Shit, Kansas hasn't won against a current conference member since early October...of 2009.

That stretch is going to hit four calendar years unless you beat Tech in the conference opener. Keep talking shit, though.

Iowa Western C.C. O-Lineman Mike Smithburg picks KU football

By Matt Tait

Make it six junior-college commitments in the past four days for the Kansas University football program, which, late Wednesday night, picked up its third pledge in 24 hours when Mike Smithburg, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive lineman from Iowa Western Community College, orally committed to Kansas.

Smithburg, who earlier Wednesday received an NJCAA honorable mention All-American nod, chose the Jayhawks over a dozen other offers from schools ranging from Akron and Florida Atlantic to Memphis, Illinois and South Florida.

He became the fourth offensive lineman in the current class and the second O-Line commitment of the day.

Early Wednesday morning, news broke of Navarro Junior College offensive tackle Zach Fondal picking the Jayhawks, and, late Tuesday night, highly coveted defensive tackle Marquel Combs announced that he had chosen Kansas, as well.

Stay tuned for more on Smithburg. For now, here’s an updated look at the current class:

Kellen Ash: 6-3, 194-pound linebacker from Parkway South High in Missouri. A three-star prospect, who committed to KU last April.

Joey Bloomfield: 6-6, 305-pound offensive tackle from Ballard High in Louisville, Ky., who chose KU over offers from Air Force, Colorado, Houston, Kansas State, San Diego State and Wyoming.

Andrew Bolton: 6-3, 280-pound defensive end from Hinds C.C. in Raymond, Miss. Clocked at 4.8 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Bolton also had offers from Iowa, LSU and Mississippi State.

Marquel Combs: 6-5, 305-pound defensive tackle from Pierce Community College in Woodland Hills, Calif. This four-star impact player had 50 offers and chose Kansas over Kansas State late Tuesday night.

Montell Cozart: 6-2, 180-pound quarterback from Bishop Miege High in Kansas City. Played high school football under current KU offensive line coach Tim Grunhard.

Jordan Darling: 6-4, 226-pound quarterback from Shawnee Mission East High in Kansas City. Dominated summer camps and picked the Jayhawks over Kansas State.

Samson Faifili: 5-11, 240-pound linebacker from American River C.C. in Sacramento, Calif., committed to Kansas in mid-November, choosing KU over Hawaii, Iowa State, Nevada and Oregon State.

Zach Fondal: 6-5, 295-pound offensive tackle from Navarro Junior College in California. Canceled trips to Arkansas and Texas Tech and committed to KU.

Ngalu Fusimalohi: 6-3, 300-pound offensive guard from City College of San Francisco. Known as a mauler, Fusimalohi’s offer list closely resembled Faifili’s.

Marcus Jenkins-Moore: 6-3, 210-pound linebacker from Pierce C.C. in Woodland Hills, Calif., who describes his game as “relentless” and chose KU over offers from a dozen other BCS-conference schools including K-State, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Ben Johnson: 6-5, 230-pound tight end from Basehor-Linwood High near Kansas City, was one of the first players in the class to commit.

Isaiah Johnson: 6-1, 210-pound safety from Iowa Western C.C. Helped lead IWCC to a juco national title while leading the team with eight interceptions. Was named an NJCAA honorable mention All-American on Wednesday.

Tedarian Johnson: 6-3, 285-pound defensive tackle and juco teammate of Bolton. Chose Kansas over offers from Iowa State, Memphis, Mississippi State and Texas Tech.

Dexter McDonald: 6-2, 203-pound cornerback and former KU player who recommitted to the Jayhawks this fall after spending the year at Butler County C.C.

Trevor Pardula: 6-5, 210-pound punter and kickoff specialist who picked the Jayhawks over hometown San Jose State.

Cassius Sendish: 6-2, 185-pound cornerback from Arizona Western C.C. A natural leader and hard hitter who chose KU over Big 12 schools Iowa State and K-State, among others.

