Alex Smith touted as the right fit for Andy Reid’s system

As West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith prepares to visit the Chiefs with hope that the team holding the first overall pick is “legitimately interested” in him, the local newspaper has made the case in extensive fashion for Alex Smith being the right fit for new coach Andy Reid’s system.

Extensively quoting Trent Dilfer and Herm Edwards of ESPN, Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star explains that Alex Smith is the answer, reasoning that the trade for the first overall pick in the 2005 draft means that the Chiefs “obviously felt more strongly” about Alex Smith than Geno Smith.

So why are the Chiefs reportedly “fascinated” with Geno Smith if Alex Smith is the answer? The preference for Alex Smith makes any flirtation with Geno Smith an obvious effort to entice someone else to trade up to the top spot in the draft, allowing the Chiefs to slide back a few spots, perhaps getting the same guy they would have taken at No. 1 and definitely acquiring other picks that can help the Chiefs improve quickly.

Improving quickly provides the Chiefs the biggest reason to not take Geno Smith. With this year’s second-round pick and next year’s third-round (and possibly second-round) selection already devoted to the Alex Smith trade, the Chiefs need to use this year’s first-round pick on a player who will help them get better now, not later.

In today’s NFL, coaches rarely have the luxury to wait until later to make a team better

You think they would have Geno throw to Bowe and then not draft him?

Im sure Reid and Dorsey could make that happen. Have Bowe sitting next to Geno talking

Tommorow there better be pics. People better be there welcoming Geno to KC..

This is the perfect time to take a future QB with the 1st pick. First year in the regime. Let Alex Smith try and win with this aging core of talented players. Let Geno learn and maybe start next year. Alex has NOT received any extension. So he has what 2 years left on his contract?

"We can't take Aaron Rodgers. We need help on defense NOW. Drafting a future franchise QB should not even be a consideration when your starter is a 35-year old with reconstructed knees. Does Vermeil want to get himself fired?"

Next year if we want another OT we can take one. This year get your QB

O.city 03-31-2013 09:01 PM

And they couldn't take a QB they liked better next year?

I wonder if there all on the same plane. If so I hope B Albert is praising him to coach Reid so he wont have to hear the Joeckel crap.

They have mandatory stuff tomorrow, I'm sure they're already here.

Jesus. Who cares what Herm Edwards thinks? He's the very antithesis of "NFL Success".

There mere fact that Herm thinks A Smith is the answer suggests to me that there's no chance that it's true

Nope because if Alex plays well than we will be drafting in the bottom half. If Alex does bad he will be finding a new job and we would take a qb.
