I don't think Lance Armstrong is as naturally fast or naturally strong as either one of the guys I mentioned, I would bet the large majority of people would agree with me.

When you say best Athlete I assume you mean best overall and I would say Jim Thorpe.

jidar1 08-03-2005 09:53 AM

The only way you don't think it's Michael Jordan, is if you have absolutely no interest in basketball. I don't watch BBall anymore but when I did it was just obvious. In his prime the man was head and shoulders above everyone else, there will probably never be another player as dominant as Jordan was in any sport. Some people will mention Wilt, but wilt played when basketball was mostly white people. heh.
Honorable nods to Gretzky, Armstrong and Ali though.

On a football BB? Absolutely.

Like you said, it's a highly subjective question. As an endurance athlete and cyclist, I tend to view the athletic world through the criteria that make up that sport and discipline.

If the primary basis for determining who was/is the world's greatest athlete is the ability to dominate in various different sports, then obviously Armstrong is not at the top.

If MJ was the best athlete, why was he such a failure at baseball?

Just a few are, that's why they are considered some of the greatest athletes of all-time.

Looks like it's a Thorpe , hard to argue against it.

Cept the modern day kiddies who is pimping ( I'm a bogey golfing basball playa that is good at basketball ) MJ.

washed up old bastards.

You're right though. I'll rescind my vote and instead say it's Steve Bartman.
He singlehandedly brought the Cubs to their knees.

I'm fairly sure that Dave Winfield was the same height as MJ.
