Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday is working hard at first base in Jupiter, Fla.

Holliday was said to be resistant to a move during the season. According to spies who have seen workouts over there, Holliday is doing it on his own to try to lengthen his career, but if he looks really good there, maybe they'd still consider free-agent OF Alex Gordon.

In any case, with the losses of Jason Heyward, Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos, there isn't much outfield depth in St. Louis. So they'll need to sign someone for the outfield, preferably someone who can play center field.

Holliday, 35, hit .279 last season with four home runs and 35 RBI. He was limited to just 73 games due to injury.

I hope they fully vet that move, I can just envision him doing an "ole" on one of Yadi's missles throwing behind the runner. He also struggles to judge anything hit in the air high enough that others converge as well. I am surprised he hasn't at some point in his career re-enacted the Jose Canseco ball off the melon in the outfield. The odds will probably go up with infield sky balls. If he wants to really prolong his career, seek out a team he can stomach to DH for and let us work out a deal. He would rake as a DH.

Sure why not? Not going to hurt anything to see if he will ve a disster at 1B. Play him some at 1B in spring training. See how bad he looks. Be nice if he could be a below average fielder and not a complete disaster.

Just says the Cards are in discussions with the Rays about pitching, not necessarily Odorizzi.

The Rays are trying to extend Odorizzi. More likely the discussions are about someone like Moore.

Morosi also included odorizzi in said tweet and it was documented that the dodgers and rays talked possibly about odorizzi

I'm sure their asking price is quite steep. And I don't really see a fit with the Cardinals, assuming Piscotty is off the table. The Rays want bats. They were talking with the Cubs about Baez and nothing came of it.

O.city 12-19-2015 10:55 AM

I'd imagine they'd have to sell them on one of the bats that's already with the big club, but I doubt it.

It's just not a fit. They need bats. We don't have valuable young bats to spare.

I don't know why the Cardinals wouldn't just sign someone like Doug Fister to a short contract and see if he bounces back. Then Lynn comes back next year.

I'd rather have Leake myself, but it doesn't seem like it's taking the prospects it was assumed it would to get guys, which I'm guessing depends on the contract of said player etc.

You'd have to have a comparable trade to see what it might cost

He said "valuable." Adams isnt going to bring back a young pitcher with 4 more years of control.

Leake apparently wants to remain on the west coast and what are you talking about with trades? Did you miss out on the Miller trade? Odorizzi isn't the caliber of prospect Miller is but the Diamondbacks gave up 2 top 100 propects (#10/#63?) and Ender Inciarte.

They wont let him go for cheap and if Grichuk or Piscotty isn't in the deal then I don't see what the Cards have to offer. But are they going to give up Grichuk and go with Pham in CF? He's sure to play maybe 80 games.

O.city 12-19-2015 11:52 AM

So odorizzi isn't the caliber of miller, but we should look at that trade in terms of prospects?