Colin Spencer: 5-10, 179-pound athlete from Woodrow Wilson High in Dallas. Played cornerback, wide receiver and quarterback in high school. May graduate early and enroll at KU in time for spring football.

Mark Thomas: 6-2, 210-pound wide receiver from Nassau C.C. in New York. Solid, physical wideout chose KU over UConn and Marshall.

Nope, but never talk reason to a Methzou fan. There is always a greater conspiracy out there to get them over. Rogue Kansas fans "masking IPs", Orange Bowl committees "being paid under the table", Texas Longhorns "screwing everyone over", Kansas basketball constantly "cheating", and of course, the NCAA Selection committee "actually scheduling Norfolk State round 1!"

It's always a conspiracy to them, and always will be.

It seems like current football staff is better at recruiting anyway ... hopefull that translates to the field.

Tyler Patmon is leaving. That's a big loss. He was probably the best returning player on D wasn't he? Anyone know what happened there?

Lzen 12-14-2012 06:26 PM

Interesting that Patmon is leaving. According to his twitter, it was not by choice. My guess is that he saw the writing on the wall. Coach probably told him his playing time next year would be much less.

Add WR Ish Hyman.

I wonder if his nickname is "Buster"?

It's almost impossible to defend Big 12 offenses anyway, what's the point? You have to score more points offensively. That was the big problem with KU this year, we didn't score. Our defense was much improved (impossible not to be) but the offense actually got a tad worse. That's on Weis. Hopefully Heaps changes that. You can't score 20/game in this conference and win any games.

HolyHandgernade 12-15-2012 01:01 PM

We have the DE, Martin, in this weekend. If we can get him and St John to KU, an already outstanding haul would be a certifiable home run. I've never seen this type of buzz around KU football recruiting before. Well done by the coaching staff. The majority of these players will enroll in the Spring and be ready for the Spring Game as well as a full off season of conditioning with Holsopple. If Heaps pans out, I don't think a bowl season is out of the question.

A big reason the offense struggled was the poor QB play. I'm sure Wies knows he made a mistake on Crist. And the freshman was not ready. I see the offense being much improved next season. That being said the upper class men on the offensive line leaving may be a problem. Hopefully not too much.

30th is still shit. 30th is a 7 and 5 team in the Boise potato bowl.

Who am I kidding that would be nice

But most team rankings I see have them about fifty

That's 7-5 ish if the entire roster was comprised of classes averaging 30th. In truth, the team is going to sink or swim based on how well your QB turns out.

Ah, so you're the infamous "wickedson" i've been reading about? Apparently I am your Sith apprentice. Or I am you, one of the two. I can't tell.

Anyway, the recruiting pitch should always be easy for bad teams: "If you can't play here, where can you?" That's what Weis tells people and it's true. I don't understand why some top notch players go to KU basketball when they won't play much (if at all). What is the point? Go to Nebraska or Tech and play a lot.

The flip side of that argument is that they want to win.

But yeah, KU basketball has had it's share of guys leaving after a year because they realized they were not going to get the playing time they wanted.

Kansas Jayhawks: The Hottest Team In College Football Recruiting?

2 mins ago by Rick Stavig

Charles LeClaire- USA TODAY Sports

The case could easily be made that the hottest team in College Football Recruiting for the month of December is…the Kansas Jayhawks.
Really? Kansas? Yes, really. Kansas.

No, the Jayhawks didn’t experience the kind of success they’d hoped for this past season, going a paltry 1-11 in Charlie Weis‘ first season in Lawrence. But Weis is doing his best to make up for it on the recruiting front.

Kansas now has 23 verbal commits in the 2013 class, 10 of which chose the Jayhawks in December. What’s been the key to his success? The junior college ranks.

Bill Snyder, the coach of the in-state rival Kansas State Wildcats, has long had a history of pilfering the juco ranks for talent. Apparently, after seeing the Wildcats success this year, Weis has taken notice.

