I'm not in the kinow enough to make any claim that it was spot on, but we do have this from a while back:

Quote:

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is rumored to have had less than favorable test screenings, with many viewers displeased by the ending. One of the endings that was said to be screened is a passing of the torch to Waller-Bridge's character Helena, setting her up as the new adventurer to carry on the franchise. Mangold has since denied the replacement rumors, pushing the idea that passing the torch is not even on the table for the film. However, if Williams is correct about a new ending being filmed, it could mean that Mangold and his team are shooting the new finale in response to the test screenings, indicating there may be some validity when it comes to passing the torch. The new ending could be to erase their earlier intentions, providing a more satisfactory finale for fans of the franchise and ultimately making their claims about not passing the torch true.

I 100% believe the original ending was a "pass the torch by making the original male hero pathetic compared to his flawless female successor" ending, because that same strategy has been used multiple times recently. The most obvious example being Rey replacing Luke Skywalker.

BBC review makes this sound fire:

“I’m not sure how many fans want to see Indiana Jones as a broken, helpless old man who cowers in the corner while his patronizing goddaughter takes the lead, but that’s what we’re given, and it’s as bleak as it sounds,” the BBC wrote, branding it a “gloomy and depressing” final act.

New rumors suggest that they'll sell Lucasfilm back to George due to billions lost from shutting down Star Wars cruises and very little cashflow coming from Disney World.

Lucas was always weird, but early on his weird ideas were tempered by others, primarily Gary Kurtz. Later on, when he became obscenely rich and all powerful, well, that's when you started to see things go to hell. Depending on who you believe, Lucas either whacked Kurtz after Empire or Kurtz just threw up his hands and said enough. I assume the former is probably the truth.

The last movie he oversaw that was worth a shit was ROTJ, and even with that you had the stupid teddy bears killing storm troopers, which was a horrible harbinger of things to come. I'll never forget the lost, hopeless look on producer Rick McCallum's face while he was watching outtakes from Phantom Menace, silently and powerlessly listening to Lucas drone on about how cool all his bad decisions were. Poor bastard looked like he wanted to cry.

The massive awfulness of the final trilogy doesn't excuse the somewhat less awfulness of I-III.

He's got nothing left to save, even if he had the desire to try:
  1. Harrison Ford is too old for more Indiana Jones.
  2. Disney's all but killed Star Wars, and Lucas got that murder started with the prequels.
  3. Howard the Duck's not going to do it.
  4. Willow is, blessedly, dead and buried.

Frazod 06-08-2023 01:29 PM

Disney started off killing Star Wars, but they've been more hit than miss overall. Sure, VII-IX were absolutely horrible, but Rogue One and Solo were great/good, and the various series have been decent/good/great.

While I'm sure it pains Darth Mickey, he has been forced to give us all better non-woke material of late.

Mandalorian kind of stumbled this past season, but overall it's been very entertaining. Andor was fantastic. Book of Boba Fett was great when it wasn't dealing with Boba Fett. And I look forward to whatever they're going to do with Ahsoka.

Kennedy has clearly had her fangs pulled. The new stuff is good.

And I don't really give a **** what the numbers say. I'm enjoying it now.

Quote:

Crystal Skull didn’t look or feel like an Indiana Jones picture, as Janusz Kamiński, who lensed the movie couldn’t recreate cinematographer Douglas Slocombe’s color palette of rich scarlet and butterscotch yellows.

Here, Mangold and cinematographer Phedon Papamichael nail the look. Dial of Destiny more closely resembles the aesthetic of the first three films than Crystal Skull did in terms of color and jet-setting vistas.

If the sets in Crystal Skull looked like sound stages, Dial of Destiny seems to have shot on location in Morocco, Germany, Sicily, and the like. The look and feel gives the movie a higher degree of verisimilitude and lets the audience invest in a deeper level of realism.

18 of the last 30 reviews are positive. That score is only going to get better.

The audience is going to love it.

Looks like most of the positive reviews are coming from people who weren't yet born when The Last Crusade was released. "Modern audiences" as the Critical Drinker would say.

Because of certain realities involving possible repercussions and the like, Mouse House movies tend to get overrated, not underrated, when the reviews don't match the product. But you do you, and time will tell the tale.

That guy's review is awesome.

"Every part of DoD is EASILY better than Crystal Skull."

"Ford does not deliver the dry, sleepwalking performance of Crystal Skull."

"Banger score."

"Action scenes nail the feel of the originals."

"Unpredictable."

"Doesn't put a stain on his legacy."

"Effective action, humor and emotion."

"Cannes reviews were wrong."

AdolfOliverBush 06-15-2023 11:44 AM

Wow, "Better than Crystal Skull" and "Doesn't put a stain on his legacy" are ringing endorsements. Lol

He seems like the type of guy who would enjoy watching a Mary Sue take over for Indy.

Watch the video. It's a solid movie IJ fans are going to love.

You can't re-invent the wheel in a franchise's 5th iteration.

He also confirmed that DOESN'T happen.

A quick note regarding leaks: I’m sure some of them are true. I haven’t read leaks in a while, as I said - I generally avoid them.

