They seem to be consistently around or under $100, yet gas prices are going through the roof.

Also, there was a time when crude was in the $150 range, and gas prices were similar to what they are now.

No, they aren't, at least not with regard to the national average.

Crude hit $147 in July of 2008. Gasoline hit $4.11 at that time. We are at $3.67 now. So, as you can see, no, they aren't similar at all.

Who is "we"? Since the only person who buys gas for my car is me, that's actually an "I." And "I" don't really give a shit what the national average is, douche. I don't buy my gas in bumble**** Mississippi, so if it's selling down there for $2.00, that really has no bearing on my life. What matters to me is that it's $4.20 right now in my area, and even higher at other places locally.

I think we've had this discussion before. The national average is the only relevant figure. I understand that you don't like that, but that doesn't change the fact that local spot prices are simply part of the overall picture.

Oh, and the price in Chicago one year ago was $4.16.

That's what I heard, but I was curious. It seems a bit ****ed to me that they decide to do some maintenance on their facilities, and then outages hit the rest of them. Oil is one of the shadiest businesses on the planet.

The best time for them to do maintenance is during the switch from winter to summer blends. If you've ever performed maintenance on any equipment, you know that sometimes things happen during the maintenance that you weren't expecting, which can cause delays in getting the equipment up and running again.

This will probably end up with the refineries losing more money than they would if the refineries had no issues, by the way. The retailers are the ones raising prices, not the refineries.

Possibly, yes. As has been discussed, the price that you pay at the pump is the retailers' replacement price. They've already paid for what is in their tanks. They're basically looking at the present and what they think will happen with the refiners, and price accordingly. Sometimes they guess right and sometimes they guess wrong. It's not unusual for a retailer to actually sell gasoline for less than they paid for it. In the end, yes, it works out to about 5 to 10 cents per gallon profit. They make their real profit on the other stuff in the store.

Not to mention that it's an all or nothing deal when it comes to enough routes and timeliness. Having lived in Europe where it's a way of life, you can get anywhere, pretty quickly, very cost effectively. When I just entertained the idea here in KC, I found the assholes running the place wouldn't even bother to help me figure out the best way from Lee's Summit and back each day. Fail! Then, when I figured it out myself, I'd have to have a clock-punching 9-5 job for it to be effective. Well, no!

So, they need to quit looking at public transportation as a charity ride for certain cross-sections of KC, and just get it in everywhere. Slow growth just won't work.

And last, having little from the airport to the market/downtown/Crown/Plaza are killing the area for many conferences. Try those on for size first, and not buses.....real light-rail cars like DC has.

Short of that, **** them, I'll drive and have my corporate conferences elsewhere.

Refinery Issues, Summer Blend Send Gas Prices Soaring

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/06/...rices-soaring/

CHICAGO (CBS) – Chicago area gas prices jumped 25 cents at some stations in one day this week, thanks to a double-whammy of refinery problems and the switchover to summer blend gasoline.

WBBM Newsradio’s John Cody reports, with a gallon of regular unleaded now going for an average of $4.70 per gallon, Chicago’s gas prices are even higher than Hawaii’s.

Gas Buddy analyst Patrick DeHaan said BP and ExxonMobil have said maintenance being completed at Whiting and Joliet has restricted local gas supplies, just as refineries switch to the more expensive summer blends, and driving demand picks up for the holiday season.

“Unfortunately, it may get worse before it gets better, but in the next two weeks or so, we should see some relief, starting that is, in the next two weeks,” he said.

DeHaan said several stations raised their prices by a full quarter per gallon between opening and closing on Wednesday.

Daniel Vargas fills his vintage Camaro with premium. That grade carries a premium price, even in northwest Indiana, where gas is normally cheaper.

A gallon of premium was going for $4.89 at one Merrillville, Ind. gas staion.

“Northwest Indiana is not the place to get cheap gas. In fact, there’s no cheap gas and there hasn’t been for quite some time,” DeHaan says. “Tighter gasoline supply combined with these refinery outages creates a very tight situation for supply. And what happens? Econ 101 says prices go way up.”

DAMN YOU

Seriously, though, it's nuts here. I noticed the prices going up over the weekend - it was $4.19 a gallon pretty much everywhere - I found a station that was selling gas for $3.87 and filled up - when I drove by later in the day they had raised their prices to match everybody else. Last time I looked, they'd gone up another 20 cents. And we're generally much cheaper than the city - it's gotta be getting close to $5.00 in Chicago.

Was there a nuclear war in the Middle East that I didn't hear about on the news?
