the Royals are probably hoping they score here and hold the lead to make this all moot.

OK, unless the Royals blow this lead, at best someone will half-heartedly ask about the 9th inning, not really get an answer, and the issue will be dropped there.

Which shouldn't be the case for this one. If GMDM wants to put quotes out there about holding people accountable, then the media should do their job. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't think we should fire Yost

Hopefully a few people in the Royals brass were alarmed enough about that 9th-inning no-challenge to fix this even if they don't have to answer for it.

This would be such an epic meltdown right now if the roles were reversed. Trying to steal second in that situation was epic-level stupid.

I swear, in the 9th (or extra) inning when the usual baserunning rules are sometimes upended for logical, strategy reasons that many fans understand, professional ballplayers sometimes just don't get it.
