Last place schedules don't mean diddly anymore. With the exception of two games, we play the exact same schedule as the first place team in our division. Since they play us twice and we are the #1 pick, their schedule is actually easier than ours based on last year's record.

Throw out all the games in common.

KC plays:
Denver 13-3
Denver 13-3
Buff 6-10
Cleve 5-11

Totals: 37-27

Denver plays:
KC 2-14
KC 2-14

Smith may not be more game manager than load shoulderer, but Cassel couldn't muster even game manager unless it was against the worst teams in the league. He made brain farts that seemed previously unfathomable. He made simple passes in that flat that were so off target that they stopped the receiver in his tracks and got him run over like Letterman's stalker on the train tracks, the pants pooping under pressure fertilized a small farm one county over, his audibles were so obvious the defense could make the stop with a cigarette draped from their lips.

If we get a minimal return Smith and he's merely competent and cautious, it'll still be a huge upgrade.

Smith is certainly an upgrade from Castile, I agree. I think that people see the parallels in circumstances (2nd round picks traded for backup qbs, cornering us into an unexciting 1st round draft pick) and assume parallel results. And aside from that, Smith probably won't lead us to the holy land, so to that very arbitrary degree, he is the same as Khastel.

Expectations should be higher than what they’ve been in the past. I mean, it’s only right, We’ve done a lot of work to retain very good players in the Derrick Johnsons, the Tamba Halis, the Jamaal Charles and some other players, but we’ve also added some other good players. I feel we have a really good coaching staff intact, so expectations should be high.

I would bet my life savings that Alex Smith's quarterback rating last season is higher than the highest rookie QBR this season.

2012 - Started season, concussion in week 10 (record of 8-2), Kap replaces him and starts all the way to the Super Bowl

So...you guys could draft Geno. Alex Smith will play well, get injured half way through the 2014 season, Geno will replace him and be your new franchise QB.
