Smith is unlikely to be affordable. By most accounts the Chiefs have approached him about an extension and the talks went nowhere. Byron Maxwell's contract is largely a bullshit contract full of fake numbers (similar to Ron Parkers) but even his absurd 6/$63 boils down to 2/$22 million after his roster bonus, signing bonus and guaranteed 2016 base is added up. He'll get cut/restructured in 2017 but he'll still have gotten $22 million in years 1 and 2.

So the 'real' value of the deal is still around $10 million in AAV and Smith should be able to demand that pretty easily.

The Chiefs just won't have that kind of money to spend. Granted, they've already worked $7.25 million into the cap for this season, but they have increases due to guys like Houston and Maclin next season that will swallow that up.

I'd love to keep him. He's appears to be a great teammate and an outstanding energy guy on the field (you need to be at the stadium to see that). He's a big part of the D's success. I just don't think it's realistic.

Gaines is going to handle his just fine this year. I fully expect a breakout performance this year. Also, hopefully this means Smith comes back and has an all-pro type season for the 13-14 games he plays in. Let's collectively hold our breath that Peters and Co. can hold it down for a couple of weeks. I'm not too worried about with our front 7 stacked the way it is. With or without Smith, I believe we go 2-1 in our first 3.

Gains added some bulk during the off season not sure how much.

Gaines, however, added that the extra bulk will probably be more helpful when defending the pick plays and screens that have become more popular than ever.

“(It will help) just getting off blocks and stuff,” Gaines said. “A lot of teams are going to fast screens, switchblade-type plays, so weight always helps you when you’re trying to disengage from a blocker.”

I'd love to keep Smith on an affordable three year deal, with something like $30 million in total value but I think he'll find more guaranteed money on the open market.

Fortunately, Dorsey has been drafting players while Emmitt Thomas has been working to develop them and while it will suck to lose him, the blow to the secondary would be far greater without Peters, Gaines and the others.

That said, this suspension is ludicrous. It's almost as if Goodell knows he's going to face the NFLPA with every suspension and therefore unleashes a stupid amount of punishment.

Smith should get one game, no more, no less.

Here's my hope for that Denver game...

Denver will be starting a rookie LT (Ty Sambrillo) and a journeyman at RT in Ryan Harris (at best) ...lost Ryan Clady, Julius Thomas (and his drafted replacement Heuerman), Manny Ramirez and Orlando Franklin

They will need to do a lot to make sure they protect Manning from getting hit a lot so early in the year and with the OL taking major steps back in ability, they're gonna need to utilize the scheme to do so.

That means lots of quick hitter passes, misdirection runs and play action. If Sutton prepares his guys effectively for those 3 things, I can see us having a good game against them defensively.

3 guys we need to slow down....CJ Anderson, Emmanuel Sanders and Demarius Thomas.

If that means we bracket Thomas AND Sanders on the outside and press at the line all night...I'm game. Do that in coverage and put pressure on their OL to block and we should be able to limit their offense enough to put out offense in a position to win.

We have the best secondary coaching in the NFL with Emmit Thomas and Al Harris. Peters will be ready to roll. Only question is who will play the nickel for those 3 games.

Smith is among our best players. Dipshit Clay spent an entire offseason disparaging the guy so suddenly the narrative started that he just isn't very good. He was no worse than a top 10 NFL corner last season and an argument can be made that he was better than that.

I think people spent so much energy talking the guy down prior to last season that they're disregarding just how important he was. He was a great player last year and if we're going to do real damage this year, he'll need to be great again. Going into a contract year, I see no reason he wouldn't be and his loss will hurt.

We've got the talent and depth to develop this year. We would be fine without Smith.

It's not like we're letting Brandon Carr walk away and replacing him with some random asshole from the Raiders in free agency next year. We've been stocking our secondary with good talent for the past three years now.

We should let Sean Smith sign with somebody else after this year and use his money on another guy.

My guess would be Nelson, though Fleming played well enough last year that Nelson will have to flat out take the job away from him.

Reid hasn't really been eager to get the rookies on the field in the defensive backfield; he tends to work them in slowly. It wouldn't surprise me to see Fleming start with the role and Nelson get more snaps throughout the season.

They could also put Abdullah there and have Branch play more of a conventional SS role, as they've done in the past.

Depends on how the year plays out. We should have around 30m in space and a bunch of guys to sign or replace, so it depends on who earns extensions.
