Underwood leaving MU basketball team
Sophomore forward John Underwood is leaving the Missouri basketball program to be closer to family members in Phoenix, Ariz., while his brother copes with a serious illness.
The school announced his decision in a press release Saturday afternoon.
“Our hearts are with John and his family,” Coach Mike Anderson said in a statement. “We are saddened to see John leave the program. He was really developing and we were seeing great signs from him every single practice. With that being said, basketball often takes a backseat and it needed to in this situation. We want him to know he will always have a family here at Mizzou and we will do whatever we can to support him in life and in basketball. He will be an outstanding addition for a program back home.”
Underwood appeared in four of the Tigers’ first 10 games and played a total of 10 minutes, scoring a total of five points and grabbing one rebound. He totaled nine points and 25 rebounds in 14 games during his freshman season.
“Mizzou was an outstanding experience for John and I can’t thank Coach Anderson and Coach Watkins enough for how they helped him grow over these past two years,” Underwood’s father, John Sr., said in a statement. “I wish the circumstances would have been different, but John wanted to be closer to home and closer to his brother during these difficult times.”
Underwood’s departure leaves Missouri with only four healthy forwards on its roster. Freshman Kadeem Green is still working his way back to full strength after surgery last January to repair a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. He has not played this season, and Anderson has said he could redshirt. The Tigers were also hoping to have the services of star recruit Tony Mitchell, but he has yet to be ruled eligible by the NCAA.
