I love the Iranians' tears.

They are weeping because they have to return to that hellhole.

jd1020 06-25-2018 01:59 PM

Not sure why the announcers are making such a big deal about that hand ball call.

Arms extended away from his body and the ball hits him in the arm.

What in the world is the Russian goalie thinking?

Jumps away from the free kick, right as its being taken.

This whole play is bizarre. There's also a Russian defender plowing through 2 Uruguay players, creating the shooting lane.

Trying to cheat to the side of the wall got caught leaning thinking the shot was going over the wall. Plus the clearout by his defender opened up a lot more space for the shot.

The Russian player was trying to clear out the Uruguayan players. What happens a lot is the defending team will set the wall according to the keeper's instructions. Typically, the keeper will set the wall to completely cover one side of the goal so only an absolutely perfectly taken kick would be able to go up and over the wall and get back down into the goal. One or two of the attacking team will position themselves on the open side of the wall in an attempt to block the keeper's vision. They will wait until the kick is taken and move at the last instant so the keeper has even less reaction time. The Russian player was trying to move those players earlier so the keeper can see. That "shooting lane" actually benefits the keeper because he can see. This keeper just messed up on it though...the shot went to the side he was expecting. The keeper should always have that open side of the goal covered. I don't know why he took that little hop to the closed side of the goal.

Russia has enriched the world with literature, ballet, music, icons etc. It is not even close to the bottom.

No amount of literary works by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Gogol can save that current wretched cesspool.

Anybody see the story about COCAINE being found in WORLD CUP trophy replicas in Argentina?

Clyde Frog 06-26-2018 11:46 AM

I'm torn on who I want to win this ARG-NGA game. You want the best players playing late in the tourney but Nigeria is really fun to watch.

Also, the Nigeria warm ups and kits are best in tourney, hands down.

I feel bad for Nigeria, that handball was a 50/50 gift from the ref. Had the game been 2-1 for ARG at that point, I bet he awards NIG a PK. I say that because the handball deflection, in the box, deflected the ball away from an awaiting NIG player who would have had an easy goal.

On the flip side, I thought the PK they did award earlier in the game was very soft. I don't think 2 PKs for those 2 plays would be just.

Point made. But soccer has the same issue the NFL has with arbitrary calls, and selective "letting them play" times of the game.

Handball was the reason Nigeria got that nice shot in the box.

Wait, what did I miss. It came off the ARG's head, onto his arm (away from the NIG player who very well might have scored), and wasn't played by a NIG player.

The only shot NIG got (that went in) was a PK for having been raped in the box on a CK...

I'm confused. Perhaps since I'm working I missed something.

It's a tough comparison. Messi has superior skills. Ronaldo is a superior specimen.

Kind of like Lebron v Curry, except soccer equalizes particular traits more effectively and is more of a team sport.

I believe most of us are subject to a cognitive bias which makes us more likely to readily perceive "all time" greatness when said greatness is happening NOW.

While being cognizant of this fact, I still maintain that Messi is GOAT. He didn't revolutionize the game like, say, a Johan Cruyff, who, in my opinion, was GOAT before Messi. However, Messi's pure talent is probably the closest to transcendent we have witnessed in any sport, right? I think maybe Tiger at his peak or Roger Feder at his come close?

We have seen plenty of uber scoring machines like Ronaldo before. I don't think we have ever seen anything like Messi, though. He is so ****ing filthy with the ball around his feet, it's like watching a dolphin compete in swimming disciplines against a bunch of Michael Phelpses. It's just not fair.

Ronaldo is definitely more clutch for his country, though. :D

Really hoping for Germany 1-0 over Korea and a 1-0 wind for Sweden over Mexico. That would send Germany through as the winners of the group and Sweden through in second and Mexico would be out.

It won't happen, but.....

Shag 06-27-2018 08:17 AM

MEX/SWE off to a fast start! The announcers for the MX games are so much better than the other games.

As soon as I saw Ozil in the lineup again my confidence in Germany circled the drain. He was awful but really the entire German squad looked disinterested for all but 10-15 minutes the entire group stage.

Ozil doesnt deserve a spot on any national team. How do you bring a guy who is truly awful in 90% of any game he plays and couldn't care less about his performance to a World Cup again and again.

There might be someone I am missing, but Werner and Kroos were really the only German players looked like they cared. Boateng and Mueller were both pretty awful. Neuer did not play very well either and the list goes on.

Germany had so many excellent scoring opportunities in every game and rarely capitalized. Their defense against the counter was horrible against Mexico and S Korea and would have been the same against Sweden if they tried to score.

I dont think any of them cared.

Kroos played like shit too. It's easy to look at his goal against Sweden to end it and forget that the goal Sweden scored was because of a lazy ass pass by Kroos midfield that was intercepted.

All 3 games it was the same shit. They were just kicking the ball around as if they were up 1-0 playing against a superior team and just trying not to give up the equalizing goal.

All the possession in the world in every match and you can count on 1 hand the amount of actual goal scoring threats they created in any one of them. Their plan of attack was pathetic throughout.

How many of the 6 saves did the Korean keeper legitimately sweat over in this match? I can only think of one off the top of my head and that was Gomez's header that was struck well but ultimately right at him.

Had Sweden been given that penalty kick in their match after Boateng mauled the Swedish player, and could have easily been red carded right there, Germany would more than likely be leaving the World Cup with out a win when they controlled possession 70-30.

That's what stunned me. I didn't watch today's game. But the first two games, Germany absolutely dominated. They created scoring opportunities at will. It's just uncanny that they were so ineffective at scoring this tournament.
