With Heat season tickets sold out, team fires season ticket sales staff

Because the Miami Heat has no season tickets left so sell, the team decided to let their sales staff go.
BY DOUGLAS HANKS
dhanks@MiamiHerald.com

With the arrival of Lebron James, the Miami Heat rapidly sold out all their season tickets. That turned out to be bad news for the ticket-sales staff, which was fired Friday.

In a statement, the Heat confirmed the dismissals Friday afternoon, saying that with an ``exhausted'' inventory of season-tickets ``we no longer require a season ticket sales team to sell tickets.''

Stephen Weber, vice president of sales, delivered the news to about 30 ticket sales people Friday morning, according to one of the staffers who asked not to be named because he is seeking another job in sports.

Even when James was merely rumored to be heading for the Heat, the team saw an explosion in season ticket sales. The staffer said he and his colleagues were making cold calls to prospective customers and taking deposits for a waiting list that now has more than 6,000 names on it. The dismissals reflect the new Heat position in basketball: it can sell tickets without really trying.

``They let us go because there was really nothing left to do anymore,'' the fired staffer said.

Ayeh Ashong, partner at the Tickets of America brokerage in Miami, said demand for Heat tickets is sky-high, with opening game seats selling for about $250 apiece. ``They're probably the hottest tickets in the country,'' he said.

The Heat did not release details of the dismissals, except to say the sales force ``ebbs and flows'' with the supply of tickets.

``While the decision to release part of our sales force was a difficult one, we greatly appreciate their contributions to the company,'' the statement continued. ``We have also hired a placement service to assist those individuals find new employment.

``Should any season tickets become available, they will be handled through our season ticket deposit program. We thank those employees for their time with the company and wish them success in their future endeavors.''

James takes out newspaper ad thanking fans in Ohio hometown of Akron; no mention of Cleveland

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — LeBron James is showing appreciation to his Ohio hometown fans with a full-page newspaper ad as he leaves to play basketball in Miami.

James thanks Akron residents for their love and support in the ad in Tuesday's Akron Beacon Journal. He calls the city his home and the "central focus" of his life and says he will always come back.

There's no mention of nearby Cleveland, where he played seven seasons for the Cavaliers. Last month he announced his decision to move on to the Miami Heat, leaving some Cavs fans feeling burned.

The ad features photos of James in Akron, including at his annual charity bike-a-thon. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, and James plans to appear.

Source: Heat's home opener Oct. 29 vs. Magic; opener Oct. 26 in Boston
By Ira Winderman South Florida Sun Sentinel

The first look at the new-look Miami Heat will come at a distance.

Despite the offseason additions of LeBron James and Chris Bosh, as well as the re-signing of Dwyane Wade, the Heat, according to a preliminary schedule obtained by the Sun Sentinel, will not play its 2010-11 home opener until Friday Oct. 29 at AmericanAirlines Arena -- three days after it opens its season Tuesday Oct. 26 at TD Garden against the Boston Celtics.

The first South Florida exposure during the regular season for the roster that Pat Riley overhauled last month will come on Oct. 29, against the Orlando Magic.

Instead, after the Heat opens the regular season where it ended the 2010 NBA playoffs, in Boston against the Celtics, the preliminary schedule obtained by the Sun Sentinel shows the Heat next playing a road game on Wednesday Oct. 27 against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Only then, after taking Thursday Oct. 28 off, will the Heat host its 2010-11 regular-season home opener against former Heat coach Stan Van Gundy, All-Star center Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic.

The NBA is scheduled to announce opening-week and other featured 2010-11 regular-season games during a 7 p.m. Tuesday show on the NBA TV cable network.

However, the Sun Sentinel has learned that the Heat will also play Christmas Day at Staples Center against the Los Angeles Lakers, one of two games this coming season against the two-time defending NBA champions.

The league Tuesday also will announce its Jan. 17 schedule of games for Martin Luther King Day, although the Heat was not scheduled, on the preliminary schedule obtained by the Sun Sentinel, to play that day.

The entire 2010-11 NBA schedule is scheduled to be released next Tuesday, August 10. This is the first time the league has released its schedule over a series of days.

The opener in Boston will deliver Wade and James to the spot where their 2009-10 seasons ended. Wade and the Heat were eliminated by the Celtics in the fifth game of the opening round of the playoffs at TD Garden, with James and his Cleveland Cavaliers bounced in the sixth game of the Eastern Conference semifinals at TD Garden.

Boston will enter that season opener shorthanded, with center Kendrick Perkins sidelined by offseason knee surgery. The irony is that former Miami center Jermaine O'Neal, who was signed away from the Heat in the offseason as a free agent, will replace Perkins in Boston's lineup.

Several games from the 2010-11 schedule have been leaked by various media outlets, with the Heat's road games in New York reportedly on Dec. 17 and Jan. 27. Also, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that one of the Heat's two visits to Cleveland will be March 29.

Z ran an ad in Akron? No proof, but the timing could have something to do with: "The ad features photos of James in Akron, including at his annual charity bike-a-thon. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, and James plans to appear."

...but keep on hating.

I'm sure you watched a television show somewhere that said "you can't build a case on circumstantial evidence"....

Well that's a blatant falsehood. In fact, statistically speaking, circumstantial evidence tends to be far more reliable.

The circumstantial evidence here is more than enough to get this submitted to a jury.

I'll let The Planet supply a verdict.

I'm pretty sure I know how it will come out.

Who do you think's nailed more random road beef - Dwayne Wade or Kobe Bryant? Kobe drilled the wrong crazy cocktail waitress.

Though as best I can tell, I haven't seen any divorce papers from Vanessa Bryant claiming that Kobe gave her Herpes...