The ones I refer to in this video have been circulating for quite a while and were completely untrue. I’m not here challenging anyone who got leaked info that may have been accurate, especially more recent info.

I was just noting that a lot of the early stuff that I’ve seen and heard people claim for several months will be in the movie is absolutely not accurate.

#IndianaJones AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY delighted me. I remain a devout LAST CRUSADE girl, but this one is fun and crazy with nonstop action and some genuine surprises and a neat story. Do you like Indiana Jones? You’ll like this one.— Kate Erbland (@katerbland) June 8, 2023

I really dug #IndianaJones and the Dial of Destiny! A far better and more impactful finale than Crystal Skull. Harrison Ford still effortlessly embodies this character. Takes some wild swings some will likely hate, but I did not.— Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) June 8, 2023

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny made me feel like I was 9 years old again. Just a fun, nostalgic, action packed blast. As good as the first 3? God no. A film that feels wholly in the language of those with some whole new twists? Hell yes. pic.twitter.com/puYbnmFRF8— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) June 8, 2023

Okay so I just saw INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY and I had a GREAT time. The plot is in-****ing-sane and I was into all of it. I just spent two hours laughing and clapping.— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) June 8, 2023

Mike Ryan is a big chiefs fan and I think from KC. I generally like what he has liked. Hope that's the case here. He keeps saying the plot is audacious but he was into it.

Quote:

a deeply committed Ford here gets a chance to wash the bad taste of Crystal Skull out of everyone's mouths, and he hasn't lost a step since 2008. In fact, he weirdly seems to have gained one, perhaps because the screenwriters and Mangold have devised action sequences credible for Ford's advanced age rather than ones that constantly beggar belief.
Quote:

Not to put to fine a point on it, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (as screened at San Francisco's magnificent Metreon IMAX theater) gave this critic one of the most satisfying moviegoing experiences of his life—or as Helena describes it, "A final triumph...Indiana Jones, back in the saddle."

Mangold's film burnishes the Indiana Jones legacy by crafting a fulfilling and moving finale for the character, with an ending that will give true fans the chills.

Indy's latest and last magical mystery tour only provides fan service by being a great Indiana Jones movie, and I won't knock it for that (callbacks are few and organic).

Even with Lucas and Spielberg stepping down to executive producer status, this movie truly, madly, deeply understands the character of Indiana Jones and the choices he'd make.

Don't let anyone—film critic or otherwise—tell you this is anything less than a great Indiana Jones movie. Congratulations, Disney. I can't wait to get on this ride again.

Hammock Parties 06-16-2023 05:09 PM

Quote:

For starters, the other major extended action sequences feature more practical effects and locations while also appearing more elaborately conceived, such as a chase segment through a parade and protesters that culminates with Indiana Jones amusingly riding a horse down a subway tunnel, thrillingly avoiding trains while crossing between tracks.

Then there is the menacing Mads Mikkelsen playing a villain who does get the kill the occasional character, setting the stage for some danger and urgency to be felt.
Quote:

it also climaxes in a genuinely bonkers 45 minutes taking the story and action to pleasantly preposterous heights. Not only that, but the filmmakers also reach an emotionally moving conclusion in touch with the story’s central themes.

Cheater5 06-17-2023 07:23 AM

This will be forgotten schlop in under 60 days, buried in the queue next to ‘The Librarian’ franchise of milquetoast adventure movies. Its’ cinematic tombstone will have one word; Irrelevant, which is arguably worse than Crystal Skull’s which reads— Unnecessary.

Lucasfilm’s dignity is in the freaking gutter.

JohnnyV13 06-17-2023 10:45 AM

I had this sinking feeling of impending doom when I found out Phoebe Waller Bridge had a big role in the movie. I haven't forgiven her for voicing that horrid fembot in Solo, and can't imagine any movie starring her that doesn't suck.

Kathleen Kennedy must fail and Disney's summer movies have been underperforming because of their woke BS.

Hammock Parties 06-19-2023 08:36 PM

Quote:

You can feel the director’s love for the source material in his gung-ho screenplay, co-written with Edge of Tomorrow siblings Jez and John-Henry Butterworth and Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp. There’s definitely a touch of Logan to this hangdog tale of a hero at the end of his journey, thankfully less nihilistic here.

Phedon Papamichael’s workaday cinematography, much crisper in Nebraska, isn’t quite up to the technical mastery of Spielberg’s expertly staged shots, but Dial of Destiny is still big and beautiful, right down to the inevitable tomb of doom sets that feel at one with the originals and a finale that’s right out there in the very best way.

If the audience at Sydney Film Festival’s closing night gala are anything to go by, applauding with gusto in the opening gambit, then there’s still plenty of love buried deep in the hearts of fans from way back, and sometimes nostalgia is well-earned and worth digging up. I’m still da da da dah, dah dah dah-ing to John Williams’ magnificently rousing score and cannot wait to see it again. So speed dial your tickets.

So now that John Williams and Harrison Ford both have confirmed the ending was reshot I wonder if Mangold will come out and publicly apologize for his bold faced lying and throwing Williams under the bus as some old man that doesn't know what he's talking about or is he just going to sit idle.