Out of the 23 commitments the Jayhawks have, 15 are juco’s.

Of those juco prospects, Marquel Combs and Chris Martin are two of the most sought after prospects in all of recruiting.

Combs, the one-time Ole Miss Rebels commit, has nearly 50 scholarship offers, from schools of varying stature. The 6’3” 305lb defensive tackle blew up this year for Pierce Community College, and picked the Jayhawks earlier this month.

Martin was one of the most highly sought-after high school recruits in the country not too long ago. He was committed to Weis right before he was fired from Notre Dame, then switched to the Cal Golden Bears after he was let go. Before ever suiting up for Cal, he transferred to play for the Florida Gators. Before ever taking the field for the Gators, Martin transferred to Navarre College. Then this past year he switched to play for the City College of San Francisco. Yes, all of that actually happened. And needless to say, the 6’5” 260lb Martin is looking to settle down for the next two years. Kansas could be the perfect escape for the talented defensive end.

Combs, Martin and the rest of the junior college prospects being brought in are going to be asked to produce immediately.

Judging by their record, that should be readily apparent to those prospects. That reason alone should help the Jayhawks continue their recruiting hot streak.

Honestly I signed up to read inside scoop about if/when Pioli would be ousted, after the local radio and newsprint reported this is where the SOC movement started. It's been a helluva time to start reading this board given all the drama that's unfolded since. I don't know why I'm still following this team as intently as I am but I guess I'm a sucker for the franchise. I went all 8 games in 2008 when we went 2-14 and I don't recall seeing a win in those 8 games but I can't remember.

I've been a Chiefs fan since the day my dad took me to the final game of the season and this happened.

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...8712270kan.htm

I realized while watching the Oakland game on Sunday that there isn't one single, solitary thing I like about this team anymore. Not one player...not one coach...nothing that the organization does brings me an ounce of joy. Maybe this will change in the future but I'm not holding my breath. Sundays now are filled with watching real teams play in big games...Unfortunately Kansas City doesn't even seem like the NFL to me. It's some strange minor league where even when the Chiefs play a good team the play sucks for both squads.

It's truly sad.

I became a Chiefs fan obviously because I'm a native Kansas Citian. My grandfather had season tickets when they first moved up from Dallas, always loved pro football. My dad had season tickets for about 30 years until everybody started getting too rowdy the past 5-10 years and standing all game and always trying to give him high fives all game. Plus he didnt like all the rock music they play during the games (black betty annoyed him for some reason). I remember as a kid first starting to get into Chiefs football when the cops would show up at our grade school and pass out the Police football cards.

Anybody else remember getting these as a kid? I can't remember but it seems like they didn't have stats on the back, it was always a life lesson like: "Make sure you listen to your parents" Or GARY SPANI (on back: "Always report strangers peeking through your parents bathroom window when your mommy is taking a shower")

Hutch kicker, offensive lineman to walk on at KU

By Matt Tait

http://worldonline.media.clients.ell...6f48523261b548
Hutch CC place-kicker Michael Mesh, left, and offensive lineman Colby Hamel have announced they will walk on to Kansas' football team for the 2012 season.

They don’t have the buzz of the rest of the incoming recruiting class, but at least one could make an impact that is just as important.

Place kicker Michael Mesh and offensive lineman Colby Hamel, a pair of Hutchinson Community College football players, announced recently they would be walking-on to the Kansas University football team for the 2013 season.

Mesh’s addition seems to be the more intriguing of the two, though Hamel’s 6-foot-3, 305-pound frame at least makes him an interesting prospect.
During his two-year career at HCC, Mesh was a second-team NJCAA All-American and was a two-time first-team All-Jayhawk Conference selection. He is expected to compete with Nick Prolago and Ron Doherty for KU’s kicking duties right away and appears to be an upgrade on what Kansas had at the position throughout 2012.

