And there is the younger girl that beat both of them in the US competition. She might be our second best all around women's gymnast.

'Hamas' Jenkins 08-07-2016 10:00 PM

Douglas finishes qualifying in 3rd overall, but doesn't get in b/c she's third in her country. That is a really stupid rule. The 21st-24th qualifiers from aren't going to contend for a medal.

Held getting emotional during the anthem was nice, too.

This is hilarious. By law, all large pools in Brazil must have lifeguards. So, there are a couple lifeguards carefully watching while the greatest swimmers in the world compete in the olympics.

I don't chime in much during real time, as I record all day and then burn through it all in about 4-5 hours a night, but I'm enjoying reading everyone's posts and thoughts so far. Great day of competition today. Ledecky is just a freak. The men's relay had me standing and cheering in my living room, and kudos to our kid in fencing who won our first medal there(men's individual)since '84. Almost had a hell of a gold in the ladies road race, only to fall out of the podium completely. Also fell short of a shot for a medal in ladies Rugby 7's.

Our women's gymnastics team is basically Alabama, at this point. Oh, and Alabama if they played a community college, at that. Bummer about Douglas, but she had her day and should still be in on a team gold.

Bronze in ladies trap shooting was cool. Not much to report on Equistrian so far, just dressage, which we suck at. Our men's indoor Vball team sucked(assuming they didn't pull a miracle, I ff'd through it when down 2 sets.

Their entire track team was banned (except for one athlete who trains only in the USA and we pretty much know is clean). Most of the world wanted the full delegation, all sports to be banned, but the IOC cowardly said banning their track athletes was punishment enough.

Ratings and the Internet have changed the Olympics.

It just doesn't resonate for me anymore.

It has been less gripping this year. But wrestling is yet to come, that will have me glued to whatever is broadcasting it. Will take PTO to ensure it's uninterrupted.

You can access a more pure form of the olympic broadcast if you only watch the online streams. I'll usually watch NBC in primetime, but the online streams have international commentators who do not come in with pro-USA jibber-jabber during the intros and just calmly and quietly call the action.

edit: to be clear, the international commentary is not anti-USA either. For swimming tonight, the broadcasters sounded australian, they were firmly with Lilly King and were happy when she beat the cheater.

NBC has shown multiple live sports on their multitude of channels for nearly a decade.

I've watched but I'm not nearly engaged as I was in 1976 or 1984 or 1988 or 1992 or even Atlanta 1996 (bombing).

1984 was the pinnacle for me. I was in high school and while the games were on all day, they were also on until 2am. I saw Evander, Sweet Pea, Meldrick and so many others.

1988 was a game changer with Louganis and Roy, as was 1994.

Since then, it's been "blah" for me.

alnorth 08-08-2016 09:40 PM

Oh God, since they quickly won in straight sets, they are forced to go to men's gymnastics. I'm out, I don't want to see this debacle.

Absolutely. The obscure events are great. Check out the USA women's field hockey team. After winning two games total in the last two Olympics, they have scored major upsets in their first two pool play games. Also, we have some kick ass rowing teams. Unfortunately, we're out in ping pong and individual fencing. Not looking real rosy in Eventing either but we have a guy with an outside metal shot. Tried to get into sailing but I had no clue what the **** was going on.

I'm sure the guy with all the gear shows up last after everyone else has boarded, opens up all the bins looking for space that's not there and moves people's bags in a futile attempt to cram the shit in before finally a flight attendant makes him trudge back up the aisle bonking his shit into people along the way before they make him check the shit plane side like he should have done in the first place.

This by a fair margin. If cans aren't your thing it is probably Aly Raisman who I think is legal. Some of the Eastern Eruopean gymansts (if they're legal) are a little longer and not so squatty and they bring the heat. Didn't catch any of their names.

There is some respectable eye candy this year all over. Kerri Jennings is still incredible. There was some American chick in the pool that would get all this D. Soccer and Rugby have some smokeshows sprinkled in. Really a good year for it.
