That was the best game they've played all year. I wouldn't expect a win on Monday against a much better team on the road, but if they play anything like that again, they'll be there at the end.

A lot of Monday night might ride on the health of DeAndre Kane's ankle. He's been their best player so far, and if he's out, I like Kansas' chances.

Buehler445 01-11-2014 03:24 PM

I was really surprised at how well KU played overall. The way the game started, it looked to be a pretty tough game. This game was won with the 8 minutes or so with the second team in, where the second teamers built on the lead as KSU got tired an didn't have anybody to rotate. Those 4-5 guys put together some really really good minutes.

Pretty disappointed in the Embiid ejection. He played a great game, and ended it like that. Pretty shitty.

The other thing I'm surprised about is there wasn't much hacking, tackling, BS "physical" play that we've seen from them in the past. Maybe that was a Frank Martin thing and Weber won't bring that crap, but I was surprised to see how clean KSU played. Also, the officiating was the best I've seen in awhile. They didn't biff too many calls.

Looking forward to ISU. That will be a real test. Kane should be OK by Monday, it didn't look like much of a twist, unless I'm missing something. I'm sure ISU will fire all their guns Monday.

Didn't look to me like he twisted it that hard. Unless I'm missing something, he shouldn't miss a beat Monday.

I like our chances whether he plays or not. Our out of conference schedule has prepared us for games like this, and until ISU can find a way to knock us off I'm firmly going to believe we win that game.

Should be in Self's doghouse which usually means you sit out the next game.

Guess we will see.

I didn't think it looked that bad live either, but, then again he didn't even walk off the court. They had to carry him over to the bench.

Might be his first time. He wasn't wearing a brace and if it hasn't ever happened to you before you definitely think the world is ending.

He might be back for Monday but a bum wheel can not only affect your cutting and defense but also your jumper.

Do I refer to idiots often? It doesn't feel like it's that often. Certainly not "always."

I get annoyed when people post ridiculous evaluations and disparaging remarks that are neither well thought-out nor accurate nor realistic. And they do it just to be contrarian and negative. It's not trolling, really, it's just... I'm struggling for the word, honestly. I suppose I could say that they are trying to add value to themselves in an effort to counter their own deficiencies, by creating false ones for someone else, but that doesn't seem like very economical writing.

Idiots is just quicker.

If it isn't that, it will be something else. They're still making up ref excuses for EJ scoring 39 points on them last season.

Embiid aint gon' have time for that.

CoMoChief 01-11-2014 04:50 PM

This team is a lot better when they're making 3's. (duh)

Wiggins was getting hot there in 2nd half. Still think him and Selden need to attack the rim a little more rather than play around the perimeter. Wish Frankamp and Greene could get into the game a little more.

This team isn't yet defensively sound where Self needs them to be (even though today's game was a better effort on that note), so they're going to have to outscore other teams for the time being. In order to do that though they really need to get their 3 point shootin' studs into the game...they can be a liability on defense but their long shot is sorely needed.

Pablo 01-11-2014 04:52 PM

Damn, tie ball game in Morgantown.

Gonna be some tough sleddin' in the B12 this year. Still four minutes for Okie Light to pull away.

Big road win for OSU. It's going to be a tough race.

saphojunkie 01-11-2014 05:29 PM

Man I love Marcus Smart's game. But at the end of the day, if we can truly realize our potential, I'm not sure who can beat us.

But none of that matters. We have to go into ISU Monday and get a win. If we can take one in Ames, this team will SKYROCKET in the rankings.

Prison Bitch 01-11-2014 08:11 PM

Duke was #16 and lost again. Of course they'll stay in the rankings because they're Duke even though they have no great wins, but still: there's a chance they could fall out. UNC was thrashed by Syracuse and is now 0-3 in ACC play.

The last time they met when neither team was ranked in the AP or Coaches? 1955. Yeah. The year before Wilt came to KU!

I get why KSU and ISU alums root for their school, and sorta see why Mizzouchebags root for theirs despite a history of fail. But is there any good reason the unattached KC resident doesn't root for Kansas given we are the only legit threat to win a title in this region?

Probably because Perry Ellis and Wayne Selden are on the team.

I think ISU's sporadic chaotic offensive philosophy of throwing up 3s, good or bad looks, plays into our transition game offensively. If they hit them then it's another story but we can hang offensively. After Saturday, KU moved up to seventh nationally in offensive efficiency, per KenPom. Best KU offense since 2009-10 (2nd).

Haha that caught my attention as well. But it's going to be that way as long as Fred stays in Ames. We are pretty good this year, but next years team is more talented. And everyone but one returns the next year after that.

Iowa State will be in the Big12 championship mix every year going forward until Fred leaves for the NBA if that ever happens.

Obviously you like to troll. You're not a peer basketball program and haven't been the past 100 years and won't be the next 100 years. You've been to 3 sweet 16s....ever. You've won the conference 6 times....ever. (Our recent coach has won it 9 straight times). You are a dreadful 59-174 against us all time. Even your current coach is 1-6 against us.

I know you want to pretend you're a peer program. But I want to pretend I'm going to screw Kate Upton tonite. Pretending won't make it so.

Braincase 01-13-2014 07:59 AM

Iowa State fans have zero objectivity. They won't be happy unless 100% of the foul calls go there way, and then they'll still find a couple more to bitch about.

I'll never forget the time we lost to Baylor in 2001 and had to play in Ames the next game. A sign in their student section read "Baylor WTF?" as they beat us. A few weeks later ISU was the top seed in the Big 12 tourney and played Baylor first round.

I don't have to tell you what happened.

KU was down 87-82 with 35 seconds left in this game. Elijah Johnson then proceeded to hit 2 threes and 2 free throws within that time to send it to OT. He then made a layup, a 2 point jump shot, 2 more threes, and a final dunk in overtime to seal it. Yeah, sounds like it was all the refs.

KC_Connection 01-13-2014 10:16 AM

That game was also even bigger for KU in retrospect. Without it, the conference winning streak would have ended last season.

saphojunkie 01-13-2014 10:57 AM

DJay23 01-13-2014 11:43 AM

You know, I'm going from memory here so I could be wrong, but I seem to remember losing in Ames 2 years ago and KU fans were grumbling about some pretty bad officiating. I remember it was a big deal because Self was all over the officials during the game but after in a hallway under the arena an official was knocked over or knocked out or something and who other than Bill Self came to his aid.

So the point is, ISU fans acting like they get the short end of the stick EVERY time is just silly (as we already know).

RustShack 01-13-2014 11:44 AM

Interesting. We moved up 3 spots after beating OU and KSU. You slipped after beating Baylor and coming up short versus unranked OU.
