But lets not act like this doesn't make it substantially more difficult. Last year Smith was a fringe pro-bowl caliber player and his length perfectly matches up with what Thomas can do. It isn't just about 'B+' players, it's a B+ player that also presents a difficult matchup for Denver's top receiving threat.

It's the old boxing axiom - matchups make fights. Hell, let's say you replace Smith with another B+ player - he's still not going to be as good in that game because he doesn't present the length problems that Smith does.

If the Broncos lost Thomas, we'd see that as a pretty damaging loss for them and assume our odds of success just increased quite a bit, no? Well by losing Smith and a very strong matchup against Thomas, we've essentially done the inverse by increasing Thomas's effectiveness and thus decreased our odds of success quite a bit.

I disagree, There's no assurance the CB we use will do better or worse, same with Thomas for the Broncos. Another player may make the same or even better plays in his place. The odds are that the replacement wouldn't but to use this to say the Chiefs lose is asinine.

Depends on how the year plays out. We should have around 30m in space and a bunch of guys to sign or replace, so it depends on who earns extensions.

My guess is Howard and Abdullah get new contracts.

Nah i bet he gets re-signed.

I doubt it.

His replacement is already on roster and he's got no leverage.

We'll let him walk and get a 5th round comp pick...

Of course it isn't. A 6'2" veteran CB coming off a top 8 season is going to be replaced by a "sophomore", a rookie, or a guy that was cut from a practice squad prior to last season.

Essentially, we're taking a big hit at the second most important position on our defense while playing against a sure-fire HOF QB, probably the most intelligent QB of all time, and a team whose strength will directly exploit our newfound weakness.

Smith was a top CB in the NFL last season, and can be again this season with the added front 7 help. You need top CB's in today's NFL. And this team now has one. Berry is coming back hopefully soon, which will boost this defense even more.

I want a dominating Chiefs defense. It needs to be the best defense in the league because Alex Smith won't win this team shit unless it is the best. The defense has tons of talent on it, there's no reason not to invest in the defense more and not have to worry about the secondary for years. Is a DWI all you're scared of?

Can you imagine eventually having Smith, Peters, Gaines covering xyz, Parker as a single high safety, Berry down in the box covering TE's and underneath routes along w/ DJ, and Houston, Ford, Catapano, Bailey, and Poe all unleashing hell on the QB. WTF is going to be able to pass on us?

The D we had last year was plenty good enough to win with. We need a more consistent offense.

ThaVirus 07-24-2015 10:50 AM

We've still got a solid 2 months before the regular season.

If any of our other CBs get dinged up and Marcus Cooper sees any real amount of game time action against Denver, we're ****ed.

Um...so **** talent, then? That's the approach you're going to take here?

I didn't say the Chiefs will lose - I said this will make it harder. If it's your position that anybody could go in there and outperform how Smith may have performed that day or that if Thomas went down the Bronco's #3 wideout may play the day of his life, then you're essentially saying any single game is random.

If that's the case, well shit, why bother talking football at all? Evidently it's just one big goddamn coin flip.

You're essentially downplaying the point of any pre-game discussion. If that's the case, then you've picked an odd place to spend time.

If he plays well, he'll cost as much as Albert did and we'll approach a 3rd, IMO.

Howard will probably cost 5m. Abdullah turns 30 on July 27 and will probably get a new short term deal, but not for big money.

Stephenson and Allen can earn new deals, but I doubt for significant money.

Eric Berry? DJ?

I don't really see a reason to let SS walk unless lots of guys play the best ball of their lives and earn massive deals.

You should have used a ? there.

And for the record it wouldn't be the first time under Dorsey.

After this year it doesn't ****ing matter. There isn't a QB in the league as good at getting the ball out of his hands as quickly as Manning.

Our secondary is young and talented. Odds are Manning exploits that.

I still think this team gets 10 wins and makes the playoffs.

I'd LOVE to get Denver round 1. Manning's arm will be ragged out and our secondary will have some serious PT by that point...

Hammock Parties 07-24-2015 10:58 AM

So we have to face Manning AND Rodgers with a rookie and Gaines starting.

Yep. 0-3.

WE're playing Ryan Mallet week 1. I doubt we lose to him.

It's possible.

IMO we've inflated Smith's value with our mad-good pass rush and he might rank top 10 next year.

If so I'm in complete agreement with letting him walk....

Bullshit 2-1 at worst.

Per Ian Rapoport

Usual suspension for a DUI is 2 games, unless there are extenuating circumstances. #Chief CB Sean Smith hit a street lamp. Led to extra game
