From what I could tell she seemed to be a dark horse to maybe get a medal so it wasn't from completely out of nowhere, but everyone expected China to win gold.

The Chinese girl in 2nd place had a very high score that usually would have won, but the American shot an olympic record score.

edit: oh, she's ranked 23rd in the world, so I guess this was a major upset.
