Severance - 1 season. Sci fi (ish), interesting, stylized. Sort of like LOST (because there's some mystery around what the company does or its purpose) meets a Kubric film (for styling). Idea is there's a company where a certain floor of workers have been "severed" meaning while at work they have zero memory/knowledge of their outside life. Outside, they have zero memory/ knowledge of their time at work. Funny in places, but mostly dark. starts off mysterious but we were hooked by the third episode and immediately binged the rest.

Succession: Power drama. Amazing characters. Dark humor. Three seasons. Almost every person is despicable. Billionaire media mogul Family "eats itself" and many others in the process of determining who will run the business when the patriarch retires or dies.

Barry: Dark humor. a few seasons. (3 or 4 or 5?) Hitman Barry moves to LA to work but starts taking classes to become an actor.

The White Lotus: One season is its own storyline. Season 1 takes place in Hawaii at a 5 star hotel resort. Various character sets / storylines, basically a peek into the dysfunction of the lives of rich people. It's funny, kooky, dramatic. Really good.

Watch the trailers and pick one. Obviously White Lotus and Severance are fewer episodes, so easier to complete than Succession or Barry.

TLOU you can just start watching.

Outside of a couple "middling" early season 1 episodes, the show takes off like a rocket about 3/5ths through season 1, and never looks back. It's my favorite show of all time.

Interesting, I watched episode 1 today and found myself losing interest fast. Not sure if it’s worth investing any more into it but a lot of people here say it is.

Can't tell you much else other than stick with it. The 4 episodes or so where Logan is ill aren't the high points, but after that, it truly finds its footing.

KC Hawks 02-05-2023 08:17 PM

Was that Worlds of Fun I just saw in episode 4?

Edit: Maybe I should I watch the whole episode for that answer haha.

I shut ep 3 off at the Parks and Rec guy playing piano. I was super tired and was getting late and just haven't had the motivation to resume and may not.

A Salt Weapon 02-05-2023 09:35 PM

Damn episode 4 was amazing but feels like half as long as it should have been. I feel that we spent too long on ep 3 side plot and cut some off this one.

Easily my favorite episode yet. This episode is what the game/story was all about. Joel and Ellie's character development, and the real threat (people).

My daughter and I finished episode 3. Excellent episode.

I have a PS3 and the game sitting in a box. Brother and nephews gave it to me, never played it. Will it ruin the show if do?

notorious 02-06-2023 07:40 AM

I should also ask, will the show ruin the game?

Zebedee DuBois 02-06-2023 09:36 AM

I wouldn't expect fidelity between game and show, or between books and shows. They'll tell a similar story for sure, but they're being told by different authors/directors/etc.

Probably.
I’d rather the game ruin the show than vice versa though.
You can burn through the game in a weekend on rookie mode if you wanted. Or watch one of the condensed recaps however that would probably be the worst route.

I don't think either are going to ruin the other one for you. What I would do if I was in your shoes? Finish the show and then take your time with the game. I think if you tried to play it now....you'd rush through it.

This. The show makes me want to play the game again and probably will enhance the experience I think.

First episode where the bond between Joel and Ellie really started to feel more true to the game version. The shitty jokes and puns were ripped straight out of the game and I'm pretty sure even the book cover was made to look like the one from the games.

Stryker 02-06-2023 09:39 PM

How this series follows the game so well, yet deviates from it is INCREDIBLE! I am seriously loving this so far! :thumb: They are pulling this off very well so far!

I thought they were going to skip over the porn mag scene. The "Why are these pages stuck together?" line was great.

Pretty weird that after they went by Worlds of Fun they didn't head north on I-35, less populated route.. Why did they head south to downtown?? Tv land shit..

The Mario Kart Parody they did on SNL of this show is actually pretty funny. Especially considering it's SNL and all.

I really did appreciate the prepper surviving the genocide followed by creating the compound.
Some good, some bad.

I know nothing about the game or what story arcs were in it. So, I don't know what is true to the game and what has been inserted for this series.

I thought that this episode started out very interestingly. I like to see shows about how they deal with an apocalypse. That being said, I definitely could have done without the gay stuff, though. Had to skip through all of that. I really don't even care that it was two men who grew to love each other. Just don't need to see graphic stuff like that. :Lin: But, of course, Hollywood these days seems to like to insert that everywhere.

That won't keep me from watching, though. So far, it's a good show.

Sorry I'm so late to this, but I had to thrown in my $.02.

I love Succession a lot - it's so well done, from start to finish (or where it has left off so far).

But....

Barry is a jaw dropper. It's funny as hell, but Jesus, it takes turns that make your jaw drop to the floor. Quite like certain scenes/moments in Breaking Bad did for me.

You can't go wrong with either choice, but I'd say Barry is more impactful.

It was neat and all to see a deaf character for an episode, but they literally speed ran almost every single aspect that would ultimately piss off most deaf viewers for not representing them properly, instead framing a deaf person through a hearing person's perspective for pity points.

A Salt Weapon 02-11-2023 12:11 AM

I do enjoy the twist they put on the show, even having played the game you know the direction the characters are going but you’re not sure exactly which path they take to get there. I enjoyed the final scene a lot.

Pepe Silvia 02-11-2023 12:21 AM

Well one things for sure, it would definitely take an apocalypse for me to eat Chef Boyardee Ravioli and enjoy it.

backinblack 02-11-2023 12:46 AM

Joel needs to know by now, after all he's been through, to be checking people's bodies after those types of encounters for bites or really any other type of open wound. Just plain foolish to not be doing that at this point.

Sassy Squatch 02-11-2023 12:57 AM

That whole street section was incredibly well done, from the sniper and on. Much more intense than the game equivalent when the infected get involved

KC_Connection 02-11-2023 02:37 AM

Never played the game, but this show has been quite good (particularly E3 and tonight's E5). There are some major parallels in the narrative with one of my favorite movies, Children of Men. It's sort of a mix of that with TWD.

Iconic 02-11-2023 10:32 AM

E3 was beautiful television... dare i say i even shed a tear

E4 was a pretty harsh fall back to reality. found i honestly struggled to finish it

hoping E5 lives up to the hype you guys are giving it.

The ****ing bloater was terrifying.

Sassy Squatch 02-11-2023 01:39 PM

Nice homage to the game death when a bloater grabs you.

Sassy Squatch 02-11-2023 01:41 PM

Oh, and for those of you with a PS5, the remake in on sale this week. 25% off. Still pretty pricey for a game unless you haven't played it yet, but it's legit remade from the ground up with improvements to the AI so the gameplay actually changed too.

Pogue 02-11-2023 01:51 PM

Probably the second best episode since the premiere.

Great storytelling and entertainment, sort of a lost art these days in Hollywood. I hope this spawns a new genre of video games turning into shows/movies. There are a lot of great games with great stories.
