Years ago when Bristol still had a guardrail gate on the outside wall, Michael Waltrip hit it so hard that there was literally nothing left of the car. Waltrip walked away. Now look at Dale Earnhardt's crash. When he hit the wall the car stayed intact. Which caused him to have more force exerted on his body. Pre-Hans days. His head so violently smashed forward that he had a cracked skull where is brain was trying to escape his head.

Austin Dillon hits the crash fence and goes airborne following the end of the race at Daytona |
In reference to tk's question earlier, I think that fence did exactly what it was designed to do, and recent renovations at Daytona placed the stands (and people) a little farther away from the track. NASCAR earned its reputation as general shitbags, but they got this one right. One fan hospitalized and apparently OK.
Someone with engineering knowledge is gonna need to explain to me the deceleration force involved when a 3400lb car goes from 190mph to 0 that suddenly. I've never seen a car just stop like that. And dude walked away from it. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/n6BjzMgTubU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
whew thought we were going to have to retire 3 again for awhile there.

Wow, it looks like I missed one of the bigger big ones!
Welp, 4:30am was too early to be expected to hang all night. |
