I went there in July 2 years ago for a vacation. I know there is a trade off of no ice storms but you get the summer humidity. No tornados but hurricane threats instead.

Sarasota is close by and is kinda like Overland Park moved to Florida. might consider it. A bit of a drive each day probably 30 miles or so.D

People can fish off the Sunshine Skyway. The Skyway connects St. Pete to Bradenton/Sarasota.

There are 3 bridges that connect Clearwater/St. Pete to Tampa: The Courtney Campbell Causeway, The Howard Frankland (I-275), and The Gandy Bridge. You can pull off to the side and fish off of both the Gandy and Courtney Campbell.

All of those have beautiful scenery around them.

Tampa freaking rules, I grew up here and dont plan on moving. I must say I never realized how many planteers lived near me, wish I would have known sooner so I could meet everyone.

I just spoke to my Dad and it was the Gandy bridge that we fished when I visited.

The Sunshine Skyway is a freaking scary to me. And the stories about the boat sinking and all those people eaten by sharks - wow!

I live just north of Tampa in Spring Hill. If you job is on McDill, your commute is going to be hell, considdering that most nice areas are a good distance away and Tampa traffic SUCKS. They have been trying to clean up the area and have made great strides, but there are still pretty bad areas around the base.
The upside is of course that there are year around outdoor activitys all around the state. If you have $100,000 to spend on housing, you can get a fairly new 3/2/2 home. I hope that helps some, and welcome to florida.

Only problem with moving to FL is your speech is subject to trend toward hick after a few years and you will be asked to surrender 50 IQ points at the border.

*full disclosure: my siser lives in Jacksonville and I visit Ft. Meyers/Miami/Jville 2-3 times a year, love it there.

Has the market crashed that bad there?

FlaChief58 04-14-2010 12:50 PM

The unemployment rate in my county is 22%. highest in the state, maybe the country. There are alot of unemployed / underemployed in the area. The housing market is shit and income levels are low (as compared to nationally). My house is worth 1/2 what it was 3 years ago. Alot of people got in over there heads and are now homeless. So to answer your question, we got hit pretty hard.

I do agree about the rednecks. Over in Stuart (North of West Palm) it is mostly rednecks, plus all they do is drink and sing karaoke.... thank god I decided not to move there.

I dunno, that sounds kinda cool, as long as they can assure you're not in an area where you're gonna get killed. I've never had a job where I was sent anywhere on the company dime, so I'd welcome it as something different.

BigRedChief 05-06-2010 12:43 PM

In the running for a different job down there now. Been through 3 interviews and a technical one. Got one final interview next week, probably.

BigRedChief 05-26-2010 10:11 PM

Expecting a formal job offer tommorrow or Friday. Any last mintue input from the Planet about the area?

Sfeihc 05-26-2010 10:50 PM

Take the job. Your pocket book and quality of life will improve.
