The idea is to not have your pitcher hitting. And what happened? pitcher batting with the bases loaded in extra innings.

I still don't understand how he ended up having to also switch out first base, though.

Sweet!

Miami announcers are calling it the worse loss of the year in a year of bad losses.

Frazod 06-25-2012 09:21 PM

Helluva comeback. Although Motte did his best to **** it up.

The other ones were obvious losses. They were up 6-0 going into the 7th inning. I have to say that this was one ugly win. Still, it's a win.

That's what I was confused on. Oh well, they'll definitely ask him about it in the post game interview.

Umpire made a mistake, not Matheny. Ump recorded it wrong.

So STL gave their lineup to the ump, who then told it to FL incorrectly? Teams don't give their lineups to the umps and to each other?

Here is how the double switch works. Let's say you have an inning where the pitcher is coming up to bat. You can just do a pinch hitter and have a new pitcher come in the next inning, or you can double switch. Let's say your second baseman bats 8th. What you can do is have the guy pinch hitting for the pitcher play second base, thus switching spots in the batting order with the pitcher, so the pitcher will bat 8th (later on in the game) and the second baseman will bat 9th for the remainder of the game.

Eh, he got victimez a bit on the pitch to Sanchez.

Walking Ruggiano was pretty unacceptable, but he threw a great pitch that got Sanchez to hit a slow roller to SS...it just managed to sneak by. It happens.

Motte threw a great cutter to Sanchez that he didn't get the call on. If he throws that pitch with any regularity at all, he'll be just fine. And to be honest, he's thrown it quite a bit more since Butler.

I'll probably never be comfortable with him protecting a 1-run lead (his velocity turns flare singles into ringing doubles; it's the nature of power pitching), but he's the least of our concerns in that bullpen right now.

That was the type of game they had been finding ways to lose rather than win here recently. hopefully a good sign of getting back to the early season performances.
