Good question. I’m not sure if it’s technically a sitcom, but people often call it one.

a television series that involves a continuing cast of characters in a succession of comedic circumstances
I would say it qualifies based on the definition.

Yeah by definition that's correct but it still feels wrong classing a genius show like Community with formulaic shows ike 'Caroline in the City' or 2 Guys and a Girl and a Pizza Place.. or Seinfeld for that matter.

So Community and Seinfeld are in classes of their own, but Frasier is GOAT among the typical multicam sitcom genre.

A sitcom is a broader category, indicating that the format is comedy arising from the situation. It's not a designation of quality or an indication of formula.

As for 'formula' Community is every bit as 'formulaic' as any other, as it is a mixed group of traditional and non-traditional students at a Community College. That doesn't mean every episode is exactly the same, but it's more defined than, say something like Black Mirror or The Twilight Zone, where the entire tone, setting, and even cast changes from episode to episode.

What other sit com -or film or TV show for that matter- approached Community's use of meta storytelling?

Perhaps Scrubs at times?

It's Always Sunny?

Party Down was classic. I wish it lasted more than two seasons, they were supposed to bring it back but haven’t heard anything lately.

Gomer Pyle was a spinoff of the Andy Griffith Show.

NBC did not treat My Name is Earl with respect.

It needed to have its cliff hangers tied up. I watched all of them during Covid. It is a great show.
