HA!

4 years/$16 million plus the fact that we dropped Jay's $7 million off the books.

Holy shit, this is a robbery.

Just sign Hewyard plus a SP(if not Leake, Buerhle) and call it an offseason.

Friggen love this move.

A) It gets Jon Jay gone.

B) Gyorko is 2 seasons removed from being seen as the next Utley. Now his ceiling should be lowered quite a bit due to his horrific sophomore slump but he did experience a slight bounceback last year. If you get him out of that hitter's graveyard, he could easily go back to being a 20 HR hitter w/ the ability to play 3b/2b well. If they were really looking at Zobrist, Gyorko can give them what Zobrist would have with greater upside, less $$ and trades some OBP for some power (which we need more than the OBP anyway).

Talking about this move with a buddy of mine in STL. Point A is the highlight of the deal for him...he absolutely HATES Jon Jay. Even more than he hated Kozma.

I just think you're point B is kinda insane. Gyorko as the next Utley?? He had good pop as a rookie, but has never had that kind of pedigree. Doesn't get on base, k's a ton, doesn't walk much, basically all power guy. I don't see any Utley similarity at all. And he isn't exactly a defensive wiz either. Big body and kinda slow.

I like the fact you guys got some $$ on the contract in the deal, but you basically got a replacement level UTIL guy in my opinion with small upside.

Well, conflicting reports that the pads are sending 17 mil back in the deal or no?

Pretty sure you're getting him 4/$26.

They sent $7M with Gyorko and took on Jay's last year.

The only way that deal makes sense to me is if their plan is to make Gyorko a starter and hoping he re-establishes himself as that 25+ HR hitter by either trading Wong or moving Carpenter, but if they are moving Carpenter then I don't see them making a play for Heyward.

They sent $9M with Gyorko and took on Jay's last year.

Now I'm seeing $7.5, which makes FAR more sense.

So it becomes 4/$26 plus they take $7 million in Jay so the net outlay is 4/$19. Still a great move considering what Zobrist would've cost.

O.city 12-08-2015 10:38 AM

He can get plenty of at bats at 3rd, 2nd, hell, he could probably play some 1st in a pinch.

Basically what they were wanting zobrist to be I'd imagine.

I'm a little sad to see jay go. I know he wasn't loved, but he played hard and was a good cardinal

He's a $5 million/yr insurance policy and Swiss Army knife who would form a great platoon partner with Wong.

Gyorko's biggest problem is his poor plate discipline against RH pitching. Well Wong's biggest problem is the same against lefties. Combine those two guys and you'll be getting an .800 OPS and 20+ HRs from 2b at a damn low cost.

And that's the worst case scenario outcome, IMO. At worst, he forms an ideal platoon partner for Kolten Wong. When that's your worst case scenario and your only risk is $20 million spread over 4 seasons (in a market where Ryan Madson just got $25 million over 3), it's a great move.

Via Bob Nightengale the Padres are sending the cardinals 17 mil. Not sure why it won't let me share it but that's what he said.......now just tweeted Ken's tweet so I'm sorry I was wrong. My bad

He was a shitty Cardinal. The only time the guy would work was when he had someone trying to steal his job or when he was pushing towards arb. His couldn't self-start worth a damn. Every time he was given the starting job and/or got guaranteed money, he crapped the bed.

I won't miss that guy at all.

I guess Gyorko even played a little SS for SD last year. That's surprising to me but I'm glad to see he could at least play it in a pinch. It would sure help our bench construction if he can be the primary backup at SS.

He was a part of the 2011 world series and had some big hits. I won't miss him, but he did his part.

With Bourjos and jay gone, it seems the CF job is Heyward's or grichuk

Pretty solid addition for the Cards. Get a super utility guy and can give the team options through out the year. Should keep Peralta rested more. Give Carpenter a blow and Wong a shot in the ass.

With Jay gone, it makes me think they're pretty confident about signing Heyward, OTOH they could just feel really good about kid Randall