Mesh, a Hutch native, made 12 of 15 field-goal attempts this season and tied a school record with a 47-yarder during a playoff loss at Butler. His 16 career makes are the most in HCC history, and his 186 career points are the most scored by a kicker in Blue Dragons history.

Mesh made a visit to KU on Dec. 7 and said he liked what he heard in his meeting with KU coach Charlie Weis.

“Coach Weis said I had a good chance to get the field-goal job, but I have to earn it,” Mesh told Brad Hallier of The Hutchinson News. “I’m going to get up there and just show them what I have and what I can do. Kansas is where I’ve wanted to play. I want to help them get back to being dominant in the Big 12.”

Hamel, a second-team All-Jayhawk Conference selection in 2012, can play center and guard and started every game but one this season.

Because they are walk-ons, neither player will count against KU’s cap in the Class of 2013, which currently sits at 24 players, 10 of whom signed letters of intent on Dec. 19.

Rivals 100 released
Rivals.com updated its list of the 100 best junior-college football prospects in the country Thursday, and KU, with seven, landed the most commitments of any program in the country.

Pierce Community College defensive tackle Marquel Combs, ranked No. 1 by ESPN, was Rivals’ top-ranked Jayhawk at No. 10, followed closely by City College of San Francisco defensive end Chris Martin, who was 13th. Others on the list: Iowa Western offensive lineman Mike Smithburg (41), Pierce C.C. linebacker Marcus Jenkins-Moore (57), Arizona Western cornerback Cassius Sendish (59), Fort Scott C.C. cornerback Kevin Short (69) and Hinds C.C. defensive end Andrew Bolton (91). All but Bolton made their commitments official by signing letters of intent Dec. 19. They, along with four other midyear transfers, will enroll in time for the spring semester. Bolton and several others from both the juco and prep ranks are expected to sign with Kansas on Feb. 6, the first day of the regular signing period.

McDougald an all-star
Former KU safety Bradley McDougald, a senior from Dublin, Ohio, on Wednesday announced via Twitter that he had accepted an invitation to the annual East-West Shrine Game, a college football all-star showcase that features some of the top talent from around the country and works to benefit Shriners hospitals.

This year’s game, the 88th edition, will kick off at 3 p.m., Jan. 19 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be televised by NFL Network.

Former Jayhawk Steven Johnson, now with the Denver Broncos, played in the 2012 Shrine Game.

Really? No players? Bowe, Charles, Houston, Hali, Flowers, Berry? None? :shake:

Everyone on that list there save Jamaal Charles over celebrates every single decent play they make. It's annoying when overall your team is so bad.

How they conducted themselves by attending Belcher's funeral and everything didn't help either.

Dustin Colquitt is alright I think. He's my favorite Chiefs player.

3* ILB Colton Goeas committed today. Runor has it that he and 4* OG Reeves Koehler are a package deal. This bodes well.

Definitely. I'm excited for next season. We already saw improvement on the field this year even though the record didn't show it. IMO, if the QB position is improved this team could make a bowl. And from everything I'm hearing, Heaps will be good.

KU athletic director presses case for Rock Chalk Park

Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger listens as new football coach Charlie Weis takes questions during a news conference on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at the Anderson Family Football Complex.

If all goes well during tonight’s vote by the Lawrence City Commission regarding land usage and zoning specifications — as is expected — the Kansas University athletic department could begin construction on what has come to be known as “Rock Chalk Park” within weeks.

Speaking publicly for the first time about the potential new complex that would be located in northwest Lawrence, KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger on Monday shared with the Journal-World the many reasons behind the university’s eagerness to begin construction on a $50 million project that will deliver a new home for KU’s soccer, softball and track and field programs.

Those reasons include everything from financial and competitive advantages to important aesthetic and long-range visions for the department. Most critical, however, is the benefit such a move figures to have on KU’s status within college athletics.

