I think you're going to get rolled. But I'll try and help you out here. First off, do your homework. Know what the car you want is worth, and what it's going for everywhere around you. I'd even check out Ebay auto auctions.

2nd make sure you already know what you want before you walk in anywhere, because they'll get you off your car and into something else that you know nothing about if you're not paying attention.

You should line your financing up before you walk into a dealership. Have a check in hand that you just need to fill out the amount to purchase and be firm. Decide what you're not willing to pay more than, and start off below that number. Considerably below that number if it's reasonable.

Finally, DON'T GET THE ****ING CAR HOTS. Don't get yourself stuck on one vehicle to the point that you forget there are literally thousands of others that are just like it. It's your money, you're in control. Don't be one of the thousands of people that forget that fact during the buying process. Don't be a pushover.

Good luck dude. And you should definitely buy privately if you can find what you want. The negotiation process is much easier. Chances are someone wants out of the payment you're trying to get into.

lol I'm not going to get rolled. I'm such a cheap ass it would be hard, Carl Peterson style. Thanks man!

I just graduated from college about a year ago and my new job I've had for about a year has given me some good money. I came across a 2010 Toyota 4runner that has 5,000 miles on it for like $30,000. I'm gonna get them down obviously, but is this a good deal from the start? I wonder how much I can get them down. I could get a new car for that much dough that will be some of my ammunition. I'm looking for either a Toyota Highlander, 4runner. All my family has Toyota's as well as my fiance. I love them. Now I want one lol. Thoughts?

hugs and kisses

Oh yeah, I know that. Never buy based on monthly payment. I've already had a lot of salesman ask me what I'm wanting to pay monthly, I just say I want a good deal and I keep it at that. So many people buy based on monthly payments it's insane.

Private party sales are great if you can find what you want. But people who buy Toyotas generally buy them to keep them for a long time, there's just not that many late model ones available from private parties.

You realize you didn't fix that at all, right? "Toyotas" is correct, as he was indicating plurality, not possession.

It should also be "fiancée." This is because the noun is female (and French).

Why?

Because it's an "SUV" that can handle that snow down there. It gets good gas mileage, has a sporty removable top, and you can pick one up for about eight hundred bucks.

What the hell is the difference anyway? I googled pics of both of them and they look like different versions of pretty much the same thing.

IMO, they don't really look the same. Highlanders look like a taller Camry.

In doing research, the Highlander drives more like a car, the AWD is good in rain, some snow, good gas mileage, good family vehicle, drives like a car, etc. The 4Runner is more for snow, off-roading, camping, the gas mileage isn't as good, but if you don't have a long commute you're fine, drives like a truck. The Highlander has less space inside, the 4Runner has more leg space. I'm gonna test drive them both to see.
