From Royals Insider @JoshVernier: #Royals Danny Duffy experiencing "tightness," so Yordano Ventura to start tomorrow vs. Cleveland. |

I wonder how many pitchers have made their major league debuts as starters for contending teams in the last two weeks of a pennant race?

EDIT: WHEW!

LHP Danny Duffy says he has some minor inflammation in his flexor. Not related to new ligament. I didn't say NOBODY had done it -- I'm sure some have -- but I couldn't tick off 10 names off the top of my head. ;) |

Worked out for the Rays, though... similar type of pitcher at that age, too. EDIT: Thinking about it... maybe Bob Feller? Johan Santana and Lincecum both jumped into races in the second half, but it was much earlier in the season. |

None of those other guys you mentioned were in a pennant race. A guy I thought of immediately was Bobby Sprowl of the Red Sox in 1978. He made 3 starts in September, although the first was Sept. 5, not with two weeks to go. That's pretty close, though. |

I think the Twins won the year Santana was converted to a starter full time, but he had big-league experience prior. Lincecum came up in 2007, when the Giants were 20 games under .500. I was thinking they were in contention at that point for some reason. Hard to find these guys. |
