Question, though - how many players would you expect to replace on your roster each year?

7 rookies, maybe keep 5-6 on average teams with decent talent. Throwing back maybe another 5-8 vets who were on one-year deals, retiring, hitting FA or being replaced by rookies with upside. I'd say around 10-15 per year. So about 20-25% of the roster. Towards the lower spectrum on teams with young talent and more on teams that hit an age wall and have had fire sales for draft picks or such.

At first not many, but 2 or 3yrs down the road I think it will b a lot more

I'm not trying to criticize this is a fabulous game. I'm just thinking about strategy and what this may look like after several seasons.

Thats not normal - A team keeps their best player normally - for at least 2 contracts...

Each year you can resign 10 players. So if you signed 10 players in year one, 10 in year two, and 10 in year three... you're not losing all your players. It's not that complicated to figure out.

I'm not saying those numbers are correct.. I'm just throwing them out there as an example. You want to have a little turnover to the teams of valuables so that the Free Agency period actually means something. It's more fun of a game when you have 10 guys you wanna keep, but can only re-sign 6 of them... it forces decisions, and again it gives the free agency pool meaning and excitement.

Just gotta find a balance.

Well...that's what this league would do as well. It's going to be awfully tough to build a true dynasty, but at the same time, a team can be smart, fly under the radar and rebuild a team in just a season or two.

My annoyance remains in the inability to sign role players to deals that are more than a year long. If I want to sign a nice swing tackle for 3 years, I'm going to have to pay him like my starting guard. Well that's just bizarre.

But it feeds turnover, feeds FA depth and feeds increased competition every single season that extends beyond merely the NFL draft. It turns the league from a full blown 'dynasty' league into more of a keeper league where you can note a handful of guys as keepers and the rest of the team is essentially re-draft every season.

It's not the worst thing in the world, but I'd sure like to see some tweeking to account for guys that make smart decisions on young players and/or guys pre-breakout. There really should be a mechanism for allowing a team to keep that guy on the roster without having to go bid among the masses.

But this promotes movement, it promotes continuous planning from year to year. Not one guy piling up on all the talent intially in the game and then sitting pat winning the league for 5 years. It makes everyone actually work and be attentive, the most active owners that do their homework and plan correctly will do very well every year...

Absolutely, I recognize that - but I still wish there was a way to get someone below market for more than a year.

My example is Amari Spievey. Spievey is a serious concussion case right now and someone you could never take much of a risk on. However, if the Lions went to him and offered him a discounted 3 year deal, he'd take it in a heartbeat.

I'd love to do the same; I think Spievey is a damn talented football player and I'd like to give him a 3 year deal so I can hold him through this 2012 season (lost to a concussion) and then get him for another couple of years at a reasonable rate. If I want to do that, I'll essentially have to pay him for 3 years at a productive veteran rate when A) I know I'll only get 2 out of him and B) I have no idea how he'll recover.

It's just really difficult to take fliers on breakout candidates and hope to get them on a discount contract for a couple of years. A smart manager should be rewarded for being able to go locate those guys and should get a little more of a bump for it than a single undervalued year.

how many guys does everyone have on a 7 year contract?

If we made some changes to the system now based on feedback (no guarantees, just saying), would it screw up everyone's contracts? We're just figuring out if we should make any changes now or wait until the 2013 season.

I can only speak for myself but would welcome some changes

Maybe a rookie wage scale
A one time resigning per player or a certain # per yr
Once in FA it's a great system

All rookies should be on 3 year contracts dependent on where they were drafted, IMO.

Ya, i've already finalized mine. But it's not big deal. Can be redone!

I think I know what I want to do, but I haven't signed the contracts yet.
