Where would you put Texas on that list?

It's not like there is anything wrong with being in the freaking top 10 of CFB programs.

With following Nebraska even gets in there... now if they could just do something about the play on the field.

Texas is by far the biggest state in the country. It is twice as big as any of the home states of the schools you listed, except for Florida (which has Florida State and Miami splitting football allegiances). It has more "T-shirt" fans than any school in the country.

And it consistently ranks top 5-10 in actual gameday attendance.

Texas is easily top five in total fanbase (even though it's impossible to completely quantify complete fanbase sizes). It has one of the highest alumni bases of any university. It sits in a huge state, where football is king, and most casual fans are UT fans.

Texas also has 141 universities whereas the other states you listed have around 50-70.

The original argument is ND bigger than UT? In fanbase I say yes, otherwise I agree...impossible to quantify.

ND probably has more of a national presence than Texas, but a lot of that is based in part on success 50+ years ago. ND's performance that last 10 years is nothing more than mediocre, especially considering its status as an "elite" program.

BYU reaches out to more than Texas and ND combined...

I have a feeling with their TV network, Satellite network and Millions upon Millions of Mormons starting to jump on, they are going to be a media monster going forward...

Texas has by far the richest AD in the country as far as public universities are concerned (both profit and donations). The only other one that comes close is tOSU and the rest are on a whole different [lower] level.

I was surprised to see that they averaged over 60,000 fans per game last year despite playing the likes of UNLV, San Diego State, and Wyoming.

I think they have huge potential if they joined a BCS conference. Hell, they won the national championship in 1984 and have been damn good recently - they would be an upgrade over A&M.

I wouldn't argue that ND has a bigger national fanbase than UT. But UT is easily top 5 in terms of overall fanbase. They're right there, even just looking at football attendance numbers... and the number of casual fans in Texas who love UT is staggering.

Unless you/your family are grads or students at a different school, you're a UT football fan. And many of the lesser schools (North Texas, Rice, SMU, etc) fans would claim UT as "their" college football school.

Texas is likely #2. Its possible they're #1, but there is no chance that they are below #3 in terms of national following.
