Nolan Ryan as an Astro or Pujols early in his career. I saw Bonds play earlier in his career in Candlestick but he sat the day I should have seen him is full roid prime.

He is tied with Honus Wagner with the most batting titles in the NL with 8.

Ty Cobb had 12.

I hadn't noticed this before until looking up Gwynn. Advanced stats are not at all kind to his defense and don't rate his offense as I would have expected.

I've been on a Brooks Robinson kick lately.

Dumbest ****ing post ever. Top 5 defensive player at any position ever according to advanced metrics and common sense. Top 10 SS of all-time in WAR.

For me it's Pujols and its not close.

Really? I guess that's not super surprising. He certainly wasn't out there for his D, and he didn't hit for much power, and didn't walk a lot either. He just hit like a machine.

Gwynn had a 7.0 WAR season in 1987 hitting 7 HRs. That's pretty amazing. It's also amazing to think of a guy like Tony Gwynn swiping 56 bags.

Hitter - Frank Thomas

Fielder - Ozzie Smith

Overall player - cal ripken

Gwynn was slimmer in the 80's than how he's generally remembered. Probably didn't hurt that was the golden age of steals. There are a few forgotten ones mixed in there. Like I mentioned, Eric Davis... he has a year where he hit 25-30 HRs and stole 80 bases. Just incredible numbers.

Ryne Sandberg had a 50+ steal season somewhere in there too. That's another one people probably wouldn't guess.

Gwynn was a real cool guy too. I got his autograph at Wrigley and he was super nice.

I did get the chance to see Eric Davis too much to the dismay of my stepmother. Bad game for him, but was fun.
