Option 3 is that he doesn't have a team he adamantly refuses to go to, and they just pick 12 random teams they think might suck every year. If one of those teams are doing better than expected, they can waive it.

Eh. I think that's just standard. The agent just picks the worst 12 teams or teams that have no shot at a pennant and makes that the no trade list. I don't think they sit down and literally cross out teams one by one.

Some do. Cliff Lee apparently has a list of big market teams on his list. Every player is different.

For someone like Cliff Lee, it is a negotiating tactic. He's 37 years old. If he has a bad season its moot, but if he's having a good year and his team is out of it, the bad teams wont trade for him anyway, and if a large market comes calling, he can negotiate for a longer-term deal that takes him to 40. (not this season, but say in 2015 or 2016 when his current deal is almost over)

Complete hypothetical right now. But as of right now, if the Royals had to play the wild card game. Who would you rather have on the mound, Shields on 4 days rest, or Santana on 3 days rest? Don't know why this popped in my head, just did.
