It didn’t take long for the Detroit Lions’ new head coach, Jim Schwartz, to begin reaching out to assistant coaching candidates.

Schwartz asked for and received permission to interview Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, who worked with him on the Tennessee Titans’ staff from 2001 to 2003.

Cunningham’s job security in Kansas City is tenuous at best, and the fact that he was one of the first coaches that Schwartz contacted is a sign of how much he is wanted in Detroit. One league source said that Cunningham is expected to be hired in Detroit.

Cunningham could wind up being Schwartz’s defensive coordinator with the Lions, working under him in the same way he did for three seasons when he was the Titans’ linebackers coach and Schwartz was the defensive coordinator.

If it’s the end of Cunningham’s career in Kansas City, the curtain will fall on a man who had an attachment to the city. Cunningham spent 11 years with the Chiefs, including two in which he was the head coach in 1999 and 2000.

Good for you guys.

I don't think he's got the reputation of being a great coach that he had when he left Oakland even after winning a SB with TB. I think people saw him as a person able to coach an intact team but not one able to build one or keep one intact.

I wonder if Pioli is keeping Herm for one more year, so he doesn't waste Clark's money, then gets Cower next year.

If all these coaches are leaving, there is absolutely NO chance Herm comes back. What coaches are going to want to coach under a one year contract?

Wow, fired the head coach AND GM after a 9-7 season.

Imagine if Carl had been fired after the 5-year plan didn't work.

This week keeps getting better. Here is hoping Herm is gone by Monday

I can't stress enough of how bad of an idea this is.

If you have a coach you don't want, you don't keep him. Nobody seems to talk much about the fact that Herm's players seem to either stay the same or regress under his coaching. IMO the longer he's around the more damage it could only do to these young players.

I'll ROFL

Bruce Allen would have been a nice pick up. IMO.

I can't believe winning coaches are losing their jobs and yet Herm is still in KC. The Chiefs are going to be a laughing stock next season if they repeat their success of this season. Here they had a chance to dump their coach and pick up a quality coach and held on to a loser?

Dave Lane 01-16-2009 06:21 PM

And Herm still has a job????

Braincase 01-16-2009 06:25 PM

Gruden tripped over Griese's dog.
ROFL

Wow.

How long before a "Hire Gruden" thread is started?

I'd want him on as a coordinator, but not as a HC.

That's a hell of a promotion. From DB coach to Head Coach.

Herm got that kind of transition. Didn't he?
