I don't know why that Radio guy would even bring Price name up in a trade. Why would the Ray's trade a true ACE under team control till 2016 ?

Cost.

And Rany isn't a "radio guy." He's one of the most respected voices in the sabermetric community.

Stop with this cost crap.

2013 Contract Status: 1st Year Arb Eligible (Super 2), 1 yr/$4.35M

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...riceda01.shtml

2014 That will jump to about 8m

Because he qualifies for arbitration before next season. He currently makes $4.35 million dollars. Estimates are that it will jump to $10 million/season in arbitration, and that's about 1/6 of the Rays' payroll.

His second arb year, it likely goes to $13/14 million.

And his third year, he's likely at $16 million.

A lot of baseball people are questioning whether they can carry that salary while improving enough in other areas to get back to the World Series.

They need cheap, controllable offense (at SS or 1B, preferably) to get back there. They have quite a bit of cheap pitching and can save a lot of money on Price without a precipitous drop-off in his replacement.

Price will be floated on the trade market. That thought is pretty accepted in baseball circles right now.

@DKnobler Do you think they would trade Price?

DKnobler ‏@DKnobler
@ChiefsOrioles12 Doubtful, depends on what they were offered.

DKnobler ‏@DKnobler
@ChiefsOrioles12 Easy to say they wouldn't, but what if Angels offered them Trout (obviously not going to happen, but what if?)

Danny Knobler? YOu trust him more than Olney?

someone mentioned this earlier, but Buster Olney is positive the Rays will move Price in the offseason for financial reasons.

If anyone has ESPN Insider and wants to post cliffs of that... help Chiefs and Os out.

@DKnobler Royal fans think this would be enough for Price, Hosmer, Ventura and Adam what do you think

DKnobler ‏@DKnobler
@ChiefsOrioles12 can't see that

Plus why would the Royals do this trade ? Give up players for 3 years of Price cause the royals will never give a player 25m a year and that's what price will get in 2016.

No shit especially since it was the national guys who started the talk.

No one here really gives a shit about Danny Knobler. Not sure why you think he's the gospel...

But beyond that, the key part in that is:
Hosmer + (something that doesn't start with Wil Myers or Jake Odorizzi).

If the price on Price gets driven up, the Royals can sweeten the pot.

Hosmer+Adam+Sugar Ray Marimon starting price.

can easily be sweetened to:

Hosmer + Ventura + Adam + Christian Colon (hey, he's not playing SS for the Royals any time soon, and the Rays need help at SS)

and so on. I don't know that they'd get to the point where they trade Bubba Starling as part of the package.

As for "why Price when it's only 3 years?"

Simple. Because it puts the Royals in position to contend for the AL Central division title each of those three years. They'd be giving up two years of control of Eric Hosmer for that, but they have no other way to really acquire an ace, and they have a surplus of young hitting talent.

It bridges the gap with the young pitchers and gives the Royals a chance to bring up John Lamb and Kyle Zimmer and bring back Danny Duffy without that guy having the pressure of being "the ace."

By the time Price is a FA, the Royals internal pitching options will either be in place, or the Royals will be entering a rebuild stage.

And the Royals would probably be willing to talk to him re: an extension that gives him more money up front at the expense of 1-2 FA years; something around $16 million a year gives him $10 million more over the next three years than he'd otherwise likely get, even if it does cost him about the same amount on the back end of it.

If it isn't on Twitter then it ain't true.

DUh guys!

Saul Good 09-25-2012 04:20 PM

I don't know if I'd trade Perez for anyone short if Trout.