“Kansas Athletics, for over a decade, has been searching for a way to address the needs of track and field, soccer and softball,” Zenger said. “Without this opportunity, we would spend the next five to seven, and maybe 10 years, trying to raise $50 million to build these three structures, all the while putting the completion of the renovations to Allen Fieldhouse on hold and, even further, putting on hold the renovations to Memorial Stadium. In light of what we’ve witnessed with BCS-conference realignment over the past several years, that would be the most foolish action that we could ever take.”

Cost advantage
Perhaps the best part, at least through the eyes of the university, is that the $50 million project will cost just $39 million, thanks to the Bliss Sports Foundation, headed by Lawrence developer Thomas Fritzel, which has offered to take the project at a cost of $39 million spread over 30 years.
“We’ve had no one else approach us with that kind of offer,” said Zenger, who added that, as a parent and member of the Lawrence community, he would love nothing more than to see the city’s plans for a rec center at the same location become a part of this project. The two concepts, however, remain completely separate and will be governed by each party.
“They invited us to walk alongside their project about a year ago, so when we found land that fit our needs, we simply invited them to walk alongside us should they so choose,” Zenger said. “From where we sit, we believe that all of these facilities being in one location makes it a more vibrant entity and, more importantly for the city of Lawrence, a bigger economic engine.”

As far as the “Rock Chalk Park” aspect goes, KU Endowment will own the land, Bliss Sports will own the facilities and lease them to KU for 30 years, and, at the end of the contract, all three facilities will belong to KU. Zenger said such a setup is mutually beneficial and the $11 million savings would allow KU to turn its attention to men’s basketball and football, which are the financial lifeblood of most athletic departments across the country.
“As we continue to watch BCS realignment unfold, there is nothing more critical for our future in that equation than addressing the needs of Memorial Stadium,” said Zenger, who added that none of KU’s early blueprints regarding Memorial Stadium renovations included a track around the football field. “Let me make it really clear: This project, whatever we want to call it, allows us to open the door to address the needs of Allen Fieldhouse and Memorial Stadium immediately.”

There also exists the issue of Title IX compliance. Zenger said the mere start of such a project would put KU in good standing in that area, but emphasized that getting a gold star in the annual review of equality between men’s and women’s sports was not the motivation behind the project.

“These young women deserve competition facilities that are equal to their peers in the Big 12 Conference,” Zenger said. “And even if there were no such thing as Title IX they’d still deserve this.”

Would KU still be going forward with the project?

“Absolutely,” he added. “If we’re gonna have a sport and it’s worth having, it’s worth doing well.”

Staying on track
Although upgrades at both Allen Fieldhouse and Memorial Stadium offer tremendous revenue potential, Zenger was careful to point out that putting track, soccer and softball first was not simply a get-this-out-of-the-way-so-we-can-get-to-that scenario.

As it stands now, KU is not eligible to host any conference, regional or national track meets because the existing track at Memorial Stadium is not a true 400-meter track. If and when the new track is built, it will be a state-of-the-art IAAF track, of which there are only a handful in the country. Zenger said would return the luster to KU’s historic track programs.

“This will allow the Kansas Relays to become once again what they used to be,” Zenger said.

Moving forward with the current setup is the equivalent of the men’s basketball program playing its home games at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.

“So many people think that we need and want to get that track out of Memorial Stadium because of football,” Zenger said. “And they are absolutely correct; we need it out of there. But first and foremost we need it out of there for track and field. It’s been too long, and, when it comes to competition sites, this project is our greatest undertaking since the building of Allen Fieldhouse, preceded by the building of Memorial Stadium.”

Great video. Love Weis' honesty. Can't wait for spring...

I can only speak for myself, but with the Gregorian rollover, and the anticipation of a new year and new season, I would suggest one of the more respectable CP members to start the Official 2013 KU footbal thread.

If emphasize "more respectable". We all know who needs to bow out of the start. I'll take myself out on that.

4,700+ posts gonna be hard to beat but might as well try
