Something wasn't mentally right after his last injury. I know it is absolute total speculation based on no evidence whatsoever but I always wondered if anything with painkillers messed him up. Have to think he was on a ton of it towards the end. Him looking totally unmotivated on the field is just totally out of his element. Him not even trying to get a new contract even after his heel has had time to recover is odd. It seems like a mental thing and just have to hope the dude is OK.

Chiefspants 11-29-2021 08:32 AM

Yeah -- Berry's last year was rough, and he played hardball with known ****head John Dorsey in contract negotiations. But arguing that he set out to steal money from Kansas City is such a stupid take. He was a generational talent who worked his way back from brutal rehabs through significant injuries. He played one of the greatest defensive games I can remember when he erased prime Gronk in the first game of 2017. He singlehandedly won us two games in 2016 and had a singular impact on games that KC had not seen from a defensive player since Derrick freakin' Thomas. He also kept us in the Steelers game and had Alex Smith decided to throw to a wide open Tyreek Hill - would have been a big reason we won. EB was an incredible talent -- and gave his all to KC.

I don't think a lot of folks truly appreciate the physical toll cancer has on someone's body in both the short and long term. EB worked his butt off rehabbing that last injury, but his body just didn't have it anymore.

Wishing him ill - after all he went through - after all he did for KC in his prime and his season after coming back from cancer - and simply because his last contract ended up taking up some of Clark Hunt's money (and didn't even prevent us from winning the Lombardi), is embarrassing.

He's only auctioning off 3 cars in his collection, that hardly screams someone who's broke and needs to sell.

Gravedigger 11-29-2021 08:50 AM

Maybe his spirit spent all that money?

lcarus 11-29-2021 09:33 AM

I wonder why his playing career didn't continue. I figured some team in need of a safety would kick the tires a few years ago. Even now, he's only 32 years old.

ghak99 11-29-2021 10:30 AM

I hope he's not headed to the poor house, but at least we already know what he'll look like when he gets there so people can still ask him for his autograph.

ToxSocks 11-29-2021 10:54 AM

His body broke down at the end. That's what chemo does. His heart was there but the body couldn't go. When we finally saw him take the field it was evident that the burst he once had was gone. His game aged seemingly 5-6 years. The fact that he couldn't get a 2nd contract was evident that teams knew more about his medicals than we the public did.

This forum mostly shit on a man because his chemo-****ed body wouldn't let him come out and entertain us. We laughed and called him a hobo because he found a new appreciation for hair. Cancer does that to people. THAT left a sour taste in my mouth more so than anything Berry did or didn't do.

Selling off excess vehicles is more likely a smart financial move than a desperate one.

Yep. I once did that and bought a rental property. It was just easy for me that way without interrupting cash flow or dipping into cash on hand. Just sold one investment for another.

I figured the common assumption was that he didn't want to get surgery to fix the haglunds because it has a high risk of tearing his other Achilles.

This

cars are expensive, especially fancy ass cars

The property tax on cars is some bullshit and adds up quick

Eric Berry was a great player in his time, cancer cut his career short.

His life, his choice and it was The Clarks money anyway...

All true and I have fond memories of prime Eric Berry erasing prime Gronk from games.

But don't kid yourself about the money. It's still the team's salary cap and it negatively affected what the team was able to accomplish and plenty of fans were painfullly aware of that.

HS didn’t seem to give a shit what anybody thought. What else would explain when he said, “he was healthy enough to play but his spirit wasn’t in it.”
That was a glimpse of what was going on behind the curtain. All week he would tell the staff he would be ready to go game time and then every week 2 hours before the game starts he would tell them he couldn’t go. He milked the shit out of the situation. Every team in the NFL saw it and knew it. Ain’t nobody got time for all that. Hope he gets a good price for his camero. Wonder what him, cornbread and tumbleweed will be cruising in now?

Hammock Parties 11-29-2021 06:50 PM

The really sad thing is he couldn't get halfway healthy to last one more year and get a ring.

Would have been a great story.

Blaming a player for a bad contract is peak true fan.

Yeah, hell of a shame :shake:
He just dried up there at the end - sad actually. Expensive loss for the Chiefs BUT, that is the past.

I'm afraid Dan Sorensen caught the Eric Berry Spirit variant

EB got raped repeatedly by Gronk because his heart wasn’t in football is my takeaway from this piece.

I would imagine that anyone who plays in the NFL is on a ton of painkillers

Interesting that the KC Star decided to interview Berry shortly after we began discussing him in this thread.....those ****s are over here lurking for content.

I think we have an anti-racism policy on chiefsplanet. Are they allowed to be here?

ToxSocks 12-02-2021 01:29 PM

Just read the star article. According to them he had an Achilles tear in 2018.

Cheater5 12-02-2021 01:50 PM

I found the Star article to be somewhat poorly written and disjointed.

3 years later and he's still ****ing day-to-day. LOL

lcarus 12-02-2021 01:59 PM

Berry and Mathieu both in their prime together would be a hell of a safety duo. That's ok Thornhill is turning out to be pretty solid.

Zap Rowsdower 12-02-2021 01:59 PM

I wish Berry all the best. Hell of a player in his prime.

Yea, just forget the fact that he demanded a huge new contract with no intentions of every playing again. He ripped the team off, big time.

Chiefs have fourth-most dead cap for 2020 because of Eric Berry's contract

Before Stevie Johnson sucker blocked him, he was one of the best Chiefs safeties ever. After he got over the Cancer, he had one good season. Yeah, he did a Mike Sweeney and basically shoplifted his last contract, but before he got hurt he was a monster.

That was a horrible game. Our guys were dropping like flies.

Very dark time.

To this day (and admittedly, I don’t know what was in Stevie Johnson’s mind and heart) that was the cheapest shot I’d seen since Dale Carter whacked the Donx Tyrone Braxton.

LMAO Come on, bruv. He went on to play his best ball well after that ACL tear.

Man was 1st team All-Pro in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

We totally would have gone to a Super Bowl without having that dead money to contend with…

Oh wait - it literally didn’t matter at all. Who cares.

$19.5 million per game not a bad gig if you can get it. Chiefs medical staff could find shit wrong with him, but his medical always seemed to be able to find a hangnail, butthurt, of feels bad.
