I'm not paying $150 million for Greinke...especially being the head case that he is.

Year Age Team W L ERA
2004 21 Royals 8 11 3.97
2005 22 Royals 5 17 5.8
2006 23 Royals 1 0 4.26
2007 24 Royals 7 7 3.69

Okay, Duncan. Start us off with the 2013 thread.

This angle isn't getting enough play.

That said, DM is still dumb as ****.

And as I said before, if Dayton made this move based on some kind of handshake deal with Glass that Glass would spend more money if Moore would field a "more competitive" team, not only does the trade make sense for the here and now but it's also protecting the future.

Trading away Myers hurts, but if trading Myers means somehow that the overall spending budget goes up in future years, it's absolutely worth it.

We've done the $40M budget thing. Myers really isn't all that different than Moose, Gordon, or Hos. We've been down this route, now we're trying something different.

This is the Royals equivalent of the Chiefs drafting a 1st round QB.

Oh for sure but he hasn't signed anywhere yet so we really don't know.

Regardless my biggest frustration is overpaying.

Hellickson, Moore, or Price would have been better.

Two of the three most valuable guys in baseball. A Cy Young winner under control for 3 more seasons and a young, future Cy winner controlled for the rest of the decade. Yeah, those would have been better. And likely required more back in return (Gordon, or Butler, or Hosmer, or Moustakas)

Hellickson would have been worse. He's controlled longer but isn't as good a pitcher.

I'm going to pretend DM will come to his senses on that until proven otherwise (as I'm sure it will).

So duncan you have said numerous times that DM has to improve the starting pitching this offseason and that you were basically giving him one last chance. How have the moves satisfied or not satified you?

Greinke is also better with a bat in his hands than Frenchy.

Have we scheduled Shields' Tommy John surgery, yet?

What should I know about Greinke?

I fear that if someone charged Greinke's mound, Zack would beat them do death with the umpire's mask.

but for the love of God last year we went on a huge losing streak to start the year...and then we evened out...and did it with Hosmer being terrible, Frenchy being god awful...no Cain or Perez for an extended period of time and simply ATROCIOUS starting pitching.

The fact of the matter is, regardless of how shitty we feel about losing Myers (and the dude was gonna be my favorite player)...we did gain a top tier starter and another guy with major league stuff...we're also *knock on wood* going into the season with Cain and Perez AND perhaps maybe Hosmer can go back to being the player he was his rookie year? Our guys are still so young we have no idea if they can take some big steps as well...and we have two holes in our lineup...so does just about every other team in baseball, if not more.

So really...did we lose the deal? Maybe. Probably.

But are we a hell of a lot better now compared to last year? Oh, yes. For sure.

Would we have been better with Myers over Frenchy! I'm sure we would be as well...

but when it comes down to it, pitching wins. Every single time.

I agree that pitching wins, but it does bring up an interesting question; how did Tampa ever lose? Their rotation was stacked.

AL East, probably.

From Dutton's Star chat:

"And think what you want, there is interest out there in Hochevar. Maybe not at his $4.4 million salary, unless a deal brings a corresponding salary back. Maybe that's how they get another outfielder."
