I'm amazed every single year at the number of people around here who think this team is going to draft a first round QB.
The Browns did not need to jump past us to get Manziel. The Eagles got a pick for trading back, but I think we took the guy they thought they could get after they dropped back. |

The potential upside of the pick is big. |
I'll be interested to see if they move up into the 2nd round today. There's still a TON of talented WRs on the board.

2. This place would explode with joy. A 2nd for Hali would be raping the Falcons. |

trading vets with big contracts is smart business, generally, as the pats have shown
i like hali and flowers, but the truth is that we have gotten their best years already if we could get a 2nd for either in this draft, do it... |
This makes me feel a bit better.

Would be silly to trade Tamba now if we are legit about having another playoff run. If we trade him we have Houston and a bunch of question marks. I would be happy to trade flowers for a 2nd however. I think we can compensate for him if we have better safety play which we should.

Here's his Pro Day.

Oh yeah, and Marquis Lee.

I remember Senior Bowl reports of Ford running and moving with the fluidity of a linebacker.

This isn't a Junior Siavii or Jon Baldwin type reach. I think Ford can turn into another Justin Houston and I'd be fine with that.
Ford will shine under Wade Phillips after Sutton's ass gets canned next year :D |
It would be a wonderful thing to be one of those teams with 11 or 12 picks in this years draft...
I think Lee, Garoppolo and Carr will be gone with 3 of the first 4 picks today |
the talent in the 2nd round this year is bonkers

Too bad you guys couldn't have waited a year to suck really bad |
I went into this draft with zero expectations for them taking a QB. They didn't give up two valuable picks to drop Smith after two seasons. I know the rumor of the contact dispute but I think they'll work something out. Smith has the Chiefs over a barrel but he also has to know other teams aren't going to break the bank for a 31 year old QB. He's a solid QB but he isn't Manning. There may also be a perception that his success is partly from being in an Andy Reid system and not something that can be replicated elsewhere (look at how most Reid QBs fared after they left the Eagles).
Personally, I think Cleveland leapfrogging KC only robbed the Chiefs of a chance to trade down. I don't think they were going to take Manziel or any other QB at that spot. I thought a pass rushing OLB was a big need on the team based on how Houston and Hali wore down last season, so I like the Ford pick. I've said before that with the QB we have, I think a quality TE would be more beneficial that another WR so passing on Lee didn't bother me that much. I just don't know if any of the good TEs will still be there in the 3rd, though there should still be some really WRs. |

Not sure why everyone is bitching about getting the best pass rusher in the draft? My have forgot what little pressure we put on QB's after game 6 of last year. I think Ford was always the pick they wanted.
This kid is humble and has a great attitude-Love the pick!! Poe, Ford, Hali and Houston-pick you poison-you can't double them all. |
Best pass rusher? Seriously?
|
The pick was not bad its just not expected. After watching Manning, Rivers and Luck eat dinner after the game in their clean uniform I understand the pick. This kid is fast and can get to the QB. It just sucks not to have a truly fast bad ass at wr.

Dee Ford will wear #90.

New #Chiefs OLB Dee Ford will wear No. 90. Bringing back Neil Smith's old number to the pass rush. |

WR board at this point:
1. Robinson 2. Latimer 3. Matthews 4. Lee 5. Landry 6. Montcrief 7. Adams 8. Bryant at least a couple of these guys will fall to the late 2nd early 3rd...might not need to move much to get a guy that will make an impact. |
As painful as it will be to watch the 2nd round (which I won't), I think enough talent will drop to the 3rd that we can either find great value at 87 or move up in the 3rd at a much lower cost.
|
We're going to go offensive linemen in the 3rd.
|
After watching the tape I'll say he isn't the all-around player Justin Houston is, but he may be that kind of rusher. And perhaps he will develop like Houston has in the pro game. Never enough rushers. Need WR, DB, OL the rest of the way.

When the Eagles traded back from 22 to 26 last night they targeted Dee Ford a pass rusher from Auburn, but Andy Reid & KC took Ford at 23 |

This explains Dennard.
@TerezPaylor: One thing I'll file away for future evals: Dennard seemed like perfect press-man corner. BUT is 5-11 with short arms. Chiefs passed. Agree that Ford was better pick. Pass rush always comes first. |

I remember when other teams were soooo totally going to draft Kawika Mitchell and Kris Wilson. We had to take them right then and there so we didn't miss out on them. Therefore, they weren't reaches at all

Ford on pass-rush moves: “This is the home of Derrick Thomas. I know you remember that speed. That get off is so deadly…” (1/2) Ford, con’t: "I love the speed rush. I love the spin. Pass rush is an art form." Ford on his goals: "Of course I want to be a Hall of Famer. But my short-term goal is I want to be a teammate.” Won't get ahead of himself. Ford: “I watched Lawrence Taylor. I watched Derrick Thomas.” Also mentioned Ray Lewis and Glenn Dorsey |
If you're not going to draft a quarterback, I think this is a pretty good pick.
