Blue Jays lost tonight when our good friend Jose Bautista was called out for the new Chase Utley slide rule... illegal slide. Didn't try to stay on second base, tried to grab the infielders leg. Kept two runs from scoring. This is going to be the topic of the day for sure.

By the book, it's the right call. Will they enforce it as strictly in every case of this (or something similar to this) throughout the year, though? I very much doubt it, but there are going to be a ton of shitstorms if they do.

I have a huge problem with the Markakis slide being ruled illegal and I would have a problem with this one as well if he didn't blatantly grab his leg.

The rule is just shit

Gibbons says they will come out wearing dresses tomorrow.

jd1020 04-05-2016 10:13 PM

I just don't understand why it's important to make sure you attempt to stay on the base. The runner is out. Who gives a **** if he remains on the bag at that point? The problem with the Utley "slide" was that he was beyond the bag and made contact with the defender before even hitting the dirt.

If you are going to go to such stupid lengths to destroy a part of the game since it's existence then get rid of the neighborhood bullshit.

I don't think it's the slide, per say. It's more about highlighting the fact that he took the inside tract to be in position to interfere with the play.

Busch League move by Bautista. Big surprise.

It's 100% about the slide. What was wrong with Markakis' slide other than the fact he didn't remain on the base after being called out?

You should probably learn how to spell the phrase if you are going to use it. And no, it wasn't.

Yep, it's the slide. It's the fact that, according to the umpires, Bautista intentionally initiated the contact with the fielder, which made it not a "bona fide slide" under 6.01 (j).

Quote:

Notwithstanding the above, a slide shall not be a “bona fide slide”
if a runner engages in a “roll block,” or intentionally initiates (or
attempts to initiate) contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking
his leg above the fielder’s knee or throwing his arm or his upper
body.

Expect managers to come out and argue for a replay of any takeout slide this year. This is going to get old real fast (especially if they continue to enforce the rule as strictly as they did here).

Grabbing his leg is indeed bush leeg.

Yes, I'm sure the Rays will take offense to the touching of his foot along the dirt during a slide.

Guess we can expect a beanball tomorrow. LMAO

mnchiefsguy 04-06-2016 02:08 AM

He slide to the inside of the base....the same side of the base the infielder is on. He did it on purpose. He intentionally reached out and attempted to grab the infielder and pull him off of his feet.

No brainer call there. Bautista violated the spirit and the letter of the rule.
